Main Street

What about the new Main Street project that the City has going on. I hope it will bring downtown back to life. I sure hope to see some new shops on mainstreet. Maybe some sidewalk cafe's. It would be great to have some tables in Nibroc park and a fountain. How about public art projects in downtown. What do you all think?

Sharea (Moore) Myers grew up in Corbin, and worked 11 years for the City of Lexington. She will do a fine job.
We need to give her support and cooperation. The Downtown business owners who have met her are very enthused and impressed.

I am very interested to see how this program works.

I agree with the last post, the 100 seat thing has to go, along with no sunday sales. We'd need a new election though, as this was on the ballot about the 100 seat thing.

The city could regulate the type, size and other issues of smaller pubs or diners that would serve alcohol with food. No bars, as I think of them anyway.

Ms. Myers will do well with this project. I hope she gets the support she needs from the business owners and property owners.

Its great to see that Mrs. Sherea (Moore) Myers has been moved to City Hall and that she will no longer report to the "Executive" Economic Development Director. It would be great to see the Economic Development Director also report to the Mayor/City Manager instead of the Chairperson of the Industrial Commission.

Have they listed what her salary is going to be. Is it paid by a government agency, or the city, or from the economic dev. board.

Doesn't London have this program also. Is it operational, or in the planning stages.

The salary is paid by the City of Corbin. It is a matter of public record. The City signs an agreement to fund the program to allow time for orginazation and training. To me this says that the city is committed to offer the necessary support to down town businesses. It is a process that will take time. The London program has been in place for some time. They were able to move through the process more quickly, because when they first started they hired a already certified main street manager; that allowed them to be in a position to apply for some funding. I know this because I know the Downtown Manager there.

I think the City will benefit greatly from the program, it will take patience and support. Everybody has to be behind the projects. Best of Luck.

I hope this program is successful, and I believe Mrs. Sharea Myers is doing a good job getting it started. Many small towns across America are trying to retain their heritage and character in the way they maintain their downtown area.

Corbin is an unusual community. Surrounded by three counties and with no County Government in Corbin, it has to fend for itself. It has done a good job surviving and hanging tough through some difficult times. It is good to see people speaking up on this forum. In some areas people don't care and don't stay in tune with what is going on. Corbin is awake and I believe some good times are ahead.

Sharea Myers and her committees are working hard on the Downtown Revitalization program. The plan to have miniture railroad cars in different places downtown is a very good idea.

I hope our Tourism Commission supports this effort and that our City Commission does not try to micromanage these people who are working hard to improve downtown Corbin. This is not an easy job. I am glad they are giving a great effort. Some members of the City Commission seem to be against everything that they didn't personnaly think of themselves.

The News Journal has decided the Publisher wants to tell people what we should read or not read. Wow! I bet this website will pick up even more viewers after the people of this area read today's Editorial.  This is America, the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave!  This isn't China, or Iraq, or Iran.  Newspaper professionals usually stand up for freedom of the press.

I hope the Tourism Commission Starts supporting the Downtown improvement program.  Thank goodness Suzie Rasmus, Missy Shelton, and Steve McBurney are on the Commission.

The last poster makes an excellent point!!! It seems to be OK to call Mrs. Swindler an outsider but when it comes to the Tourism Chairman it is not OK?? He seems to whine on the one hand but yet call others the same names and invoke the same standards.

Letters to the News Journal Editor was OK as long as they attacked certain county officials dis-liked by the Editor, a double standard?

Debating issues and clearly exposing details of where people live, what they do, their business interests is all part of being in the Public arena. It's amazing none of the papers picked up Bob Terrells three phases of what it will take to expand the city and move us in the right direction, posted on this very site!

Very good data and excellent thought from a someone who you could clearly understand and see what direction he had recomended, some of the points I disagree with but it was a very good detailed account of a Direction & Plan!!!

Those are some of the GREAT ideas floating around on this site but yet the news journal never touched those postings??????????????????

What is done today is all Public as the Internet Blogs and quick information will only get faster and better, the old days of only a few opinions in the Local newspapers has long passed, be ready to defend and factualize your position in todays world!!!!

The publisher of the News Journal can dish it out, but he can't take it. He has rabbit ears, and a thin skin. I bet he has never looked at this website except for some of the selected forum comments. Has he seen how this website provides free service for the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life?  Has he seen how this website provides the fine arts schedule?  Has he seen the excellent Tourism Section?  Or Public Schools? Or Hospital? Or Main Street information? Or the Cruise in events?  Has he ever really read the section on Economic Development? He should because he doesn't have the foggiest idea about what it takes to bring Economic Development growth to our community. But he is an expert on everything, and the rest of us are a bunch of dummies, in his opinion.

Keep up your good work.  When they tried to "Ban a Book in Boston" years ago it became a best seller.

The Downtown program Thursday night was excellent.  And it was great to see Mayor McBurney and Commissioner Lynch at the event giving their support and encouragement to this community event.

Thanks to Sharea and members of the committee who have worked hard for Corbin on this program.  The entertainers were outstanding. All three segments would be great for NIBROC.

There are a lot people working hard to help us improve our Downtown area. Its too bad two of our city commissioners and four of our Tourism Board Members know very little about what other communities are doing to revitalize their downtown areas. This is happening across our nation, and we need to support Sharea's leadership as she and many of our citizens work hard  to improve Corbin.

Sharea's and our Downtown Committees deserve support from the Tourism, City Commission, and other groups in our community. There are a few people who don't want this project to succeed.

The tourism chairman and one of the other members that used to be a commissioner needs to get on board with the downtown program, or, GET OFF THE BOARD OF TOURISM!!!!!

They can sure criticize, but they can't come up with anything to help.

They're part of the problem, not the solution.

I agree. Considering the lack of support from our leaders, the Downtown Committees are doing a fine job. They put in many hours on our behalf. If there is any issue at all that comes up there are some who are ready to throw them to the wolves.  Corbin is a fine area. It is far from perfect. It can be much better. In order to get much better you must be strong enough to recognize your weaknesses and not sweep them under a rug as if they will just go away.
Surely we are tough minded enough to look our problems right in the face and determine to address them.
