game times

I know there has been a problem with scheduling football this year, due to lack of field space.  But, do we really want our 1st graders playing sports or cheerleading at 10:00pm on a school night???  This is a little ridiculous.  And I'm sure the teachers really appreciate it at school the next day, with tired and cranky children.

I can't believe lst and 2nd grade are even playing football or cheerleading, isn't that to young.  No wonder no one likes it by the time high school.  They start to early.

I agree neither one is a cardio sport.  We need our children out running and getting in shape.  Thats why our kids are so fat.

I strongly disagree.  Cheerleading and football are both cardio activities, plus they are involved in a team, and out of the house.  I agree 9:00pm games are too late, but since the only field available was Lynn Camps, and there were so many kids signed up, it was the only way to get all the games in.  Lynn Camp still uses that field to practice on, so the games had to be scheduled around their practices. Each of the teams have a two late games each.  By next year the new field will be completed at the civic center and there will be better times available. I hate to hear all these comments about how football makes fat kids. Seditary lifestyles, with kids who are not interested in anything but TV and video games, make fat kids.  Lets support any activity that gets them on their feet.

A college football coach from another area told me he can't believe how young kids are starting to play football. He said he didn't think it was right to start kids in football before they get to middle school. He said, "first of all they are going to be burned out. Second, there is a greater risk for injury if they get hit hard when their bones are still growing. Third, they need a chance to be kids for awile." He said flag football or touch with their buddies for recreation would be better."

My dad played football and I played football. He would never have permitted me to start formal football in the first or second grade.

I do have my six year old twins cheerleading this season. Before I had children, I said I would not start them so young. But things have changed so drastically since I was a kid, now it seems we have to "structure" our kids involvement and participation in things. Unfortunately, the days of kids running free and playing like we did, are long gone. We are so afraid of someone snatching them up, that you just can't let them run like we had the great pleasure of doing. It is a sad reality, so I think parents, including me, feel like we need to get them involved in things since they can't run loose in the neighborhood, or ride their bikes across town, or play from daylight to dark without our supervision. So, we sign them up for cheerleading, football, gymnastics at way earlier ages than we would have thought. It saddens me so much to think that this generation of kids will totally miss out on the freedoms that we had in childhood. But, what do you do????
