NIBROC- Our county fair

NIBROC (that's Corbin spelled backwards by the way), is our county fair. Corbin isn't a county seat of any three of the adjoining counties, so, we really have no county fair as the others do. So, we had to come up with some kind of event that would equal their county fairs. We didn't do the farm events, or the other home-spun type of events that county fairs have, but, we put on a festival. We bring in a carnival ride company for the kids, shut down main street, and have food and other items all over the place.

It happens in August, the dates vary, of each year.

How did it come to be called NIBROC? There are dozens of stories, maybe someone here will post theirs, and I'll post mine.

The story of NIBROC as I heard it was,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Years ago, at the downtown city barber shop, the mayor, commissioners, and some other local folks were discussing what to call our festival.  It couldn't be a county fair, as we aren't the county seat. Many typical names were tossed about with no luck.

As the conversations wanned down, the mayor was reportedly sitting in the barber chair, receiving his haircut, and looking out the window. He noticed in the reflection of the window, a poster that had been hung on the wall behind him. Right then, someone came in the door, and as it opened, the reflection somehow turned the poster backward, so all the words were reversed for a moment as the door opened. He noticed it the first time, but didn't say anything. He wasn't sure what he had seen.

As the talk went on about the festival's name, another patron came in the shop, and then several more within just a few mintutes.  The barber had spun him around a few times since the first one, and then he noticed the reflection of the poster in the open door again.  NIBROC !!!!  As the door closed, he looked again, and the poster read "CORBIN".

He turned around, looked at the group of people, and said the word, NIBROC,,,,,,Corbin spelled backwards.........................

The group loved it, the word spread, and that's the story.

I'm sure this is just a tale,, but, it's the one my grandfather told me for years before he died in the 1970's.   I have no reason to doubt him.

I'm sure there's more stories out there.           ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!

Be sure and check out the thread on NIBROC in the Corbin Events section of this board.

Ignore the politics and whining. It's a good thread.
