TODAY THE TIMES REPORTED THE CITY WILL BE OUT $12000.00 TO FIND OUT IF THEY ARE A VOID UNDER THE BUILDING SITE THAT THEY KNEW WAS THERE TO BEGIN WITH.ALSO MGR CANNON REPORTED THE CITY WILL HAVE TO FUND UP TO 2.5 MILLION TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT THAT HAS NOT EVEN BEGUN.ARE WE IN OVER OUR HEAD ALREADY WITH THIS VENTURE?
Many people have said there were coal mine shafts and space inside that mountain. It seems strange that they are just doing that test now. Mayor McBurney should be commended for taking prompt action to be sure if this project can go forward and at what cost. Just before Mayor Miller left office he announced he had saved $1.5 Million in excavating costs by some stroke of genius. Now it looks as if it will cost much more than they anticipated.
Just before Mayor Miller left office he made a last minute announcement that CSX was being annexed into the City of Corbin. It is said that the State Transportation Secretary and new Judge Executive of Whitley have convinced the CSX against being annexed. I wonder what they promised CSX?
The former Mayor's last minute announcements have proven to be deceptive.
The CSX is a fine company. During the years the L & N and now the CSX have been in the Corbin area they have gotten much more from Corbin than they have from Whitley County. Whose Fire Department is just across the track from them? Whose Police Department is nearby? Where do they get their water and electricity? For years they have had the power and leverage with the jobs they offer people in this area and the City of Corbin has meekly watched this from the sidelines. Don't make the big dog angry.
The Railroad has been good for our area. Corbin has been good for the railroad. The courthouse in Whitley County is nearly 20 miles away and the farther you get away from the Courthouse the less you get in service and support.
If Corbin had CSX in the Corbin City limits it would benefit CSX much more than for them to be in the county. Which Government in our area is in debt $18 Million dollars for waste and mismanagement? Whitley County. The CSX is surrounded with parts of the City of Corbin. It runs parallel to Corbin's Main Street. Is the CSX ashamed of Corbin? Does it care about the Corbin City Schools that serve the young people close to them? I think it is ridiculous for a company to be right in the middle of your town and not be in the city limits.
Think you just may have sumed up a very good point or two, all the things you have just listed as services the Railroad already has, what is their incentive to come in?
Maybe we have given away a little too much in the past?
25 % of the occupational tax collected in Corbin goes to Whitley County, the most mis-managed county in Kentucky along with Knox County. Whitley county does virtually nothing for Corbin. When they negotiate the occupational tax allocation in a couple of years Corbin should not give Whitley County a penny.
WHITLEY COUNTY WILL DISCONTINUE THE TAX AND REPLACE IT WITH A COUNTY WIDE INSURANCE TAX AND GET ALL THE MONEY COUNTY WIDE.CORBINS RESPONSE WILL BE TO PLACE THE OCC. TAX ON THE CITY RESIDENTS WITH PEOPLE IN KNOX COUNTY BEING TAXED TWICE.ONCE BY THE CITY NEXT BY THE COUNTY AND THE WHITLEY PEOPLE PAYING THE INSURANCE TAX TO THE COUNTY AND THE OCC TAX TO THE CITY.IT WOULD BE TO A TAX PAYERS FOR BOTH THE COUNTY AND THE CITY TO BECOME PARTNERS FOR A BETTER TOMMOROW FOR ALL OF US WHO LIVE HERE BY CHOICE.

We, or "You" I should say, need to make sure to elect people who have the same vision, as opposed to people who look out for their own interests. Unfortunately, other than Corbin's new Mayor and a couple of commissioners, we elected the same old "Let's work for ourselves and our upper crust friends, lets jump and tremble in fear when Frankfort says boo" individuals who hold the community hostage unless they get what they want for themselves. None, and I repeat, NONE of the Whitley County elected leaders, State Senators, and very few in Frankfort, work for "the people." Knox county is nearly as bad.
Good luck folks, we are on our way to a new job in North Carolina, where we moved from four years ago. NC knows Tourism, Economic Development, Marketing, Salesmanship, and how to take care of the residents of the state. You have a few solid thinking people here I have met that have the vision, but they keep getting derailed by this local group of morons that have snowed some of you folks on their real abilities and intentions. They snow you that they know world business, that they can manage people, that because of their last name that their intentions are the same as their well respected relatives and ansestors. They snow you into this fictional BS that just becasue they were so-called "Local Athletes" that they are somehow qualified to run and important position, and they snow you into thinking they know what is best for Corbin in the year 2007 - the most competitive time in the history of our nation and the world. These morons also think they can intimidate you, and many of you they do because you fear them. As an outsider, it is sad and pathetic to see. You're afraid to stand up to them, and you let these morons get away with murder.
Folks, wake up and look around at some of the people running the show. These people are the joke, but the world is laughing at you because these people represent you and your city - very poorly I might add.
I agree. I am going to look at some property in another state and we may move. The Whitley County elite and exploiters have sickened us on this area. Every real estate deal for the people ends up as a profit deal for a few cronies. I am anxious to see who the owners are of the land that will be bought for the Cumberland Falls Golf Course.
And the threat that NIBROC is gone this year because the big boy that runs it can't have his way on everything is fine with me. Who cares?

Wow - tell us what you really think.
I think there are a couple of other good elected officials, but for the most I part unfortunately have agree with your post - we are laughed at behind the scenes, by London in particular, and its a few of the people in charge of various commissions that cause the embarassment. We need to get our s**t together and quit letting these few guys (and gals) dictate how we operate our town, unless they can prove to us they can make the right decisions. We will continue to fall behind and lose to other towns such as London and other states if we don't move in a different direction.
The person who posted the last posting and the person he or she responded to absolutely know what they are talking about. I am a life long resident of this area and have seen this behavior all my life. Unfortunately, my profession will not allow me to be vocal but I have managed to step on a few toes a time or two. The " Power Brokers" know me well and know I'm not intimidated. Someday soon these persons will be history and we can prosper as a community. By the way, my roots are in North Carolina also and I'm damn proud of it.

Right on brother. Good luck in NC. Could you do us a favor and take a few of the local morons with you? Give them a title and let them act like they are running the United Nations down there?

After reading all the posts on this Forum I'm buying a home and putting my business in London. You folks are Nuts!
And I plan to put my London house on the market because at least in Corbin people are not afraid to speak up and give their ideas and suggestions. That's what a Democracy is all about. Freedom.

ADIOS AMIGOS MAYBY YOU CAN HELP CORBIN ADVANCE TO THE STATURE OF LONDON, IN A FEW LIGHT YEARS.

London, KY has some of the same issues, and Williamsburg has more, its just in Corbin we are voicing our opinions - some you might agree with, some you might not. Being open about the issues enables Corbin to improve and grow - although I know that's against some peoples wishes here - and we can hopefully take the steps to eliminate some of the deadbeats and clean things up. If we get our commissions and boards running right - and there are several good individuals on them now - and get the right individuals in the remainder of these positions, we can blow past London any day of the week. We just need people in these positions for the right reasons, not for their own little power trips and "Personal Business" reasons. We need individuals who want the Corbin area to excel without fear of losing their "Power and Control."
Everyone knows these same types of characters are everywhere, but the only way to clean it up and make it right is to talk about it in forums such as this one. The next step is to get this same dialog going in the City commission meetings and various board meetings. If you are a Chamber, Tourism, or Industrial board member, take a look at the people around you at your next board meeting and think hard to yourself whether they are on these boards for the right reasons, and are they making the right decisions for you, the the city and the people. You already know the answer about some of them.

Don’t flatter yourself I am moving from Nicholasville with a new business to this area. After reading the mind set of the locals on this forum I chose London.
Corbin and London are very similar. Corbin, however, has a school system that is one of the best in Kentucky. And the Eastern Kentucky University campus in Corbin provides a good education at attractive tuition costs. When it comes to churches both communities have some excellent facilities and pastors.
Nicholasville is a very nice community as well and we hope wherever you settle you will enjoy this area.
It reminds me of a story I heard recently.
A new family moved into a Kentucky community and met with some people who had lived there many years. The new man of the house asked, " What kind of people are there in this community?" The old timer asked him, "What kind of people were there in the community from which you moved here?" The newly arrived man said, " It was a lousy place. The people were horrible." The old timer said, "That's exactly how you will find the people here."
A few weeks later another new couple moved to town and the old timer and his wife met them after church. The newly arrived gentleman asked, "What kind of people do you have in this community?" The old timer asked him back quickly, " What kind of people did you have in the community from which you moved here?" The newly arrived man said, "the people where we lived were wonderful. We hated to leave so many good friends and nice people." The old timer said, "you will love it here because there are so many nice people who will make good friends and neighbors in our community."
If you liked the people in Nicholasville you will like them in Corbin or London.

Soon as Corbin gets this new expo center in place business will explode, Applebee's and several other National Chains know it, that's why they are coming here.
These Folks Invest more before most of you crawl out of bed in the morning, that is if you get out of bed. This was a materstroke by Corbin with this Expo Center and more Business on the way.
Just ask the London movie crowd what happened when the New Tri-County Cineplex opened up, have ya seen the parking lot down there through the week and the weekend? That's right folks, there not going to London anymore.
London City officials and laurel County are smart folks, they know very well what the Impact for Corbin will be when this Expo Center rolls in with 5000 Plus seats!!!!
