The last poster has a great idea. Get someone else to pay for everything. How much do you personally intend on contributing? Or do you just want to spend someone else's money? A typical Democrat.

If you check, many of the ones who are now giving gifts to the Library are Democrats. You couldn't resist ripping Democrats. The poster before you provided some of his or her thoughts and you just had to make it political.
Where did the money come from for the land the Whites' sold for the new jail in Whitley County? The money came from our taxes. Who did it go to?
The money for the new airport in Whitley County came from somebody, didn't it? The money came from our taxes for an airport that sits there empty. Who got our tax money for that land?
Where did the money come from for the new Williamsburg Post Office? (I am glad it was built but they sure won't build one for Corbin.) The money came from the taxpayers. Who got the money for the land?
Who is going to pay for the new Judicial Building in Williamsburg? The taxpayers like you and me?
But you don't want a new library for Corbin. You insulted the person who posted just before your post. Why? Because you don't like Democrats even though that person may not be a Democrat.
Where did the money come from for the new Williamsburg
I posted the one three up, and I'm a hard core, die hard republician. I won't vote that way this governors election, or next year in the presidential election, as the republicians are embarassing and have their heads up their tails, on all levels. There you go, hows that.
I thought it was a pretty good plan. I still do.
We have some very generous people around here. Sure they get a huge tax break for donating money or property, but the community benefits in the long run.
Forcht donated the land for the Expo center. Sure his tax break was big, but the donation will carry on for decades.
The Penningtons donated the land for the EKU campus. Sure the got a tax deduction, so what, the whole region will prosper from their generosity.
And if several of these and and more people felt strongly about a new library, they could do this too.
What's wrong with asking. All they can do is just say no. Wes Tipton wrote a letter in the paper recently about the library, and he stated he visits it almost daily. Maybe his firm would donate a generous amount. Why not.
We need to build something new in downtown to revitalize things. A new library would be great...how about the old Cox's House of Furniture building. It needs to be torn down anyway as it looks bad and its just a matter of time before the windows are broken.
The Tipton lawyers own the lot on the corner of 7th an Depot. Get them to donate it, and the city can buy the old gas station on 7th and main, and put it there.
While the idea of downtown revitilazation is a great idea, the biggest problem with putting a library downtown would be the parking. Parking in town is awful, not to mention the traffic. A new library needs to be done in a area where parking and accesiblity is easy.
I still think that hte Childers-Freeman lot on main street is the best location. If the new library would let them hang a sign on the building I know they would donate the property for free.
These people who are considering the lawyers to give them something are living in a fantasy world. Jeff Tipton, Freeman and Childers are as tight as they come. Asking them to give land is like taking candy from a baby. Lets try and get a new plan
After Wes Tiptons letter he wrote to the paper about the library and the staff, saying how much he uses it each week, why wouldn't he donate to it.
If I were him I wouldn't give the city a thing after the people of the town talked about him on this message board. He is one of the finest people I know. He and his wife would do anything for Corbin. I have worked with both of them on many committees. The work he has done for Rotary, City Commission etc. has been tremendous. But after reading this message board, If I were him I wouldn't give the people of Corbin anything. If anything they should show more appreciation to his work on various committees.
The same goes for the City Commissioners, Mayor and the rest of the town who give their time, talent and money to make Corbin a better place to live. I one of these days want to see my grandchildren return to Corbin and start their families here. Its not going to happen if we continue to have the division we have among the people.
So you're giving credit to this board for all the people of the town. You're saying this board is the majority, previous poster. As much as I believe in this board, and enjoy reading and sometimes posting here, this is not the majority of the town. The majority of the town doesn't know about this board. If they did, you would have so many posts and threads, you couldn't keep up. You would have people knocking down the city leaders doors wanting to know "why".
You you say Wes and his wife should judge the whole town by this board. You're either very narrow minded, related to one or both of them, or just spouting off to get a stink started. Wes is smarter than that. Sure he gets caught up in the thrill of politics sometimes, who wouldn't in his position. So what. He has the time, the money, and the position to do so. It bothers me that he's let the unsavory characters like Estep and Carpenter pull the wool over his eyes. Wes is where he is because of his hard work and dedication. The E&C (Estep & Carpenter) group is where they're at because of riding the coat tails of anyone they think can drag them around.
If he is doing his civic deeds because he wants to, and expects no reward or public recognition, the that's great. If he is doing it for political influence or gain, then they deserve what they get.
We're talking about something that won't happen for years here, building a new library. It may never happen.
Back to the Library issue:
The city will waste money on anything they can before a library. They'll do football fields, sidewalks, anything they can, except build a new library.
Why, because not enough prominent people use it, and it gets no publicity.
Has Freeman- Childers backed out of donating land for a new library? If the library board would promise them free bill board space on the side of the building they would jump at donating the land on main street.

Hey if Freeman Childers get a new billboard then I will donate something so I can get a billboard on the other side of the building.

Instead of Freeman-Childers or the Tiptons contributing the land why don't you donate some. You are really dedicated to giving away someone else's property.

It has been several years since I was inside the Corbin Library. I was appalled at the lack of materials available for the research I was doing. I couldn't believe a town the size of Corbin didn't have a better library. I don't mean to criticize Corbin, but compared to libraries in towns much smaller, Corbin is falling short in a providing a facility that the residents would be proud of. A good modern library is such an asset to any community. Even if the people don't get involved in reading, a library offers many other good services. If a location is the problem, why not consider the building just vacated by the Victorian Restaurant. It would be perfect. It has a parking lot behind the bldg, and there is available space on the upper level for programs relating to community functions, lectures, quilt shows, art displays, children's activities, etc. Rather than purchasing property and erecting a new building, I would think there would be considerable savings in just renovating a building like the one I mentioned. A very attractive library could be designed in that building. Anybody else see the possibilities?

Yes, a great idea, but I would wonder about the square footage of usable space.
Also, it would have to be an almost lifetime lease with Poynter. You couldn't afford to buy the building, you could build a new one and purchase property cheaper.
It is a nice, astetically pleasing building though.
I like the idea of the old Goldenberg's building downtown, or the old Newberry's.
