If they have nothing to hide, then there shouldn't be a problem with turning over the requested documents immediately. The comments about sensitive confidential negotiations with vendors and bands is a bunch of baloney - the is NIBROC, not Woodstock, Live Aid or The Grammy Awards.
Seems to be a theme with some of these boards. There are some board members who are good people and are on these boards for the right reasons, and there are other individuals who are on them simply for some sort of ego trip or for self gain, either for their business of for themselves.
Bottom line, if you are unable to make decisions for the Chamber, Tourism, Economic Development or any other board based on what is best for the city and the people and businesses, then resign your position on these boards - it is that simple. Also, if you are one of the good people on these boards who wants what is right, have some guts and stand up for what is right, because these bad seeds and decisions are dragging your name and reputation, as well as the entire group down.
The Chamber of Commerce should be run by local business leaders to assure the community has a good relationship with those persons and companies who have invested their money and energy to create jobs for our people and to provide good service and quality. By effectively accomplishing those tasks the owners and stockholders will make a reasonable return.
Corbin's Chamber has a President who works for the Recreation Department of the city. He is not a member of the business community. He is the handpicked choice of the Executive Director of Economic Development and the Chamber. How many of our major manufacturers/leaders are on the Chamber Board? Some of our key business leaders would make excellent officers in the Chamber. The chamber asks for money from Tourism to support NIBROC, but they don't want to provide the Tourism Commission any information about it. The person who hired Corbin's Economic Development Director is a partner in the CPA firm that audits the secret finances of the Chamber of Commerce.
There is one group in Corbin and the county that has tennacles like an octopus that are spread into control of just about everthing. Is this what we want in our community and area?
Would it be a bad show to print here the names of the chamber of commerce board members. I don't know this message boards policy on that type of thing. If not here, maybe the local papers can publish the total board's members. I would like to know.
One way to get things done, is to poll the members. So, that said, if you know of a member of the chamber, let them know what is going on. If you don't like it, terminate your membership. If you cut off the head, the body will die. Cut off the cash and membership, and the board will be out of a job.
This thing will get bigger and bigger the more we ask questions, and I hope the papers keep up their vigil. This issue has the same smell to it that the old hospital deal had.
To the Chamber of Commerce Board Members, it's not what you do, or are doing, or what you aren't doing, it's what it appears you are or aren't doing. Perception is 99% of anything. If we percieve you're hiding something, or doing something illegal, or protecting someone, then you are. As a public board, you are accountable to us, not us to you.

YES--------THE ABOVE IS RIGHT ON TARGET, A VERY GOOD SUMMARY. THE RECREATION DIRECTOR HAS ZERO EXPERIENCE IN BUSINESS, LIMITED EDUCATION? WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THE CHAMBER THINKING???? FOR GOODNESS SAKES FOLKS WHO IN THE WORLD DO YOU THINK HAS TO MEET AND GREET POSSIBLE NEW BUSINESS???
WE HAVE SOME OF THE TOP FOLKS IN THE WORLD WHO WORK WITH SOME TOP COMPANIES IN THE NATION, WHERE ARE THEY????????
I RECENTLY TALKED WITH A POSSIBLE NEW COMPANY CEO WHO SENT A REP IN TO THE AREA TO INVESTIGATE AND FEEL AROUND TO WHAT THE POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITIES WERE WITHIN THE AREA, WHEN HE MEET THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT HE QUICKLY CALLED AND SAID HE WAS HEADED NORTH TO LONDON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THUMBS UP! this week to the News Journal reporter who In my opinion Exposed the Little Secrets the Chamber of Commerce does NOT want the folks of Corbin to Know. This is a Better article from him. This is the kind worthwhile News the people of this area need to be informed of. This Reporter needs to keep digging until he uncovers their Hidden Secrets they have Buried. Someone is using Smokescreens on the Figures! Sorry You were locked out from access to the Restrooms, better luck next time.
The Chamber has screwed up the office resources at the Depot. Because they hate the Tourism Commission they blocked off their office with book shelves and you cannot go from the Chamber/Economic Development part of the building to the Tourism part of the building.
The big office Mr. C. had built for himself when he came aboard has now been turned into a conference room, and if they just worked with the Tourism Commission in a cooperative way they could use the much nicer conference rooms in the south end of the Depot.
I used to enjoy going to the Depot and feeling the spirit of teamwork and cooperation that existed. That all changed a year ago.
There are some excellent companies in our area that are owned by people or stockholders in other states. They have some very experienced executives in our area. Are any of these business leaders of our manufacturing, distribution, technology, medical, and education groups on our Chamber Board?
I truly don't know who all the members are of all the boards, Chamber, Tourism, Recreation, Optomist, Rotary, Jaycees, Lions, etc.
Any takers on posting those board's official members! Is that authorized on this site. After all, they are on public boards, be they public or not, for profit or non-profit.
Let's see if we can find out who they are.
Mr. Administrator, is this authorized, to print the names of these local boards on this site.
I agree with everyone! The people in leadership at the. Chamber have dropped the ball on many issues, especially in promoting this area to the industrial world. As I see it, Corbin is nothing more than a product. A product that has features that many other communities can't offer. Just as Bob Terrell has stated many times, our location is within a days drive of over half of the entire nations population. We have major rail service. We are on I-75 midway between between Knoxville, TN and Lexington, KY. Don't forget Hwy 25-E. That corridor carries a traffic volumn of nearly 30,000 vehicles a day and opens this area up to those from both of the Carolinas, eastern Tenneesee and part of Virginia to Corbin, not London.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's about time that "THE CHAMBER" gets off it's ass and hires a salesperson to sell this potentially explosive product. The Chambers pet "NIBROC " will never bring progress, but will continue to drain money. Use that concert dollar and get a salesperson.
The Chamber of Commerce is controlled by a few people who have the ambition to control everything about our community. Hurrah for Trent Knuckles! It is time we got off our butts and let them know we expect a team effort among all the groups who lead our community. It is ridiculous that the Depot has been split into two sections and the Chamber/Economic Development group put up book shelves and other furniture to block off the two sections of the building. That sure sends a lousy message to people who visit our area. It used to be a friendly place with people working together and now it is a place of intimidation.

Nice Quote We have Mr. Sams as the President of the Chamber, what more do you want???????????????????????????????
According to Nibroc Fan this guys is a "Real Good One"???????????????????????????????????????????????
To the previous poster, it sounds as though you have a personal issue with Mr. Sams, and anyone that brings up a conversation about him. You need to get past that. Why don't you tell us in detail what is bothering you about that. Specifically!!!! Whether its the job as chamber president, or the rec director, or both.
And, while you're at it, give us a name to go by, even if it's in the body of your posts. Just put XXX at the bottom or something. Better yet, adjust your profile and give yourself a user name.
Also, my comments on his positive side was with regard to his job as recreation director, not the chamber of commerce.
And, when you use curse words, even the small one like you used previously, people tend to overlook your comments.
A comment came up on another thread from this column. The thread is discussing property owners being annexed into the city limits. In the thread, the issue of "out of the city" persons being on "in the city" boards and committees. Specifically the Chamber of Commerce. The poster had some good points as to why we should NOT have out of the city persons sitting on this board.
As I read and thought about it, I have to agree with them. In all the fiasco at the Chamber, the person causing much of the stink over the money issues and other previous issues, doesn't live in the city limits. So, if there was a policy concerning residency, that person would be out. As would I believe, another person that lives in another town.
Of course, it's a shame it's come to this, but again, based on what we've read in the paper, they brought it on themselves (the chamber) over money issues. Imagine if they had been up front about it all.
How do they choose directors of the Chamber of Commerce? Do members get to nominate members for consideration and all the Chamber members get to vote on the ones who will serve? I keep hearing people say the Dicector of the Chamber is the Czar of the Chamber and calls all the shots. How did a City employee get to be Chairman? Who picked that person?
The Chamber of Commerce would be helpful if they would respond to some of the questions many people have on this forum. When you just stonewall things it doesn't clarify issues and give the Chamber an opportunity to provide good information to people.
It seems like they do business in an isolated way.
Some people or boards dcn't want to hear any other opinions and just don't know how to communicate effectively. The Chamber should consider having a town hall meeting sometime and share information and gain ideas from their members.
