NIBROC suggestions for 2008

I know you're thinking "oh gosh, another nibroc thread to gripe about". But, no, I think this one is very valid. Many of us cannot or will not get down to the committee meetings next year. But, there are many great ideas that has come out on this site about nibroc.  That said, we need to offer our suggestions to the committee.

Please, please, just put your suggestions for what you would like to see or have for next year, and also what you would NOT like to see or have.  Be constructive, and considerate.  If you can, explain your requests, as it sometimes helps more to know why you do or don't want something than to just suggest or complain about it.

Please leave the personal issues on the other nibroc thread.

And, leave the money and budget issues on the other thread as well. My intent is to offer good, solid, constructive suggestions for the nibroc festival.

I will promise this, next year when I read the committee is preparing to meet, I will print off this thread and send it to the chairman, all the committee members, the mayor, and all the commissioners, by register mail, to make sure they at least get our suggestions. What they do with them is their business however.

I will not send any personal slams or gigs from this thread, and that's the way that is.  I'll even ask the administrator here to remove any threads that aren't constructive or suggestive in nature or appear to be personal issues or money issues as far as the budget issues goes. (he may not do it, but I can ask).

I'll stop here, and post some of my ideas.

Thanks.

1. Move all vendors to one side of the street, and use the street for vendors from 7th to gordon hill.  Start now by moving the electrical service points to the one side of the street, and add some if necessary. This will give us much needed room for walking, talking,, strollers, and the trash buggys. People love to stop and talk, and this will greatly help the groups that do congregate.

2. On each block, on the opposite side of the street of the vendors, place a covered sitting area with tables and chiars, for folks to rest, talk, and eat in.  This is in addition to nibroc park.  I noticed many older and handicapped folks having a rough time.  And, babies needed fed.

3. Put the central baptist church stage on a side street. The stage is too big for that area, even though it didn't stick out past the other vendors tents. The persons wanting to watch had to sit on the other side, with all the nibrocers passing through.  This is a great event, but it needs out of the main stream of the street. Put them in the alley of 5th, as it, the alley,  should be closed.  The persons watching the singers were frustrated with the crowd walking through, and many of the passers by felt bad because they were walking in between the singers and the spectators.  You have to keep

4. Make Kentucky street a two way street for this. Start at each end where the traffic splits, and simply route it straight through.  This will alleviate most all the problems.  Put the traffic lights on flash unless it backs up, and then have officers directing traffic when needed.

5.  Motorcycles are vehicles. THey park like everyone else.  They were crowding the area behind hardees, and they shouldn't have been there. Move them out.  If the riders are afraid to leave their bikes, then don't ride them in.  An idea would be to have a lot for them only.  If they charge to park, then so be it, everyone with a lot did this year, and motorcycles are no different.

6. Have a limit that the vendors can extend into the street, especially if you don't do the one side thing.  Several vendors have larger tents or trailes than others. The Motorcycle dealer had their stuff too far out into the walking area and with vendors on both sides of the streets, it was a bottleneck.

7. Keep the back sidewalks behind the vendors clear, especially if you don't do the one side thing. THis is about the only way the older folks and strollers can get around easily and safely.

8. Contact some of the vacant lot or other lot owners, and offer them a credit on their property taxes to allow free parking on their lots during nibroc. Charging for parking is free enterprise I know, and it's private property and all that, and allowing a group to charge to raise money with parking is fine and dandy, but, when out of towners come in, and have no idea how the city is laid out, they get frustrated having to pay from 3 to 5 bucks to park and not knowing where free street parking is available.  I know this one will get some flack, but it needs said.

9. Move the volleyball.  It's run it's course as far as being a spectator event, and the alley's take up good space for other events or vendors.  The court next to nibroc park is a good example. THey just don't match.  The first several years it was fine, but it's time for a change.  Since Depot street is closed the entire length, put the courts at the end by 7th, and up by hall watsons.  Even contact the property owners where the old poynter electric was, and you could put two courts there.  I know them, they are good people, its worth an ask.

Based on comments found on this site, I suggest;

1. If there are not enough volunteers or workes, or emergency officials to work the crowds, then hire some.  You have private security companines available, or the best thing, call the many off duty police officers in the area and let them work the crowds in uniform.  They do this for others, so why not for us.  They deserve to make some extra cash, give them a chance.

2. If it's necessary to use volunteers or nibroc workers, have someont that is experienced, like the police dept, to train them quickly in the very basics of crowd control.

3. The nibroc director should be out and about in the crowd area, not behind the stage.

4.  Change the advertisments  to reflect the seating requirements as stated on another thread here.  I had never thought about it as we stand in the back anyway. Many from out of town don't know our routine.

5. Put some officers on a couple of the roofs to observe.  THis will help in directing officers to hot spots.

I would like to see a designated parking area for handicapp folks only.  They would have to have the plate, sticker, or placard to verify that that is the person using it, like they do at Bristol.  In other words, the kids can't use granny's car with the sticker to park there for nibroc.

ANd, in addition, to have a type of shuttle service for the handicap parkers only, to help them get back an forth from the downtown area to their cars.

Wife's mother has a placard, and she has to take many breaks when walking, but she loves nibroc, but can't go because she has to park so far away.

Very Good suggestions:

One Major problem as the crowds have grown is capacity, there is finite amount of room available, this includes space for the concerts, vendors, parking etc.

Even with the listed Improvements there is still a Capacity issue. The Board may want to explore putting on the concert in another location, using several sites to expand Nibroc may be something everyone should think through and try to deploy in the future.

As the show gets bigger it will need to be spread out a little more. In the old days the downtown folks thought this would hurt Nibroc, I think we are past that point now and could easily expand the show. Maybe some outside consulting would not hurt either to look over this and think through it a little more, it's a good problem to have but the downtown may just be too small to accomadate what the needs are and will be over the next 10 Years or so.

Going through town today, I thought of this.

Have a shuttle service from the outlying parking areas.  Although some of them are private property, I don't think it would be that big of a deal. You'd have to check of course.

The shuttles like at Kings Island and stuff. School buses would be ok, but they'd be expensive fuel wise, and you have to have the proper drivers license to drive one (CDL-P)

In east corbin, there's a couple of church's, the rotary park, the old IGA lot, the catholic church, and even the shopping center.

In south corbin, there's fewer closer to town, but there's the kroger/bowling alley area.  And, the high school lots.

I know this would be a money thing, but, with the right equipment, you could charge .50 a head to ride them.

Just a thought.

This service has been offered several times in the past. Several locations were available for pick-up--Civic Center, Shopping centers, high school, at no charge to anyone however they were used very little--I guess you must of been in Boca Raton those times

All Great thoughts, I like the shuttle service thought. Unfortunatley, Shuttle to where? the Downtown is just not enough space, eventually this will hurt everyone including Vendors ability to make money and our ability to bring them in as the Nibroc expands.

Where are all the available spaces in Corbin (By-Pass, maybe, Civic Center?) and how could we make use of them?

Great Thoughts from everyone!!!!

I remember a few years ago when they did the shuttle, using school buses I believe. Maybe more than a few years at that.

It wasn't advertised that well, the shuttle service.

It could be tried on a small scale.

At least a shuttle type service if they do the handicap parking lot thing somewhere. I know someone that I can contact about their property for this.

Accordig to the lady in the paper, there's no other way for a few things we've talked about here. Typical of that committees elitist attitude.

As far as the carts and trash and such, sorry, there's a way.  Put all the vendors on one side of the street, and you'll have plenty of room.

Maybe it's time for her to hit the road too.

Boy, that was rude.  I thought she defended herself and the NIBROC committee quite well.  Are these minor issues really worth fighting about?  NIBROC was great this year and it seems like some people are pissed about that.  If you feel like every one of your suggestions should be implemented, maybe you are the elitist.

I think that many people are just tired of having none of their ideas even listened to, let alone implemented. And while nibroc was great for many of us - those of us who sat in the great seats, got to sneak into the special parking areas, got to party at the Depot - we forget that there were thousands of others that didn't quite have the same great time we got to have.

Just how many of you partied at the Depot?

The drinking click is not representative of the people of Corbin.

What is representative of Corbin? There are skinny, fat, medium built people. There are Baptist, Mormon, Methodist, Nazarene, Catholic, Hindu, Church of God, and other religious people. There are brown, black, blond, red, grey and bald headed people.  Some are tall, some are short, some are average in heighth.

If you don't like the Depot you don't have to go there. But don't show that holier than thou attitude. Do what you want, others can do what they want, and as long as we don't break the law respect our rights.

I agree with the poster that said the depot crowd does not represent the voters of corbin but it does sound like you are important with the "great seats, special parking areas and party at the depot".

Someone mentioned a party at the Depot. I saw a bunch of guys at Nibroc wearing shirts that had Depot Security on the back. Does the Depot need that much security?

You have GOT to be kidding.  Rick is in REHAB from a stroke, and there are thousands of people downtown for a festival, and he serves alcohol.  I would hope they would be prepared for whatever might happen.  If it was my business, I would have LOTS of extra security, and I might even buy them a cool T-shirt.

It may have just been a Nibroc promotional thing.

I wish Rick Curry well and hope that he has a speedy and full recovery.

The lady's letter talked about the carts picking up trash and the police patroling. I didn't see the police riding up and down main street in them, they were walking, and talking, and they were very nice and professional.  The people picking up the trash were the problem.  There is a better way. You just have to take the time to find it.

One thing, it was also mentioned before.  There were probably over 200 seats lost by allowing those motorcycles to park behind hardees like they did. They were just showing off anyway.  Ban those motorcycles from the area.  They are no better than the rest of us.  And don't use the private property issue as an excuse.

And I like the handicap parking lot idea. My mother needs that type of thing, then maybe she can come down to nibroc too. Great idea. Lets see if the Joan Rich lady can do something about that.  That's a very good suggestion.

Move the volley ball out of the mainstream areas.  Its a sporting event, put it at a sporting area.  The areas where the courts are now could be used for other viable events or booths, especially the one by nibroc part. That area could have another tent covered area, or a few vendors.  Several times while we were watching things under the tent, or eating, the volleyball would come bouncing into us.

It used to be very well attended, and is still a good event.  Put the volleyball up at the civic center or somewhere.

How about a NIBROC walkers poker run, like the motorcycles do sort of.

Set up with vendors from say, Corbin flower shop down to the new Rite Aid, and have a walking poker run.

There are hundreds of walkers in town, and they love to walk the main street area with the new sidewalks.

Yes, a NIBROC walking poker run would be good.

How about it.

I suggest a bicycle race or ride.

I've had my bike for seveal months now, and there's a lot of them in corbin.  A race might be too much, but have a ride, like down 5th st, turn left on scuffletown, down to the falls road, then down to peach corner, and back to main st.

We'd need some police help of course, but it would be fun.
