Cycling is becoming more and more popular in this area. I would like to see a city backed bike trail thoughout the city. Berea has one, and london is talking of one as well. Cyclists spend money when they come in also. This isn't a new thing in the country, but in this area it has taken off in the past 5 or so years. You'd be amazed at the number of people that ride now.
And, it's healthy. It promotes physical fitness, and no pollution.
Great, great post. We have nowhere to bike, and we enjoy some of the most scenic landscape in the U.S. I think a great area would be on the south side, from the area around the new Expo Center to and on the bypass towards the EKU Corbin campus. Unfortunately it would take co-operation from some of the land owners, which isn't likely.
I don't know if the trails at the falls allow bikes or not.
This is a great idea. If the local area bicyclers got together and approached the mayor and a couple of the commissioners, it could get started. Look what the skateboard thing did.
I'd say McBurney, Shelton and Lynch would be for it. They seem to have very progressive attitudes.
Isn't London starting a bike trail project through the downtown?
We took our family to Hilton Head, SC last month and the bicyc;e trails and number of people all ages riding bikes was amazing. In the evenings at the beach it was great to see all the families with kids and grandkids going up and down the beaches. This is great exercise and we need to have a recreation area that has jogging, walking, and jogging trails. Thanks for bringing this subject to the forum.
Bicycle trails would be great. I just bought a road bike last month, and I do most of my riding on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when the traffic isn't horrible. Anybody have an interest in putting together a weekly group ride?
A bike trail would be a great idea and bring in some out-of towners as well. Another idea in addition to the town trail would be a mountain bike trail. If you access the web and look around for these you'll notice that they are all out of town. It would definiteley keep people who do this in town. I know tons of people who travel around the state looking for new trails and if this goes through it would be put on their list. If there are trails -please let me know where!
Those are great ideas. Some communities have made walking, jogging, and bike trails a good way to help their people stay healthy and enjoy the outdoors.
Bike trails would go along with the walking trail the City built on the creek.actually the city has been progressive on such matters. they are now working on a skate board park

A skate park is another excellent idea. I see many kids next to Central Baptist Church skating in the streets. Would keep them out of harms way and close to an area that can be monitored.
Anybody know of any off-road bike trails close to town or parks?
I believe it would be a good idea to get rid of the stop light in front of the post office. Also, we should put plantboxes in the NIBROC Park. We also need a new library.
I agree that a bike trail in Corbin would be a great addition! I have three young kids, and would love to take them for a family bike ride, but there's really no where to go in town that I would feel safe with the kids riding also. There is either too much traffic or not enough visibility for the kids to ride safely on the roads. Would be a great new thing for Corbin!
I agree with wkugirl that the bike trails would be great. It would help us and our kids to stay in shape and would be an opportunity for families or individuals to enjoy the outdoors.
This website message board gives our city and county leaders some good ideas and suggestions. I hope they keep up with it. Many people are intimidated about going before the commission at a regular meeting. They know they will only get a minute or two.
I took my bike around the area by the new civic center, and I'm not sure if that would be the best place due to the hills, but anywhere is better than nowhere. We're probably just stuck with the laurel lake/baldrock area for mountain biking, and the corbin roads (with not so good drivers) for road riding.
Levi, do you know of any good bike paths or trials within 25 miles of Corbin? Seems to be tough to locate a good place to ride. I don't think there is anything out at the Falls, but do you know if Levi Jackson, Dr. Thomas Walker, Burnside or any other areas have bike trails?
The only place I know of around here is laurel lake. I usually park at the dam and ride from there. Here's some directions: http://www.dirtworld.com/trails/trail.asp?id=12844&trail_name=Corbin%20City%20Dam%20Mountain%20Bike%20Trail
This is a great idea, not only for locals but for people within 30 to 50 miles of Corbin. I hope this commissioner you are referring to makes this happen.
