HAT's OFF to the President of the Tourism Board.Why? He has made a point to inform the public what specifics are going on with their projects and the time of their meetings. This helps to inform the public where the Money is being spent, proposals, and the Cooperation with the other Local Boards. This will Help the Town have a better image and successfull events for the Future. He has stepped up coverage in the Local Newspaper he is employed with. I hope all Board members find common ground and work together for the improvement of the City of Corbin. Keep up the info on the meetings, I find it interesting to know what's going on.

Well Well

It Looks as the Outside the City Limits gang has struck again, as of today the Local News media reports that Funding requested by our new City Improvement Employee has been voted down.

Now let's look at who according to the paper voted against what our paid Consultant (City Employee) has told us to do:

Curry, Tipton, Estep, Patil ALL live outside the city Limits, that's right folks. Now who voted in Favor of Funding the Improvements? Shelton, S. McBurney & Razmus, Guess where they all live? Correct again, Inside the city Limits.

Scroll back and review the debates on this web site over this very issue, the predictions all came true, once again folks who live outside the city limits where their homes get no benefit to Improveing the city are voting against Improvements.

Why Hire an employee to help Improve the City when folks who live outside the City and get no benefit control the Purse strings???????????

I agree with the previous poster. It is ashamed that this funding to help improve the the city of Corbin was Gunned down by "The Outside The City Limits Gang" headed up by Don Estep who does not reside in the City Limits himself.

The City Commission needs to examine all of these Boards and replace these folks with local Residents who care about the future improvements of Our Great city.

From reports out of todays local News media, it sounded like a very Ugly seen took place at the Tourism meeting with Estep casting the final stone. On one hand, the Chamber can vote to hand out thousands of dollars to Trash act like Joan Jett for Nibroc, but the "outside the City Limits Gang" can't vote to give money to improve our Downtown. What ashamed this is to Our Community! Sour Grapes!!!

I understand the two commissioners who behind the scene are opposed to the downtown project are the two who don't want anyone from outside the city to be on any boards. In my opiniion the Tourism Commission made a serious mistake. There are many people working hard to improve our community and the first major recommendation they make is rejected. The Chairman of the Tourism Commission has not treated Sharea Myers with any respect and he wants to have total control of everything that happens.

This was a sad day for Downtown Corbin and two of our City Commissioners seem to also want to micromanage and present obstacles to improving our community. Don't declare war on people who don't live in the City. Instead of running off the people who don't live in the city, give them reasons to agree to be annexed. Corbin won't grow and prosper if that attitude exists.

I do agree a little with the last Poster as Mr. Estep has been very disrespectful to Mrs Myers.

Unfortunatley as predicted on this very site the "The Out Of The City Limits Gang" shot down this Improvement project, very strange that the folks who live in the city all voted yes and the ones Outside to a tee voted NO??????

But again that was predicted and debated on this very Web Site. I recently read where Mr. Estep in his Newspaper column blasted the city of London for trying to take Business from Corbin? It looks as if he is just as bad by Casting the last Stone and Dooming a small 13K Payment to let Mrs Myers get started and Improve our own city!

The City Commission should move quickly to remove some of these folks, in lieu of Millions of dollars of Project Money floating around we can not approve two payments of 13K each???

And By the way, that Garage Door on mainstreet Should get a 90 day notice to Improve or pack your Bags and move on, that's a disgrace!!!

Looks like the The main shooter for the "Outside the City Limits Gang", Don Estep is trying to squirm his way out of a so called Gun Fight at the last Tourism meeting.

Estep is telling folks in his Newspaper Column not to be Misled????
Wow Don!!! Who is trying to mislead Who? You Voted No! You fired the last shot that sent funding to improve our City flat to the Floor.

Bruce Farris is right on the money when he says there needs to be more folks from here in the City on these Boards.Don Estep does not live in the City Limits of Corbin. Handling Tax payer money, these folks are making decisions and don't even live in the City.These people are not Elected officials, or most live outside the City limits themselves. But they are making the important decisions with your Tax dollars and now, not allocating money to improve our downtown.

What kind of City Commission do we have to allow these non city residents to make such final decisions? Do the elected officials not have any Bacbone to stand up for the people they were elected By?" The Outside the City Limits Gang" Can't even vote for ya!!!!

The Last poster is correct "The Outside The City Limits Gang" do not pay any personell Tax's on their homes, cars, boats. Nothing to the City but yet they Gun down Improvements that would make OUR Homes more Valuable.

Mr. Farris is right folks, Let's find out who is serving on what Board, create NEW Criteria and stop this from happening in the future. No kind of Tax Money as we have debated here many times should be directly handled by Boards whose members live outside the city.

Most other cities have this same criteria, just creates tooooo much of a conflict of Interest. The Elected officials of the people should be in charge of ALL Funding within the city Limits.

I doubt that this is true. Ask members of the tourism board if any City Commissioners approached them about their budget items. The comment sounds like sour grapes from someone who has as axe to grind. It was most likely made by someone who does not vote in the City or pay City tax on their home. The truth is that Corbin has a good Mayor and four good Commissioners. Together those five men put out a lot of little fires that pop up in City government. I am sure that all of them want the best for Corbin and the area surrounding Corbin. There are many good folks that live outside the City limits. It is their choice to live there. That is OK. But do not forget that the Mayor and Commissioners represent the voters of Corbin.

Who is running the Buisness of our city? Four individuals who do Not reside in the city limits
and are not elected officials, made the decision to stop improvements to our downtown projects.

To the previous poster, did the mayor and commissioners represent the people of Corbin on this issue? They are allowing a bunch of non-city residents to make decisions for them.

Sounds like to me that Don Estep played the role of the mayor and the rest voted like they were commissioners. The real mayor and commissioners need to take control and get some backbone and know whats going on for a change, and not allow these folks to run Corbin's future out the door!!!!

The same two Commissioners who have been the hardest on Charea Myers and the same two commissioners who don't want anyone from outside the city to serve on any boards or commissions.

The city of Corbin should not build a wall around the city to make it appear that those people who live around Corbin have no value or worth to Corbin. Corbin will be surpassed in population by London when the census of 2010 is taken.

Corbin is a great community but the economic health of Corbin depends greatly on people from outside the city limits. Corbin needs to attract people to be annexed into the city. Many want to be annexed but there has never been a first class presentation made to show the people the advantages, which are plenty. In Berlin they built a wall to keep people from being able to visit and do business with each other. Corbin should be want help and cooperation from anyone who can help them.

The Last Poster is right on the money, you have to build infrastructure from within, very few County or city governements would let this go on, this is very similar to what happened in the last mayors race as one of the candidates eventually dropped out because he was a non resident.

This is a problem as old as time itself with folks trying to disperse money, run the show, be a some type of Major Player but yet pay NO CITY Taxes at all on their personal property (Which the city desperatley needs!) and try to slow the Improvement of City Infrastructure & Marketability.

Mrs Myers should have a Pre-Set Budget, surely she wasn't hired without one in place. Second, if Mr Estep was worried about Improvements being made before the 13K payments was awarded then at least 90 days ago he and the Board should have presented a Milestones report (Mr. Estep may want to Publish his Plan in his next Column?) of what needs to be done and when it needs to be done before they will Fund these projects.

The Main Street boards are loaded with people who do not live in the City. It is one thing to listen to the suggestions of people who cloose not to live within the City limits but it is another to let them be in a management role by serving on the boards and committees. This is not good stewardship by the City leaders to the voters of Corbin.

As a person who has some ownership in a business in Corbin, and owns two real estate locations in Corbin I hope we don't get a closed mind in gaining help and participation from people who live outside the city limits of Corbin. My residence is not in Corbin but over the years I have given considerable gifts and donations to various organizations in Corbin, Knox and Whitley Counties.

The first test in appointing people to serve on Boards or commissions is to select capable people who care about our area. It is a mistake to pick people who are more interested in their own personal power and interests, whether they live in Corbin or outside Corbin.

If the right people are selected we will find that our commissions and boards will perform effectively.

The Main Street manager has sought opinions and suggestions from all, so closed mind has never been the issue. Nevertheless the City foots the bill for the Main St program, not the folks in S Laurel or on 5th St Rd, so more Corbin residents should be on these committees.

We have had this debate over and over, Many of us HAVE contributed Money to all the Tri-Counties over the last 50 years. Let's not compare receipts or some feelings may get hurt. be careful going down this road of who has given the most, lot's of Great donations and support from many folks.

The last poster is again Correct, let's get Past the Closed minded debate as anytime Taxed Monies from City Residents are involved this is a serious issue, most County & City Governements are WELL aware of the very conflicts of interest this causes and Choose not to go down that road.

Many people own Business's, do contracting Work for the City, are City Employess from all over ,there are and many other folks from even out of state BUT they do not and should not have City Funding & Dipersal powers of City Taxed Monies!

This entire Situation sadly was Predicted on this very web-Site, too much money & too much politics involved to have non-city residents shooting down important projects or anything else, wake up folks.

The city Mayor & Commision has hopefully learned a Lesson, take care of your own Business, Build Good Infrastructure, Handle Your Money Corrrectly, Budget Contractors & Support Correctly, and last but not least, KNOW WHO & WHO IS NOT ON THESE BOARDS!!!!

Actually, fairly large sums of tax money that the city and tourism spend comes from outside Corbin. The restaurant tax alone, which is 75% paid by non-Corbin residents, contributes approximately $250,000 to Tourism and $750,000 to the city. The hotel tax generates far greater revenue than the restaurant tax.

25,000 people live within 5 miles of Corbin outside the city limits and sink $8-10 Million into Corbin's "City Limit" economy, income and tax revenue generated at Corbin Restaurants, Movie Theaters, Gas Stations, Grocery Stores, Retail Stores, Car and Motorcycle Dealers, CPA Firms, Banks, Attorneys, Doctors, Dentists, Bowling Lanes, Dry Cleaners, etc.

The further a person lives from the County Seat the least Government he or she receives. County Governments are inclined to spend the major share of their money in the city in which the Courthouse is located.

That is why the people who live in the county near the City limits should push to be incorporated. County Governments in Laurel, Knox, and Whitley Counties are all having financial problems. Those of us who are just outside the city should welcome annexation.

Very Nice try on try on Diverting attention from the Real Subject by use of your numbers, all of which are proabably true, your math however is a little Situational:

Your Numers still do not reflect the fact the FACT that Corbin City tax payers still have to Pay Tax's on their Property & Vehicles Vs the residents your citing that flat do not. It's really great that these 25K people probably trade in Corbin and all around the Local area. Business folks certainly appreciate their patronage.

The Tax base from personal property tax's is also a very large Base and when there are major City Issues with Infrastructure or any other Emergency the city Unfortunatly we can not call on these extra 25k people for Emergency Income, the Local Tax Payer must shoulder the Burden.

When the City Borrow's Money, Floats Bonds the Outside the City Limits Gang are NOT responsible, the Tax payers of Corbin are!!

This reminders me of the Butch Cassidy Saga, Butch & His hole in the Wall Gang would rob the Western Flyer Railroad Company constantly, this time Don (Butch Cassidy) Estep and the Outside the City Limits Gang has robbed Corbin's Fiberglass Train Express.

I also watched the last City Commission Meeting and clearly heard Comm. Farris recomend putting just a small amount of money aside for a Rainy day from the Occupational Tax, only $500,000 dollars and the other $400 Grand needs to be deployed somewhere. What????????????

I also read where the Tourism Board has an Extra $110,000 Dollars in Extra Funds that have not been spent, so let's look at some basic math, we hire an Outside Expert to Help make the City more attractive, Butch Cassidy Estep & The Hole in the wall Outside the City Limits Gang shoots down a measly 26K to just get us started and this is OK?

Is the City really serious????? i heard Comm. Farris say he did not even know who was serving on these Boards??? This sounds like a Circus, maybe we can sell Tickets to this show.

I agree with the last post. Look at all extra money the City of Corbin Has to go around. But yet the citizens of Corbin are denied an opportunity for the City's downtown area to be improved.

Samantha Swindler was correct in today's article. In my opinion she hit a home run. I believe that the City Commission should ask the four that voted "NO" to start the Cleanup of all the rundown Buildings immediately.

Give Don Estep & "The Outside the City Limits Gang" a Broom and a Mop and start cleaning up Downtown. OH don't forget to bring Joan Jett who is being paid Thousands and Thousands of Dollars to help with the cleanup as well!!!

This is Corbin's problem, and there are endless examples, from this Main Street program and the handful of people behind the sceens who want it to fail, to the character of certain members of our Industrial, Tourism and the Chamber boards and their leaders. Amazingly some of these mediocre minds have infiltrated a few positions of leadership in this town, fooling some of the people into thinking they are something that they are really not - leaders who care about the right things.

You also have some of these individuals who live in the city who deep down could care less about doing the right thing, and again there are many examples. The real problem is not where they live, or how much tax they have or haven't paid - it's the individual's character, or lack of.
