I am proud of Cavewomen because they are not always whinning and complaining about how they are being treated.  But male cavemen are the big babies. Gripe, gripe, gripe.  That's why I like Trunk monkeys so much. They are action oriented and make good things happen. I would never buy another car without a Trunk Monkey.

A great example would be Corpus Christi, Texas. A coastal city, it has never been successful at turning itself into a first-class resort town. Well, who should they get help from to turn their town around? People that have lived in the city for 30 years, or someone from San Diego, Myrtle Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, or other successful costal resort town? It's not a knock on the people of Corpus Christi, but you know, we all don't know it all (even though there are some people who like to fake their way through it).

I certainly Agree in most Part with your entire post, some very good points and yes there is no question on a Universal Basis anyone from the outside can obviously help, that Includes as you say San Diego, Detroit anywhere in the US, right?

The Point here many of us make is there are people in the city who have Business interest plus Tactical Community interest or in other words they live directly in the city and the Landscape and looks is a Major issue for them, most folks who live in let's say Oak Grove, Willimasburg, London, laurel County, Northern Knox County are great folks and could have much to offer, but unfortunatley they do not live on the corner of 4th street, 5th Street or Ky Ave.

Their Priorities are Human just like anyone else so they in turn are more concerned for there own homes and there own General area, 95% of the Folks are just like that, nothing wrong here it's just Reality.

How far out of the City can one live and sit on any board? i know people from many states and as far out as California that have very good Business interest in the city of Corbin, can they sit on the tourism Board?????? they pay just as much in Tax's as Estep and his friends???? What is the line or boundries????

Now, I gotta address your Corpus Christi Example. I have traveled there Dozens of times on Business, you picked a Poor Example especially for those of us who do Business there. Corpus Christi decided many years ago to trade the Tourism Industry to Occidental Petroleum & Exxon.

As you drive through the City the Smell from the refineries will knock you over, they are all also home to a massive Naval Fleet who service many types of ships & Aircraft. Down through the years the city has made Millions fo Tax revenues from these Industries but they traded that for their Beach tourism Dollars and are far more well off than 90% of similar Size cities in the US as far as Budgeting, Just smells really bad.

Now back to Corbin, we have contracted out tooooooooo many critical positions that effect the Lives of our local people, by doing this we have also hurt our ability to Annex, read Bob Terrels notes in here that pertain to the advantages of having a larger population and the many perks we would Quality for!!!

The City will have no appetite to expand if we continue to let some of these folks serve who do not want to be in the city anyway but we are letting them control our destiny.

Let's get a Better Local Game plan on how to expand and depend on outside contractors who have no Local Games to play and are far away instead of 300 Feet Out of the city!!! Those are the Outsiders that are really needed!!!

Come on city Commission, lay down the law, if the Mayor does not go along then overide him, you have the votes, get some Courage!!!!

Mayor McBurney is doing a fine job and I believe in the next year or two many of our boards and commissions will be much more effective. I don't think he will put up with people who are more interested in themselves than they are the people of this area

This week I have had a chance to read Samantha Swindlers Column about the strange Budget Issues regarding the Tourism Board, seems our Chairman Of the Board can not remember if they have Budget or not, interesting read.

I think I can answer Samantha's Column and have found the answer to these Questions. As I Read Don Estep's Column today it is clear he could be the next Harry Potter, he now according to his Column is spending his time watching Magic Tricks in Pigeon Forge and therefore may have the ability to make the Tourism Budget Appear then Disappear.

Anything now is possible, maybe Estep can make the 13K Appear to Bring back the Fiberglass Train Project to Build Tourism for Corbin.

It wasn't long ago when the Tourism Commission was pressuring the NIBROC group to disclose how the Tourism funds provided for NIBROC were being spent. Now our daily newspaper can't even get a copy of the Tourism budget.

What happened? What caused the change from when Tourism wanted NIBROC to be accountable for their spending of Tourism funds? Now Tourism is acting just like the NIBROC group who have not been accountable for their use of Tourism funds.

Around here the wind changes direction constantly, as do some people's beliefs, ideals and convictions.  Standing up for what you really believe in has gone out the window for some.

Could it be the weekly papers editor and the nibroc chairman is now in cahoots with each other, intentionally giving a false representation of their budget to the daily paper, so they could post their article in the weekly in their next issue. That is why the daily paper is so important. Regardless of what happens now, the daily paper can report it the next day, and the weekly has to sit back and wait, and wait, and wait, for their next issue to come out.

I'll bet the good ol' touirism chairman doesn't ask for, and won't get if he did, a copy of the nibroc expenditures detailing the money they receive from tourism.

The Times Tribune has improved very much and is now number one in reporting the facts about our local area issues. The News Journal has the arrogance and the Times Tribune has the professional journalism.

Ms. Swindler is a breath of fresh air for our area.

Strange how the weekly is constantly slamming and ridiculing the daily paper, but I have yet to see any derogatory remarks from the daily about the weekly.  What does that tell you!!

I heard that there was a good turnout at the Downtown Improvement Forum held last night at the office at the Depot.

It is great to see how Sharea Myers is leading this group of dedicated volunteers in this effort to improve our community. Mayor McBurney, as usual, was lending his support and encouragement, and three commissioners were there as well. Thanks to all who took time to offer their suggestions.

It was interesting that the weekly paper's reporter didn't make it to the meeting, and he admitted it honestly. For that he gets a star for being honest. Strange though,  you'd have thought if he couldn't make it, the other reporter, or even the editor would have came. Imagine, the first meeting and the weekly paper didn't show up. Surely they have cell phones and could have called to get it covered.

But wait, he's the tourism chairman, and he and his committee don't think they should take to big a step with this, they need to start at the bottom and work their way up. I believe that was the general statement one of them made. Please correct it if I'm wrong.

The Tourism Chairman must want the Downtown Improvement program to fail because all he does is criticize its Chairman and the competitive newspaper.

Rumor is that Tourism Chairman, known to some people as Don "Butch Cassidy" Estep, wants to decorate Downtown Main street Utility polls with Buckets Of Kentucky Fried Chicken. I hope this is not true! After firing the last shot that sank the Fiberglass Train Project, Word on main street is Estep now wants to decorate not only the Expo center with colonel Sanders, But Now, "Presto" Buckets of KFC will supposedly appear down through Main street. Is this Another Illusion he is trying to perform for everyone???? You remember, Estep claimed one moment the Tourism Budget Appeared, then Disappeared in thin air!!!!  Word is also that Don "Butch Cassidy" Estep and the "Outside the City Limits Gang" will be the Opening act For Joan Jett, Performing Magic Trix????????? Has anyone Else Heard this?

I have heard this also - chicken buckets hanging from downtown street lights. I know Estep has a fasination with Colonal Sanders, and the Colonel has a rich history with our town, but I don't think the rest of the tourism board will go along with this. We want tourists to identify Corbin with scenic beauty, a vibrant Main Street, arts, music, shopping, our rich history with the railroad - but not greasy, unhealthy fast food. Sorry to those KFC fans, but the museum is enough - we need real tourism attractions and marketing, not KFC buckets hanging from the sky - we'll be the laughing stock.

In today's News Journal, Editor Don Estep is Complaining about other forms of Advertisements such as BillBoards. Seems as though Estep is always critical of other forms of Media and Advertisement. Always blasting the Times Tribune and there staff. When election time rolls around,Estep Claims the political Signs offend him,too many in town and they should be stopped. Now you see in his column today it's the BillBoards that should'nt be allowed.

I wonder if Terry Forcht owned some of those Billboards Don Estep would be running his mouth about them then? It looks as if Estep doesn't want any other form of advertisement except through his Grand Newspaper. You can really see straight through this guy now. It's his way or no way! Sour Grapes!!!!!

Come on Folks, tell me your kidding me here? Giant Buckets Of Chicken hanging from Street Lights? Has Estep and the Wild West "Outside the City Limits Gang" struck again?

Butch Cassidy Estep shoots down a well thought out project for Giant Buckets Of Chicken hanging from the street lights, and in the meantime he is learning Magic tricks in Pigeon Forge.

This sounds like an Escapee from the Looney Bin somewhere, I also want to see Ole "Butch" Estep front and center at that Joan Jett Concert with all the Gothic Crew that will show up.

I certainly hope the our Hero's do not get away with this caper, Giant Buckets Of Chicken? I think the Place to put the First Giant Bucket is in front of the News Journal Office.

Where is the Mayor & City Commission during "The Hole In The Wall Gang Of Outsiders" current Chicken Heist? And this will help Tourism? We'll be the Laughing Stock of the Nation on this one!

While I agree the chicken bucket theme may be over the top, I do believe we need to play up our ties to Colonel Sanders.  He is one of the most recognized faces in the world.  This is a tourism boards dream, and one that has not been capitalized on.  We can be tasteful (Ha!) about it.  Although, a little tongue in cheek humor around here could be useful.  It's healthy to be able to laught at yourself.  If we were the laughingstock of the whole nation, heck, at least they'd know who we are! There is a middle ground here if we look for it.

OK, I've worked out the lamppost/banner Main Street plan: On the first lamppost hangs a KFC Extra Chrispy Fried Chicken Bucket, next lamppost is a KFC box of Biscuits and Gravy, next lamppost is a Dixie Dog oozing with Chili, onions and cheese (with Onion Rings), next lamppost is a Dixieburger from the Root Beer Stand, the next lamppost is a Root Beer Ice Cream Float in a giant glass Mug, the next lamppost on Main Street is a giant syringe full of Heparin blood thinner, the next lamppost a large capsule full of Lotrel Blood Pressure Medication, the next lamppost a giant vascular stent, and the last lamppost a large art deco banner with a 1950's retro style Alka-Seltzer ad.

Please offer your thoughts at the next Tourism Commission meeting.

Ya think Estep will negotiate a Middle Ground? Given his Ego & Track record we would should have already been at that point.

First, Sanders was, from the relatives of mine and others in our church that dealt with him back then telling me this, a real "butthead" personality wise.  That said, his wife was the cultural and philanthropist of the family.  She was the one that ran the show, not him.  She supported the chairities, and supported the arts and all.  Now, all those that have told me that over the years, are dead and gone, so there's no confirmation to that.

That said, I agree we could and should have some things associated with him and the KFC saga. But not banners and statues.  Having the KFC sign on the emblem of our city vehicles, especially the police cars, is totally ridiculious. Are they still there?

And the railroad, another story. Yes, it was instrumental in our towns development, but, that is a past issue as well. Many didn't know the rail yards were not in the city. Every time it was discussed in the early days, the railroad threatened to pull out if we annexed them. Now, it wouldn't be as easy. They have major investment dollars there.

For tourism, it seems based on their reported meetings, that all they do is donate money. Nothing proactive. If not, show me where to look.

I like the way Estep and his "Gang" of outsiders has tried divert folks from reading this Thread and get the heat off of them and on to something else? Nice Try, this thread has been viewed over 3000 times!!!

Great Information Tool for the Community and folks that love freedom of information and exposing the activities that should be Public to all of he Tax Payers of Corbin!!!

Those are some really great posts there, the last several of them.

I've noticed that many of the city "fathers" will not give this site any credit, which shows they're afraid of it.  Particularly Estep and Carpenters group, plus some of the members of their committees.

I've talked to two of the commissioners in the last 2 weeks about this site, and they first sort of chuckled when I mentioned it. Then, after asking some pointed questions, their smiles turned to straight faces.  Particularly when asked about the donations for nibroc, and also the old hospital issue.
