Don Estep has an excellent point in his Editorial today about this issue. Smoking kills.

I agree with you and Mr. Estep. Smoking kills. And so does Alcohol. The mayor could kill two birds with one stone at the next commission meeting. You could show up and make the recommendation. Two evils removed from Corbin. Thanks!

I don't think you can equate alcohol to smoking. Alcohol is more heavily regulated and is not as addictive as smoking. Alcohol has allowed us to get some nice restarants. It has increased our tax base.

Especially after you've had a few drinks.

Lets not confuse the smoking issue with the alcohaol issue. If we do nothing will get accomplished. Lets attack one vice at a time, and that is smoking right now.

Smoking has caused more misery to families and society than it ever put money in farmer's pockets. let's end the misery in the this generation. We need a ban on smoking in this town.

Any place in particular?

It is already no smoking at Corbin schools, Federal, State and City offices, all banks, churches, most all stores like Penneys, Belks, etc.

Is it mainly restaurants that you are concerned with?

If so just quit going and make your own statement.

True that would make a point but why should I , or anyone else be penalized. I enjoy eating out. Folks can smoke outside . They should not be able to spoil my evening with their smoke.

I've talked to several students and they still wish to push for the "smoke free" ban in Corbin public places. One of them told me that the City Leaders advised McNeil, the School superintendant, to rein Chris hart in on the issue or they would withhold annexing the new school into the City limits. Has anyone else heard this?

I haven't heard this, but I doubt if it has any credibility.

The school system itself would come out ahead if the school wasn't annexed. It's the city that will lose, and lose big time, if they don't annex it.

of course there are close ties between the City and school. They use the same atty who calls all the shots.

The city doesnt really want to annex the new school. it won't benefit the city. There will not be any new tax base. But if they are going to have to do it anyway the commissioners didnt want to be told by some temporary teacher that they have to ban smoking. The matter should have been handled differently and it would have passed. Now the Commissioners feel like they can't back down.
