This city commission is one of the most progreesive commissions we have had since the last Thurston commission when the overpasswas built. Thurston had guts and so does Farris and company.
This Board is an excellent venue to aire complaints of the Boards and also to deliver praise when warranted. Right now the City Counsel and T0urism Board are on a roll. Good job guys and gals.
I agree with McBurney and a couple of commissioners doing a good job, but what has the Tourism Board accomplished sine they derailed the Train project that most of the town wanted?
drop the train idea for the time being. It might be a good thing latter, but not now. 26000 dollars is too much to spend on such a project. The Tourism commission did a good job saving our money from such a project.
I agree, lets drop the Train Project as it added too much Value to the city and would have helped market us a little better. The 26K will be needed to fix a Water Leak at the Gordon Hill Civic center that should have been figured out 3 Months ago.
While Estep is developing Magic Tricks in Pigeon Forge and crying about this Web Site the Civic Center on Gordon Hill had a massive plumming problem and went un-noticed.
No problem, we only lost about 500,000 Gallons of City Water.
Today's News Journal just set things off again. Now we remember the lousy comments the Tourism Chairman has made about our Downtown Program. All he and the lady who wrote the letter did was to make us realize even more that www.corbinkentucky.us is a great website.
And today in his editorial he said, "he hopes everything will stay the same way forever." What about the people who don't have jobs? What about the people who don't have medical insurance? What about our brave men and women fighting, dying, and being bloodied in the War? What about the family members of our troops who are frightened and worried they will get the sad message about the harm to their loved ones? That was the most ridiculous editorial I have ever read. People told me last year that your newspaper did not endorse candidates in elections, even if it was a Corbin area person running for office. Where is the truth in this newspaper? Now that we the people have this website to use, they can't pull the wool over our eyes.
The train project needed derailing. that's one the tourism did that was good.
They are the Tourism Board. They are supposed to find projects to promote tourism. The train project would have brought tourists to downtown. Believe it or not, this is the kind of thing travelers look for when they're passing through an area. Right now, they are led off the north exit of I-75 to see our greatest attraction, KFC, and then leave right back the way they came, never spending a dime in Corbin or Whitley County. Also, there is plenty of money in the budget for this project and no good reason to take it out (unless you think politics is a good reason).
Where would you put these trains? The town can't even keep pumkins from the high school kids stealing them and also street signs. How do you think these trains would do. Give us some suggestions on where they would go and how you could keep people from stealing them.
Here are some projects I came across online. Other towns find tourism opportunities with their history, even with squirrels. This would have been a 1 1/2 year long art project. If our downtown is "Too Ugly" as Estep put it, and he "doesn't want tourists in downtown Corbin" as he stated (strange comment from a Tourism Board Director), then where is the plan to clean it up?
The Train Project beats Estep's Giant KFC Bucket project, maybe we would have put the train's in the same place Estep was going to put the 10 Ft Chicken Buckets??
We have a Tourism Board, you give me some suggestions other than the Giant Chicken Buckets, what is the tourism plan. Maybe they can publish it here on this Web-Site along with their Budget??
That's a good place to start, let's see their Budget first, suggestion & improvement plan, then we can all have a say.
Guessing the trains are about the same size, footprint wise, as the horse in front of tri county bank, I suggest this.
The first one would go in the traffic island at either the railroad overpass or the other traffic island up by Harris Wheel alignment. Mount them on a concrete base. The second would go in the open traffic island.
Then I would begin approaching property owners as to if they would allow some or part of a train to be placed on their property. Just ask first, don't commit yet.
Nibroc park is a good place of course. The sidewalk in front of Gibsons music is large enough.
I would approach the property owner of the large lot next to the Beanery, and try to put one there in the corner of 6th and main.
City Hall of course, and the City Utilities property.
I think Robert Brown would love one in front of his law office, in the old Brown Chevrolet lot. Robert and Penny are very proactive in corbin activities.
The Whitaker Bank corner, where you turn in to go up by the Times tribune would be good, they are big community supporters.
I'd approach Central Baptist about putting one in their parking lot there on the corner of main and 5th. Surely they would give up a few square feet.
And, I'd mount the trains on 1/2" steel plate, painted of course, and then use drive anchors to anchor them to the concrete. Then, I'd spot weld all the bolt heads so no one could easily just take the bolts out and be off with them. (I hear they're pretty heavy though).

There's more, but I'll let someone else talk now.
Thanks for the opportunity to speak, I'm sure several of these folks appreciate you dropping their names. Maybe you will have time to answer all of your own Questions after you fix the water leak up at the Civic Center and recover the 300,000 Gallons we lost and paid for. The next course of action may be to try and fit the trains around Esteps Chicken Buckets hanging from the street lights.
Of Course no one knows what his Estep's Budget is so any thought you have is purely speculation, unless you have the Budget and we all can take a look and see what funds are going where.
We do know the Train Project was a suggestion from Mrs. Myers, you remember the person the City hired to do this kind of work. As far as approaching all of the folks you have just named, that's what Mrs. Myers is job was suppose to be all about, bringing in the Business Folks, Home Owners from the Corbin area and coming up with a Plan.
I believe she did that but our Hero and Tourism Chairman shot everything down, if your offering to take Mrs. Myers place then let us all know your name, put your resume out here (Just Copy & Paste it on this web-site) and we'll see what the mayor and city commision say.
I'm sure they will consider it as Mrs Myers will probably get as far away from Estep and his Wild West Show as quick as she possibly can, so we look forward to reviewing your Resume and Business Talents for Improveing & Marketing the city that you Obviously have.
I'm not sure what your problem is with this person's post, I think they just wanted to express their opinion and ideas, just like you have. I don't know who you think posted it, but I think the sarcasm is way off the mark. I think if Ms. Myers read the previous post she would appreciate the time someone took to offer their support. Estep's goofyness and your opinion of him shouldn't carry over to legitamate opinions and comments. I agree with part of your words, but the sarcasm deminishes your comments, and I don't think you need to take it out on that poster. Take it out on the right people.
Have you noticed the poster two before can't get his finger off the shift button and capitalizes some of the oddest words in his paragraphs. Of course, that's good, because we know it's the same person posting all over the board. It's strange how he (it could be a she) can only come up with negative, and like the previous person said, sarcastic comments about anyone or any topic. He's yet to offer any type of suggestion of how to try and fix or solve any problem, in any thread here. He actually has nothing to say.
I've spoken with Mrs. Meyers many times, and she says she'll take all the help she can get. Her and her husband worked the nibroc tent for her department by themselves almost all weekend.
Maybe that person 3 posts up should call her and offer his time to help. He seems to know a lot about everything.

There are many pro-active comments on the Improvement Thread Bob T, Posted. Lot's of very good suggestions, I have yet to see anyone from the Tourism or Economic development board respond, what do they think, there on the boards?
I don't think they'll ever respond for several reasons. The foremost being neither Estep or Carpenter is professional enough nor do they care about the people they serve to answer questions. The professionalism and openness of Ms. Swindler and Les Dixon made their replies very much appreciated. They didn't point fingers or give blame. I doubt either of the other two could do that.
One, they'll be giving credibility to this board, which they do not want to do. They are afraid of this forum.
Two, if they respond, and sign their name, they'll be opening themselves up to questions, suggestions, and issues they don't want to address.
Also, they know they'll be held accountable for their answers or comments, no matter what they are.
I looked at the tourism web site corbinkytourism.com, and I dont know what he's whining about. Its a great website for our area, and much better most other cities sites I've come across. I remember Estep writing about it in his paper months back, and was bragging about it. I've had similar experiences with him, you're his best friend one day, then out of the blue he hates you.
