Looks like they approved over $10thousand for two trailers. What a good use for our monies collected from the chamber of commerce members dues. Maybe they can get some government surplus toilet seats for $500. I'm sure there's some left somewhere in a supply depot.
We lost Harley, we may be losing Vangent, and they think two trailers are the way to spend their money. And, the one of the trailers is for the nibroc stuff. If I understand correctly, the other is a Chamber of Commerce Recruiting Trailer. Is that correct?

Its all about accountability - or at least it should be. I know of a couple of Chamber Board members who are fed-up with the chamber and will leave shortly. I'm sure there are a couple of others that feel the same way, and the remaining few want to back the chamber only because they and their friends get to feel like rock stars at the exclusive Corbin Summer Super Bowl Party, also known as the Nibroc concerts. They print an extra thousand tickets that are dolled out like Arby's coupons to their buddies instead of going to sponsors.
Wrong reason to be on any board. Hats off to those who do the right thing and right the ship.

Which board members are you talking about here? I'd like to know so I can congratulate them for being so independent and strongminded.
Apparently you have a hard time understanding. The trailer is for the Chamber of Commerce for use in member recruitment, ribbon cutting, etc. The Economic Development Director is in charge of industrial recruiting. If you have a problem with him you should contact members of the Industrial Development Board. They do the hiring and the firing. The last Economic Development Development was fired by the Industrial Board. I don't know all of them but I do know that Dave Huff Sr, Ron Herd, John Wooley and Bo Eubanks are on that board. Those people are sound citizens and wouldn't have an Economic Development Director that did not follow their directives. They are the ones to talk to if you have a problem with the Economic Development Director.

No, we understand very clearly, we're going to haul around a trailer advertising our Industrial Development Board. Will they sell hot dogs and pepsi too. Popcorn and cotton candy. Who will man it, Bruces assistant Ms. Rich.
That $10k they're spending should go to nibroc expenses.
Better yet, go down to the vocational school, and have them build you a trailer. It'll be better than anything you can buy, and for half the cost, and it can advertise our vocational school.
No. You are having a hard time with this. The trailer is for the Chamber. The Chamber is not the Industrial Development Board. I know it must be tough for you on the outside looking in but maybe you should read the post again.

I hope re-reading the post cleared it up for you. Everyone else already understands.
I'm sorry, it's the chamber of commerce and not the industrial development that the trailer is for, right? Now I get it, this should be a wonderful tool to attract local business to join the local chamber. Nothing like a nice mobile trailer to attract non-members who we need to be a part of our chamber.
At night maybe we can hide it down at the dixie trailer part and rent it out and make a least a little money, by day sell hot dogs and cotton candy. What an absolutley absurd use of 10K!
Hey!!!! City Commissioners & Mayor, this has got to be humiliating to us as a city and community when 10K could do a dozen different things?
I can not believe any elected leader would not question 10K for a portable Hotdog stand for our chamber of commerce, what in this world are we thinking?????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Will setting up trailers in town help draw people in to become members of the Chamber? I mean, its not like Corbin it is big city where it takes time to drive the distance to the chamber. Any business person in town should be able to drive to the Chamber in, what, five to ten minutes tops? Just because a trailer would be set up, that means the people still have to go to them. Wouldn't it be better for the chamber to come to the businesses? I mean, walk inside the business, and tell the business owner what the chamber can do for them, and why they need to join? To me, that would be more pro-active, than passively sitting in a trailer waiting for businesses to join. It's not much different than sitting in the chamber office waiting for people to join. So, why spend the money? Couldn't the money be spent on a more pro-active form of membership drive or to help with economic development? Just a thought.

The first big question most global companies ask when they consider establishing a business in a new area is "How many trailers does the Chamber have?" When the Chamber has more than one old trailer this is a big deal to major global companies. These trailers will certainly bring in new companies and probably keep companies that are here from moving away. This is one of the biggest moves we have made since back in the 1920's a local bakery invented sliced bread and doughnut holes.
Very Good Post from the last two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's almost like believing this is year around nibroc and everyone is just going to stumble in and join, not quite. Maybe putting a large disco ball on top and having revolve may help?
Now let's see if we can put a few things in perspective. We reject Mrs. Myers attempt to improve the city with an art project with a clear return on investment with facts & data and then turn around and give sam's a mobile hot dog stand and business is suppose to come to him????
What in this world are we thinking, who actually suggested this. Is that top secret? Please folks, tell us which of our officials had knowledge of this fiasco?????

Now we begin to see the real purpose of your criticism. Put the Chamber down because things didn't go your way with the art project. The Main Street amigos need to drop this.
I think the chamber has pretty much created this one on their own, there are at least a dozen different well qualified things we could have spent 10k on in this city.
Again, who's idea was this and sign your name? I'll bet no one will step up and take responsibility for doing this as it's about as silly a stunt that we have ever tried to pull off and certainly an embarassment to the way we fund projects.
We are losing hundreds of jobs, our area is one of the poorest in the nation, that's right, nation!!!
But yet we spend money on a trailer for the chamber and our leadership thinks this will again do what for our city??????
I heard London is Green with Envy and will lay down, be nice guys and stop stealing businesses from us if we let them use our Chamber Wennie Trailer to help Vangent move North and to haul a few Harleys.

You people are nuts! There is no scandal here. Its obvious that you just have an axe to grind with the Chamber because you didn't get your way on something one time so you are coming on this board and acting like bratty children crying an moaning about everything they do. I'd say you aren't very well liked in the community, so you are forced to post here as your only outlet.
I'm a member of the chamber and I went to the last lunch event Tuesday. They announced about 6 or 7 new members there, just like they do every month. The room was full. The chamber has more members than it ever did when some of the people you admire so much were in charge. They must be doing something right.
You are in a very small minority with your complaints. Nobody like sore losers.
Wow! A member of the chamber, 6 or 7 new members per month? How about the Harley Dealership? Are they a member? I'm sorry they packed up and moved to London, maybe we can talk Vangent into hanging around also but that deal is done folks and we all know it.
10K for the Mobile Weenie mobile is absurd, if you had a packed house last week and did not contest this move then your as bad as the leadership, any member that does not speak up for the right use of funds is as responsible as the folks who misuse their authority.
Your hand has been caught in the cookie jar and your feeling the pressure of misuse of funding for a silly trailer that cost the tax payers 10K dollars and the made us the laughing stock of southeast ky.
You might have had a packed house last week but maybe it was the London Chamber meeting you stumbled into and did not quite know it?
If you are a member, then you can answer a question of mine from a previous post that I really want to know. How many ribbon cuttings has Corbin had this year? Simple question, but haven't gotten a reply yet. Does anyone know the number?
Someone on this thread spoke about the Chamber and Eco. Dev. being different groups. If that is so, then why are they buying a trailer on Carpenter's word.
Will Tom Blair or Lynn Tipton be in the trailer when they use it, I doubt it. Wonder who will.

The Chamber makes itself look bad because a few people run your organization. Whether you are Republican or Democrat you should have been upset when one of the candidates for Governor was snubbed. You should have spoken up and said that both political party's candidates should be afforded the same courtesy, respect, and fairness during an election. Having the Republican candidates for Governor and Attorney General address the Chamber for the purpose of giving a political speech in an election year and snubbing the candidate who is now Governor was a major mistake. But that's the way Corbin's Chamber operates. It is a club for the few who take money from the many good business people who are the ones who provide the jobs for people in this area.
Every time a company moves out of Corbin or closes in Corbin the Chamber of Commerce members and leaders should be concerned. They should ask Why? Why? What was done to try to keep it from happening?
The Chamber should be arm and arm with Economic Development in trying to get businesses to expand or come into our city. But it should not be under the control of the Economic Development Director. It is supposed to be an action group. Some of you should attend Chamber meetings in other cities and see how energetic the Chamber is in trying to help their community grow and prosper. I know there are some excellent members in the Chamber. Many work hard to help our community. But stand on your own feet and don't let a few bosses run the show.
Now we begin to see the real purpose of your criticism. Put the Chamber down because things didn't go your way with the art project. The Main Street amigos need to drop this.
You are right. The same little cluster of amigos are doing all of this.
They even have their own booth. It is not good for the town.

Darn it, you are right! And it's not just Vangent either. They should be searching their sould anytime ANY business closes or leaves.
Why didn't they ask questions when Joy gas station closed? Why didn't the mayor or commission do something when Hunan went out of business? Why oh why couldn't Carpenter offer incentives to the Gaming Castle to keep them here? If we lose the pet store that's there now, that is tax money the city won't get and workers who won't be able to put food on the table.
The economic development director needs to get off his lazy butt and start offering incentives to places like Johnny's Mighty Muffler, Hardees and the downtown dry cleaners. I'm sick of this "it's no big deal" attitude. The B team needs to go.

I'm sick of this "it's no big deal" attitude. The B team needs to go. This is a big joke to you. It is not a big joke to people who lose their jobs. It is not funny to children who come home and find out their mom or dad lost his or her job. It isn't just nonsense to a young married couple who can't find a way to raise a family here in our area and who will have to move somewhere else to seek opportunity.
When many people will have little under their Christmas tree this year, and they worry about making it through another month just sit there and make jokes about it. It takes pain and effort to do things right. It takes determination for a community to seek to be a top quality place to live. And that is no joke.
Unfortunatley Carpenter and Company could not keep The Mighty Muffler Shop or Bobby's Pizza from leaveing. I would say now that they have the Weenie Mobile they should be able to sway many more Business's to join the chamber and not bolt to London.
There could be an avalanche of business locating here now with a certified Weenie Mobile, we have the Talent and certainly the drive to catch London, Lexington & Knoxville in recruiting the top companies in the world.
It may be wise to have another couple of Weenie Mobile's ready at the Weenie Factory as this shear Tidal Wave of Business Approaches.
We also have secret plans to build a exact replica of the Oscar Meyer Weenie Mobile, I'm sure we are in heated negotiations for the rights to this as soon as possible.
As soon as that last Leg Of Lamp is finished at the Buffet and that last Tall Boy is drank our hero's will be hard at work to make this plan a Masterpiece!!!
Go forth I say to the Dynamic Duo and make this area a Model for Business.
