I noticed today in the News Journal, that your website made the paper. Congratulations !!!!
Mr. Knuckles commented "neutrally" about your site in my opinion, but toward the end of his commentary, he compliments the issue of "local people aren't totally dead" when it comes to local issues and people getting involved in them. Whether the comments are good or bad, he and the paper he works for has now given you credibility and publicity. Now, folks like myself, has found out about your site and thoroughly enjoy it. I had not heard about it before today, and now I'm a big fan.
I'm sure he's participated on message board forum's before, and I wonder if he has always used his real name in the user name box. And, if he's always published his personal email address on the user profile sections of those message forums. Not his business email address, his personal web address. I don't know, I'm just asking. If he has, that's great.
I enjoy reading his editorials, and read them every week, along with the editors post and Mr. White as well. They have some good insights and provide very useful and accurate information. However, they have the forum of their newspaper at their disposal every week.
I'm sure they'll comment on your site more and more often, as the posts and topics get better and better.
HAT'S OFF to the News Journal publisher/Editor for giving us the real facts in his commentary. This is a Breath of Fresh air compared to the phony-bologny of the other paper.
THUMB"S UP to one specific News Journal writer who gives us more detail on the debt of whitley county. This was a better article, and with the tenure of this specifice reporter, he can even gives us more info on why specifically why the county went into debt 10-18 MILLION. This would be a great article. the people I talk to want to know How we got there in such a short time?????
SOUR GRAPES to the other News Journal Reporter on his comments about Free Speech and Responsible Speech. He claims he tried convince the owner of this site about the idea of FORCING PEOPLE into posting there names on this site. I think this comment was Distasteful and ugly. We do not live in Russia do we? As far as I know Bob Terrel Jr website is not under the Guidelines of this specific Reporter is he???? This Reporter also claimed people who post anonymously on this website want to Cower in the shadows while hunching over their keyboards. This is nothing but a CHEAP SHOT. Then why were you reading articles on this website????? You just ratted on yourself. You made the headline!! People who post may want to give their opinions without any fingerpointing or backstabbing. This gives more ideas on how more people feel in our community. It sounds likes this Reporter wants it his way or no way. This shows in my opinion the Journalistic Imaturity on his part.
This is the same Reporter who in my opinion made a distateful comment about a local Church. For example, he made a comment about a local Church changing their name and it sounded like to him it was a nickname. I felt this was a CHEAP SHOT as well. Is this any of his buisness what this congregation and its Pastor want to do???? Is this Real and Beneficial News to the public taking shots at Local Churches and Website Owners??? Practice your own headline on Responsible Speech!! Talk specifics pal on why you are paying a 1% payroll TAX. Talk specifics on why you and I are paying a $2.00 911 Tax instead of .95Cents. This New Journal Reporter is better than this . I always give people second chances before tuning them out. Neutral in my opinion is far from the Facts. SOUR GRAPES---PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH!!!!!

I appreciate your comments and your defense of the website and free speech, but I think you might have taken Mr. Knuckle’s comments in the wrong context. Trent never tried to convince me to force people to post their names, he just asked me my thoughts about it, as have several other people. There are many people who wish they knew the names behind the comments, but with most of these posts, it really doesn't matter - you either agree with the post or you don't, and the silly comments some people post hurt their cause and make themselves look bad anyway. Trent also knows that while there are some silly anonymous posts, there are some very positive and informative postings that don't necessarily need a name to it. It is practically impossible to require a real name anyway - someone can easily make up a fictitious name. At the end of his story Trent states that "it's just heartening to know that people aren't totally dead when it comes to local issues." I didn't take his story in a negative way, and I appreciate his honest opinion, as I do yours.

The way I read it in the newspaper. "I've asked the Website owner about the idea of forcing people to identify themselves when they post." This is the way it was stated in the Paper. I did not like the idea myself of forcing any individual in this community to do anything, website owner or whoever. Maybe he should have used different terminolgy in his article and I would have taken it different. I do not know the whole conversation between you folks only what I read in the News Journal. I hope you see my point on his statement. Like I said, I think this reporter is better than this.. My suggestion, when writing think about how it will sound to others.!!!!
It's good to see this website recognized in the News Journal. It is the best website in this region, and it's good to have a forum for people to share ideas. Keep up the good work and let's be sure our leaders know we are interested in making our area better for all the people.
One thing I would like to see though. And that is for the folks that post here to at least use a "user name", such as mine. This way, we, all that read here, will know who is posting at least in context. I'm sure many of the posts made in regard to replying to my posts, were from the same person. Or so I think it is anyway.
You could even pick out somethig that is totally neutral to your thoughts or feelings or issues. Call yourself "fireplug", "moonbow", "chainguard", or "golf tee" to name a few.
I think you'll like it if you have at least an identity on this board.
Just put the name you wish in the first name block on your user profile.
Your website deserves a lot of credit in helping people have an opportunity to express their beliefs. We need to let others know about this forum and get the people in this area to come alive and let their views be known.
Has one of the Local Newspapers turned into a Campaign Headquarter for Gov. Fletcher, and Bill Nighbert as his Cheerleader for the area? In my opinion, Just seems like every time I'm Getting a certain paper once a week, Nighbert has appeared like he is singing praises of How Great Thou Art for Fletcher. Maybe this needs to be another thread started about why you think Nighbert is all of a sudden appearing evry week in this paper. Just getting tired of seeing some of these certain individuals getting Jobs or being appointed by Gov. Fletcher when Whitley County was sunk into a massive 18 million Dollar debt. TOO OBVIOUS!!!
Mr. Nighbert was mayor of Williamsburg, so you can't pin Whitley County's debt on him. He is also a local figure, of course the paper would report when he comes to town. As far as his son is concerned, he better thank his lucky stars he didn't kill anyone. I hope they throw the book at him.
It would be interesting to know who was involved in making money off the land for the jail, the land for the Post Office, the land for the Water Park, and for the Airport. Mr. Nighbert was Mayor of Williamsburg but he is now the Czar of Whitley County.
Referring also to mike Patrick, Burley Foley who either have been appointed to local judge or been given jobs by the fletcher Admin team. Did Burley Foley and Patrick have a hand in Whitley's DEBT???? Did Nighbert have a hand in getting Patrick his Job???? Doesn't Patrick Work in the Transportation area? So you see these are the same guys that either bailed out on WHitley Countians,I QUIT, or were appointed directly by Fletcher to County Judge after having a hand in wrecking Whitley County's Budget. Why are these grand Reports By Nighbert now only appearing? Is he now a Full time volunteer Commentary writer for one of the local Newspapers or do you think he is trying to get his Boss some free Publicity for the upcoming election? Or, do you think that nighbert could be running as a Lieut. Gov with Fletcher? What is your opinion? JUST WONDERING!!!!!
I thought Fletcher had already picked a running mate, but in Frankfort the rumor is that Nighbert will be his running mate. Of course, Nighbert owes Fletcher a great deal because Big Daddy pardoned him. And Whitley County's Republicans are Fletcher's strongest supporters. Anytime they need a bag full of money the Fletcher group comes to several families in Whitley. When Fletcher loses this spring in the primary or this fall in the November final election there will be some Whitley County politicians heading home. Mr. Patrick won't have to come home becaise he works out of his house, as an earlier post mentioned.
The Fletcher mess is exactly why the legislature is discussing limiting the pardoning powers of the governor.
I think Fletcher is "one and done". He burnt his bridges, and is standing on the bank, wondering how he'll get back.
On the other hand, he only did the same thing the dem governors have done for years, except there were to many democrat employees waiting to blow the whistle on him when he did what all the others have done.
The locals he hired, hope they enjoy it now, while they can. I wonder what they'll do when they come home.
My view on it is that Mike Patrick is a good man who didn't have the nerve to stand up to the jailer. Burley was only one cog in the broken wheel, and I think he's done as good as anyone could to fix the problem. I don't know if Nighbert helped Patrick get his job or not, but I am thankful that FINALLY some state money is finding it's way to us. We've been ignored for far too long. I'm sure Nighbert is trying to get some publicity for his boss because that's the way it works. You use what resources you have to get your message out when you are running for office, and incumbents always have a leg up because they get more press. My opinion is that I also believe Fletcher has picked his running mate, but I can't remember who it is. Is it Robbie Robinson, or Richie Robertson, or something like that? I've finally picked a handle... Morning Glory
One local hardcore politician described it this way to me.
Whitley County is a republican island in a sea of democrats, county wise.
That's why we're seeing some state money come this way.
Our county was instrumental in his election victory.
It started when, I believe it was Wilkinson, convinced the locals to put the off track betting parlor here, as a test, and promised to give corbin the road money for all the new roads if we took it.
Remember that. Off track opened up, and amazingly, here comes millions for the main/kentucky street project, the industrial by pass, the railroad bridge, 18th street widening, 18th street extension.
I have heard that Fletcher and Bush are going to start a consulting company after their terms, and are working on their first book "How to Win a Political Election When You Don't Even Have the Qualifications to Run a Used Car Lot" for Dummies
If they are such great folk's and as you claim and did the best that they could, (Foley,Patrick,) then I guess the MILLION DOLLAR question to you is why Did they put Whitley County in over 18 Million Dollars in DEBT in as little as five years, also put a %1 percent payroll Tax on Whitley Countians, Stick a (911 Tax 2.00) from .95c. Do you think this is good management? Don't have anything to do with JERRY. You can't blame Jerry for Mike Patrick quitting the job he was Elected to fullfill. Then running to Fletcher for Employment. How can anyone say that Foley did the best he could to Fix the problems. In my opinion, you do not understand how County Government works!! That is why that individuals like this keep getting elected and we keep paying more taxes because of their mismanagement. Do you not understand that Foley was a Magistrate, voting and and discussing County financial Buisness with the other magistrates and Patrick-Judge Exec at the time. These Decisions they made, affected our County for many years and has also led to hardships on our citizens such as more taxes out of our paychecks.I blame the Local Newspapers for your unrealistic opinion. You only have heard recently how Foley had done such a great Job as a Mr. Fix it type of Judge. You need to look back 5-7 years and do some research on why the Debt was accumulated in such a short time. Remember, Foley has been Magistrate, voting member of the FISCAL COURT for the past 12 years. Why do you think Patrick just up and quit the job the voters elected him to Do? Sounds like the captain jumped off the ship before it SANK!!! In my opinion, Gov. Fletcher then comes in to Whitley County and appoints the guy that was part of creating the Biggest financial mess in Whitley Co. History and appoints him to County Judge. These are the type so called of buisness leaders we do not need. This is why I will be switching over in my voting if this guy is elected by his party in the primary.
You hit the nail on the head, we elected them. Not all, some voted for others. But, they were elected. It was said somewhere on this site, this area is notorious for electing based on knowing who the person is, not what they can do or have done.
Who wants to run for office around here. Not many. Oh sure, there are many that run for office, particularly magistrate, jailer, and sheriff. Thank goodness most only get their family votes.
So, previous poster, what is your answer. I'm not being sarcastic. Would YOU run for office?
Foley is out. He seen the writing on the wall. Will he try again? Maybe, if he thinks he can swing it. Easiest money he's ever made I'd say.
He was in three terms wasn't he. Or was it 2.
Will he get a state retirement program for that?
Voter apathy is the problem. Not just here, everywhere.
How far in debt did the county go when that jail was closed? Do you remember why it was closed? Gross mismanagement and flat out lawlessness on the part of Jerry Taylor. I can understand you having hard feelings toward Patrick and Foley, they definitely share the blame, but to say this problem doesn't have anything to do with JERRY? Please. And since you obviously have such extensive knowledge on how to run the county, put your name on the ballot. You obviously have the best interests of our citizens at heart. Good luck.
The Jail went in Debt, while shut down, according to News records only 400,00 dollars, not 18 million dollars. where did the other 17.5 million come from. It wasn't from Jerry taylor. I agree, Taylor was bad buisness for whitley county. I do not have hard feelings toward foley or Patrick. I do not agree with their management of the County's finances. The Fiscal Court went along with taylor to build his new jail when they did not have a clue on how to pay for it, that is the bottom line. Renovations to the old jail may have been more appropriate until they had a bettter plan. You need to ask yourself, why do you pay a 1% payrolll Tax? Why do you pay an inflated 911 tax of $2.00.? Then do some research and find if Jerry was responsible Or Mike Or Burley. Mike or Burley have never told you the public , what specific buisness decisions they made that led to the 18 million in Debt have they. My advice to you is , call Mike or Burley and ask them why they went into so much debt and report back to us so we can rush deliver it to the local newspapers. WISE UP!!!
Jerry is Responsible for part of this, 400K. But Jerry was the Jailer not a Magistrate or The Judge Executive, those folks who were in at the Time got us in another 17 Million Dollars worth of Debt, the Fiscal Court manages the Money, not the Sherrif, Jailer, PVA ETC-------------Why??-----How
The Poster is right!!!!!!!!!!!! Wise up for goodness sakes
That's what I'm trying to do, by reading these posts. I appreciate your information, although I would have really appreciated it if it was given in a less condescending tone. :smile
