Halloween 2007 event on Wednesday

The Halloween event was outstanding yesterday, with one count from a Main Street business of over 1300 in just two hours. This year Main Street traffic was blocked off, which was the smartest thing they have done in years. I stayed much longer with my kids because I was much more relaxed not having to worry about traffic speeding by just a few feet away from the kids. The costume contest was also great, and there were some pretty awesome costumes that won. I just wanted to say, it was the best Halloween we have ever had in Downtown Corbin.

I agree. The turnout was amazing, and having Main Street closed was so much better this year. I couldn't believe how many kids and parents were there this year. By far, the best downtown Trick or Treat yet.

I HAVE SINCE BEEN READING THESE POST THRU TO SEE JUST WHO GETS SLAMMED AND WHO DOESN'T. IT IS A VERY INTERESTING TOPIC. READ AND SEE FOR YOUR SELF AND THEN MAKE YOUR JUDGEMENT.

oNE NOTE: CLOSING THE MAIN STREET YESTERDAY RIGHT DURING THE BUSIEST TIME WHEN SCHOOL WAS LETTING OUT WAS VERY CONFUSING AND AS I REMEMBER PEOPLE IN TOWN DIDN'T LIKE CLOSING MAIN STREET FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES WHEN SCHOOL IS IN SESSION!

Yes, the City Commission did a good job with Hallowen this year.

Why does the Main Street Director continually take jabs at The City Commission. Don't they pay her salary? This does not seem like a smart thing to do.

I agree with you. The Mayor and Commissioners do a great job. I congratulate them. I believe that the Main Street manager also worked hard on the trick or treat event. It looked like it drew a large crowd. I do not like the closing of main street though. We need to come up with events for downtown that does not require closing off downtown. That defeats the purpose.

I have noticed that too. Some people think the main street program is some sort of independent agency. It is a department of the city and the main street manager is an employee of the city. I have heard the mayor say this and that he and the commissioners fully support the program. I would like to see the bickering stop. I hear grumbling from some of the downtown business people every now and then that the manager is somehow mistreated. That is bull. I don't know if this is fired up by the main street manager herself or some of her misguided friends. It is no secret that she hangs out with two or three people all of the time. They have their own agendas, problems and hangups and will drag the main street manager down if she is not careful. She needs to put a stop to this and work more closely with  the chamber and tourism. I also agree about not closing main street. That puts a strain on a lot of folks. We can do better than that.

Sorry if a complement for the Halloween event fuffled your feathers, but I never mentioned the Main Street program or people, I just said it was great. And closing Main Street was great for the kids and the event, I'd rather look after the saftey of a thousand kids than worry about you being delayed a few minutes in traffic.

1. The Main Street program was slammed by the Publisher in the News Journal.
2. The Main Street program Director was slammed by the Chamber and Economic Development Dirctor, and Mayor McBurney very appropriatly moved her office to City Hall.
3. The City Manager has been critical of her.
4. Did you go to the City Commission meeting when local business people and citizens stood up for her?
5. A community that has quality and safe programs for their children is a good example of the value system of the people. How can anyone complain about such a successful Haloween Night of Trick or Treating? I drove down near Main Street and it looked like a great evening for many children and their parents and grandparents. Some people get totally thrown off by any kind of change.
6. She is doing a great job.

During NIBROC many downtown businesses close because there is no business at all for them. That is a lot different than having kids with their parents downtown for several hours on Halloween night.  Verrrrryyy Interesting!

You are kind of overdoing the Main Street Manager praise. Please no more. It is in very poor taste. A couple of personal cronies trying to talk up the Main Street Manager. And the Trick or Treat non-sense. That is like hiring a $30,000 a year person to do the July fireworks and praising them when 5,000 people show up. They would have showed up anyway. Parents have brought kids to Main Street on Halloween for years. It has nothing to do with the Main Street manager. Lets just start seeing some improvement on Main Street. Surely this will come soon. The program has been in operation for a year. What is the plan?

Come on Don, back off. You and Bruce have no dog in this fight. It was Haloween. Let the kids have their fun. Remember, the child you insult today, could be the doctor, nurse, or lawyer that keeps you out of trouble in 15 or 20 years.

I feel sorry for you. You wear Don and Bruce out. What a hangup!

Maybe you could try Tom and Jerry for a while and see if you feel better.

I am not sure about Tom but Jerry posts on the board quite often.

I have heard the rumor that you are Daffy Duck. Please tell me, please, please.

Please don't feel sorry for me. I am doing quite well for a 90 year old and I can

still kick your rear end Daffy, you young whippersnapper.

Wow, all of this because of two posts saying that Trick or Treat was really good this year?? That was it. Nothing was mentioned as to who should get the credit for the success of the event in either post. But, it was turned into who gets bashed and who doesn't???

You did not even read my post. Look up above and you will see that I said "I drove down near Main Street." In fact I drove to the Central Baptist Parking lot and took some clothes to the cleaners.  The Police Officer at 4th and Kentucky was doing a good job and we both commented about what a nice afternoon it was for the kids to have fun. I was amazed at how many kids were out with their parents or grandparents  enjoying Halloween.

Shop owners were passing out treats and laughing and complimenting the kids on their costumes.  How can anybody get upset when our children are having safe and happy moments in their lives?

Who's upset? You are the one who started slamming the News Journal, the Chamber and the Economic Development Director. We need real change on Main Street. Not just give away events so the county folks will come to town. The Trick of Treat event is Ok but it is just like the Fireworks show in July. A lot of effort on a lot of folks and a lot of traffic for little or no benefit to Corbin. It is just another smoke screen.

It sounds like you are the Scrooge of Halloween. Were you ever a child?

Why don't you sign up and donate your time and expertise? Maybe you can come up with a better plan than the successful one used in hundreds of cities like London, Ashland and Stanford. Maybe you can speed it up to where it happens overnight instead of the 3 to 5 years it takes everywhere else. You sound like an expert, so why don't you go to one of the next meetings and lay out your improved game plan, or better yet, present it to us at the next Commisioners meeting at City Hall?

This is exciting, and I can't wait. We might be just like Danville or Gatlinburg in just a few months with people like you and your vast knowledge of how to build a financially successful downtown!

But until you have the guts to do that, let her do her job they way it has been proven to work and stop trying to derail her efforts just because it is not under your control.

Everytime someone posts something positive about an event like Halloween and you post your stupidity like the third message from the top, it makes you and your little group extremely obvious and very appear very childish.
