Upcoming Governor's Race

Just heard from reliable source that former U. S. Representative from Louisville and current Republican candidate for govenor will be at the London - Corbin Airport for a press conference and major announcement on Monday Febuary 26 at 2:15 PM. I'm going to be there.

I assume you are refering to Ms. Ann Northup. Glad, if true, that she is coming to this area early because I think she would be a breath of fresh air for our state. Has plenty of experience too.

It looks like former Rep. Northrup is the best candidate for the Republicans. Even though the Republicans have really messed up in Washington,DC and in Frankfort the November race for Governor will probably be close.

I believe the Beshear/Mongiardo ticket will be the strongest for the Democrats.

I think Fletcher has done a great job - employment is up, at least for the buddy group of Whitley County. We can't let Fletcher lose, becasue if he does Nighbert, Patrick and the others hired buddies will be back out on the street, and the only other place they can find work is in Williamsburg. Hell, some of them could probably win another election in Whitley County - look at the track record.

I agree. If Fletcher loses the Nighbert-Patrick group would be out of work. This would be a drastic problem to have them out on the street. Fletcher is solid with the Whitley County gang, and if Northrup or a Democratic wins they may have to live by the same rules we have to live by. And we need another four years of Fletcher's power in pardoning people.

Last election, I voted, supported, campaigned for Fletcher for Governor. I made a mistake. Northup is the best choice for the Republicans. Beshear and Mongiardo for the Democrats. Lunsford wears a False Face!

I hope Gov Fletcher wins again. I believe he has a chance to be the all time leading Governor in granting pardons.

And Whitley County will be an important player in this all time record. When Gov. Fletcher does that TV Commercial with the State troopers standing around him and the Governor says "If you get caught in Kentucky driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs I promse that you will get some jail time." Bull crap. If you know the right Republican bosses that doesn't apply to you. How in the world can people want to elect people who don't talk stsight to the people of Kentucky.

I am so tired of hearing the remarks about the evil Whitley County Empire ran by Bill Neighbert and his associates. Neighbert was elected many years to the mayor of Williamsburg, president of the KY League of Cities, and now is the ranks in the Republican Administration in Frankfort. Do you think this man has a strangle hold on the voters of Williamsburg, the mayors across Kentucky, and the Governor? He's not unlike any other aggressive politician who continues to rise through the ranks.

Now, many hold this against Gov Fletcher and think that the fact that he has hired several local people to state jobs is terrible. Although, I have not heard anything bad about hiring and promoting Theresa Hill- was this a good or bad move? Is she now part of the Neighbert Empire?

For all those Neighbert, Patrick, and Whitley county politician hating folks who bad mouth Fletcher based on his hirings, ask yourself a question before you vote: "Do you throw out the baby with the bathwater?" Ernie Fletcher has brought more money and projects to this city and county than any other governor in the past- the Convention Center, new repaved roads, the proposed golf course, etc., etc.. There is no doubt that these projects exist because of Fletcher's associations with the local people in this area and we can expect more to come if we can keep him in office.

If a Democrat or a Louisville Republican wins, how fast do you think the state money in this area will dry up? Personally, I would prefer Neighbert and Hill keep their jobs, not necessarily because they are good people, but so they can help keep bringing home the bacon. That's how all politics work, like it or not, so why not be on the right side of it for your community.

You're entitled to your opinion - elect them whether they are good people or not, but your way of thinking is why things are so screwed up, not only in Frankfort but in DC as well.

I guess the way I look at it, if your neighbor is jerk, runs over your dog, his kid steals your kids lunch money, bribes the coach and gets his kid a spot on the high school basketball team even though your kid is a better athlete, threatens to not mow his grass and take care of his yard unless you vote for him or his buddy in the upcoming neighborhood planning board election, goes out and increases the value of his home using his position of Neighborhood Board Chairman while your neighbors lose money and suffer, but gives you $5,000 to pave your driveway - you going to take his filty money? Sounds like you would, and would probably invite him in for dinner as well.

Jerks are jerks, whether they "service" you or not. This nonsense of "You better do things my way, or you better vote for so and so or we won't give you your road money" isn't the kind of help we should want.

Maybe you feel thats the way politics is, but it doesn't make it right.

You also talk about the money - golf course, convention center, etc... How about money we really need? Increased Law enforcement and pay, BR Hospital Expansion (Marymount in London was given $250 Million for expansion, BRH was turned down for $3.5 million), hiring more teachers and increasing their pay, Cumberland Falls highway at I-75 expansion, South Williamsburg exit expansion - guess it depends on you and your politician's priorities. Unfortunately, the people that they are supposidly serving and that voted for them are usually not their real priority - Whitley County's $18 million debt and occupational tax is proof of that.

Yes, we certainly need more Hal Rogers Waterpark projects.

Is bringing home the bacon more important than integrity and equal justice for all our citizens?

This is supposed to be a great Christian area. We have great churches. But do we just turn our heads if someone brings home the bacon? Both of the Business Parks in Corbin, Knox County were provided during the Administrations of two different Democratic Governors. The bypass from Cumberland Falls Highway to Cumberland Gap Parkway and the Masters Street connection to Kentucky Street were delivered to our area by Democratic Governore.

The Civic Center that will be started soon in Corbin was first started and approved by Gov. Patton. The Technology Center was approved and started to be constructed when Governor Patton was Governor.

Teresa Hill is a wonderful person and deserves to be in Frankfort in a key position. The rest of the Whitley County crew don't compare in any way in talent, effectiveness, and integrity. Regardless of Teresa Hill's political affiilation, she is the kind of person we need in key leadership roles.

Im not sure how you can defend the guy. Look at the mess he and several others have left Whitley County in. The little he has done for the area, which is his job by the way, doesn't compare to the massive crap he has dumped on our area.

I think many of you miss my point about the Neighbert case. One poster was right in that this is a Christian community who shouldn't judge folks on a personal level.

My point in the post is not to defend Neighbert, etc., I don't have any personal history with him or his associates, only what I hear in local gossip circles. I do question so much negativity surrounded by a man who was reelected to office several times and elected to the president of the KY League of Cities. How can one man, no matter how sinister, control the majority of voters in an election AND the majority of mayors in the League of Cities??? Honestly, does anyone believe that this is possible??

On reply to the post that he left Whitley county in a mess: Look at most counties in eastern Kentucky. Whitley and Knox counties are in the same financial shape as most counties in this part of the state. Do they all have evil politicians running the counties, or are they just subject to poor economic climates and rising costs.

My point in the post was to counter the attack on Gov. Fletcher from people who appear to attack him based upon his hiring of Bill Neighbert. That makes no logical sense whatsoever. If you do use that logic, then the hiring of Theresa Hill, being a good person, should cancel out the effect of the Neighbert hiring.

Regardless, I think this community gains more from Fletcher than any other candidate.

I agree. Ernie Fletcher is reducing the number of people in our prisons by giving more pardons and the justice system overlooks the crimes of the powerful and their families. Our jails and prisons should be fully occupied by those poor and powerless folks who steal a loaf of bread to feed their family.

There is no way you can compare the Whitley County leaders in Frankfort with Teresa Hill. She is a much better person and a role model leader.

To the previous Posters! Does Teresa Hill have anything to do with puting whitley Co. in 18 million dolars of debt? I don't think so. Fletcher put burley Foley in as county Judge and claimed he would Do a Fine Job???? What kind of Person in their right mind would do this after he and Mike Patrick put whitley Co. in the biggest Financial mess of the Counties History. By the Way Mike quit after he and Burley put a 1% occcupational TAX on the folks of this County. After this, Mike got a Job with the Fletcher- Nighbert team. You folks are out of touch with the common people of Whitley County and Kentucky itself. I'm referring to the Fletcher Supporters. They are NOT for the Common Man. The Tax burden on Whitley Co., has never been higher due to some of the mismanagement by the folks I have mentioned above. But Gov. Fletcher goes ahead and puts these same folks in Positions of power. Does Fletcher not care that we are Paying a Payroll TAX due to these folks he appointed and claimed they would do great? This sealed the deal for me to work extremely hard against Gov Fletcher. I am going to support Ann Northup for Governor. She is for the Common Person. This is for the Republican Primary I'm referring too. I hope you and your friends do to. Does the previous Poster think that Fletcher Appointing Burley Foley To Judge in Whitley Co. was a great Move? Burley and Mike Contributed to the worst Finacial mess in Whitley Co. History. We are paying for this out of our PAYCHECKS every week. I supported Fletcher last time. And it is the Last! The common People of Whitley County need to stand up and form a grass roots campaign againt GOV FLETCHER. These folks deserve better management in Frankfort than a guy like Ernie Fletcher appointing and hiring individuals who run up a 18 million Dollar debt in Whitley County and Slapped you right in your face with a Tax on your hard earned Paycheck! SOUR GRAPES to the FLETCHER Team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have to agree here, Fletchers appointment of Burley Foley is one of the worst moves he could have made and right square in the middle of the Old 5th district that he has to win to even have a chance. The gov. also hired mike Patrick who along with Foley absolutley destroyed Whitley County.

Foley no doubt was one of the most uneducated and bad business leader that has even been put into office in this county. I agree, I am for Anne Northrop, no way, no how I'll support Ernie Fletcher.

If he does win the nomination I'll have to seriously look to the Democrats this time around, the Payroll Tax on what little I make is enough!!!!!!

I agree with the previous posters. Gov. Fletcher is out of touch with the common people of Kentucky and Specifically Whitley county. One posster claims Fletcher has done more for this area. Be careful! Hal Rogers has done most. And I hate to admit this but David Williams has brought in alot himself. The Fletcher supporters are going to try and take credit for what has been done. Don't be fooled. I agree, Anne northup is the best choice for the Republican party in kentucky's Governor's race. I hope that McConell, Rogers, Williams, and Bunning support Northup for Governor. I hope the folks that read these posts who are Republicans get behind Anne northup. The Fletcher supporters are going to try and scare locals into believing we aint gonna get their golf course. It was a Proposal. What happened???? This was suppose to happen several years ago. You ain't got no golf course under Fletchers administration. You folks in Whitley county got a big Fat Tax on your Income every week. Fletcher appointed the guy to judge that helped do this.??? Let's Republicans stand up and vote this Fletcher OUT of office.

Who are you talking about? The Big men from Whitley are Bill Nighbert, or Mike Patrick or Patrick White. These three now control Whitley County. Each of them have some yes men but they don't come to the party free.

They are dedicated to Governor Fletcher because he is the man who is not afraid to be liberal with pardons. And he is a ultra leberal in creating big paying jobs for Whitley County yes men.

I believe Northrup will rain on their party in the primary, and she or the winner of the Democratic party will change the guard in November.

I am now convinced that if Satin brought a few bucks to Whitley County, we would vote him into office. I'm sick of hearing from a few people that because these corrupt political leaders bring a few bucks to a few of their friends on a few mostly worthless projects, that they are doing good for all of us. They are doing good for a few of you, but for the people out in the county and low-income families, these folks don't do squat. Come on people, wake up and smell the politcal BS - its strong, and its deep. Quit letting these selfish bastards convince you that they are in it for the people. Very few run for honorable reasons, and we don't seem to want to elect many of those that do.

Do you think Northrup will clean up Whitley county governement, or here's a catch 22, Neighbert and the gang will return to Whitley and get elected to their old posts if Fletcher looses??

You make a good point - if Fletcher loses, Whitley County would probably be foolish enough to re-elect them. Then Nighbert could hire Fletcher as assistant to the assistant city outhouse and bingo parlor inspector at $200,000 per.

Better yet, maybe we can increase the occupational tax they created with their mis-management and greed by another percentage point and pay them to move to another state or country.

I can Guarantee you that Anne Northup wouldn't take a sitting Magistrate in a county, that this same Magistrate help run up a 18 million dollar debt in less than five years, slapped a payroll TAX on every working person in the county, and then put them in as the County Judge?????

What kind of Person would do this??? GOV. ERNIE FLETCHER. Sounds like he really cares about Whitley county Folks.

In fact, I'll give you one better than this! I don't think anybody reading these posts would do what Fletcher did. Put a guy who helped create the biggest financial MESS in Whitley County History and Appoint this person to the Judge Executives Office. WOW!!!

And all Fletcher's supporters are runnning around Corbin and Williamsburg crying about a Golf course down at the Falls. These Folk's are OUT of touch with the common people of Whitley County and Kentucky.

Anne Northup is a better choice in my opinion for Whitley Countians and for the Great State of Kentucky.

The energy project that could have made a difference for Corbin and our Eastern Kentucky area was not passed in this session of the State Legislature. The coal liquification program would eventually help our nation become more independent in our energy sources and less dependent on the middle east.

This program would also provide a cleaner form of energy. Our nation needs to get out of the hands of the oil barons in the middle east. We are talking about a huge program that would employ many people with some high paying jobs. Sometimes I don't believe our legislatures are serious about jobs. It is interesting that since that program died in the legislature the price of gasoline is going up again. When oil prices are down this liquification does not save us much money. When oil prices are higher the program is financially feasible. But I would rather pay a little higher if it was going to our Kentucky and US workers instead of going overseas where we are all tangled up in a war to protect our oil supply. I want us to get to that position when we don't have to depend on people who despise us. I hope our news media in this area gets us some of the facts about why this program was not approved.

Bob Terrell, Sr.
