Corbin Board of Education: comments and questions.

Thought I'd start this here, since it's the Redhound Sports thread, and we'll expand on it.

Throw your questions and comments on the thread. I do know a couple of the board members read this site, so, it may do some good.

My first ones:

Good job on fixing the track so we can have meets there. I had hoped to get it done earlier, but, better late than never. I know it's a money thing, so, still yet, good job.

The new elementary is beautiful so far, keep up the good work.  Now, lets work on the high school.

How is our overall enrollment. Up or down.

WYMT is reporting Corbin Asst. Football Coach Burley Foley was arrested Friday Night.  Public Intoxication.

Has the Board Suspended him from his coaching job? Surely he will not be on the sidelines anymore. What a Bad Example to High School Kids.

When is the board going to put a stop to this kind of behavior.  Coaches need to be monitored.  I have seen how coaches do these kids and its not right.  Mistreating children is wrong, physically or mentally.

Wow! No Public Statement on this matter from the Board, Principal or Supt??? Our Game will be on WYMT on Friday.

Hopefully the Mountain News folks will spare us and not mention one of our Coach's as being arrested for Public Intoxication, this will be broadcast to half of the State.

Surely the Board will not let Foley back on the sidelines, how humiliating for the entire school system!!!

No one forces them to play.  If they are being mistreated that badly, they can quit.

  • You think our kids should quit because a coach got in trouble? That is not the way justice should work. I didn't see anyone say Coach Foley mistreated the players. But is he is not punished you feel the players should quit. Wow! That is a ridiculous solution. Blame the kids for something someone else did.

This is hilarious. One thread for Burley is not enough, huh? My husband coaches middle school football and I have been around Redhound football since we got married 23 years ago. One thing I can say for certain is that all of the coaches I have been acquainted with over the years (I haven't known them all) have been there for the right reason THE KIDS. My husband volunteers his time and has for several years to take part in the sport he loves so he can help the kids develop the same love and respect for the game. I have never seen any child mistreated however, I have seen many times the extra effort taken for that one kid who might need a little more attention and without it and these coaches, many of these kids would end up who knows where. Here is the example that the school board set for the kids. Coach in trouble, Coach made mistake, Coach is punished. The example I find there is if you get in trouble there will be a consequence. Pretty good example if you ask me. By the way, just how many of you have never done anything wrong? I am curious.

I have been around athletics all my life.  Coaches do mistreat kids.  It has happened in all sports that I know of, especially cheerleading, baseball, volleyball, etc.  Its who you are a lot of times, as to  who get special treatment especially in middle school and lower.  Burley though is a great guy and I can honestly say he has never hurt a kid.  It does happen and maybe the coaches don't realize the little things they say and do does bother these kids.  I remember my coaches and some of the things they did.  It does have an affect on you.

I have attended a couple of different Games this year at Campbell Field, always like to watch the kids play in all Grade Levels, its just a great this time of year! I am stunned at the Music Blasting over the PA Systems before games latley?

Does the Superintendent know what is going on, the words to these Rap Songs are Violent, Degrading Women and down right filthy?? It is shame the School System supports this degrading Music and the terrible Language being used.

As a fan I was very upset, if I had a child there I would have taken them home.

Shame on the School for Filthy Language!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No Reply from the School on the last post?? Guess it's hard to defend when they do not know what is going on?

I wish someone would Tape some of this Language and play it at the next school board meeting, I'd like to see the embarassment on their faces as this filthy language is blurted out.

Disgusting!!!!

I don't think anyone has to Ed anything, he gets a Large salary to investigate and find these things out on his own, his principals and executive leadership should be reporting to him. If anyone has to tell Ed whats going on at School Events then maybe we have the wrong guy in there???

Maybe the last Poster is a responsible party but most probably did nothing, and oh by the way, the foul language has stopped, so somebody paid attention and darn well read this website as this activity stopped shortly after these posts hit the airways.

I agree with Mrs. Croely at the last School Board Meeting, adding another Six Figure Salary without it being proved as Value Added and what return it will give the system was Silly and reckless. They voted this in even before they investigated the worth and the Criteria of what this job would even entail???

That's nothing but PORK that Ed McNeel is pushing, building more Administration, More paperwork, More Top heavy payroll is certainly not the way to be efficient and frugal with our tax dollars!!!

Nice Job Kim for standing up against this Pork Fest!!!!!!

Sorry, you're wrong there pal.

With the expansion and growth coming to the school system in the near future, we need someone in the position they described. The corbin schools are growing quickly, with students transferring in all the time. That's a fact. And look for a big influx after christmas for the next semester. People know a quality school system when they see one, and no other school around here can measure up to corbin.

They want their kids to get the best education they can, and around here, that's corbin.

It is hard to argue with success. Corbin's Schools are ranked near the top in every category. We are one of the few school systems that is growing in numbers of students. I admire Mrs. Croley for her desire to gain more informaion. At the same time, I believe in supporting success. Corbin's schools do a great job!

Kim is just new to the board, and needs time to research things a bit. I think she'll agree with what they did when she looks into it further.

Yes, we have success at the level we are at now, but we're growing quickly, and we need to keep up with the pace, and the programs.

You have to grow with the growth, or you'll falter and fall.

No Pal, your wrong!

This is the same thinking that has gotten numerous entities & companies in trouble. Adding Top Heavy overhead has nothing to do with Adding students and Expanding the Program. Ford & GM made the same mistake as they expanded years ago, they got top heavy and you see the results today.

The Position should be clearly defined as Value Added, not a paperwork shuffler or another person who sends emails and signs forms, these are the things we have to look at as we expand. We also have to make sure our money is invested into Value Added tasks that educate the Kids first and formost.

No question the program has done well but as this program expands the recipe should not be to add wasteful tasks but ones that are value added and not a step back but something that will keep us at the top.

Ford & GM both thought they were at the top also, expanded, added Top Heavy management, Invested into Non-Value Added Programs, now look.

Let's think ahead and make sure any position gives us a good ROI and keeps us at the top, let's not make the same mistake as many have made in the past and simply add positions with six figure salaries just because we expand.

More Students may equal more Teachers but may not equal more paper shufflers? What's the Criteria and What is it that made Mrs. Croely who is an extremley educated person to say NO to this scheme? I doubt it was the fact that she is new to the Board, that Ole excuse is what got Ford in the tank, listening to the old guard just about put them out of business.

Adding Adminstration in any company is viewed as Waste and should be looked at Extremley Close before doing this, Adding Teachers is a Value!!

Nope, don't agree with you.

Teachers are like troops in combat. They are in the trenches, fighting the battles daily. They are mired down with so much paperwork, forms, evaluations, and reports that it's hard for them to really teach. They are the ones that make our system what it is.

I know Kim personally, and have talked with her since the meeting and the article. She just didn't agree with it. The others did.

I feel it's not about the position, but who will fill it. The politics will then enter into the scene when it's announced and the qualifications are listed.

Greed is what toppled GM and Ford, and yes it came from the top. Now, they're playing catch up. But they aren't a tax supported entity, the school board is.

Sorry, just don't agree with you.

Your Right, we certainly do not agree on several points. First of all they are not like troops in Combat, your comparing Apples & Oranges. Second, the very reason they do not have time to teach is the waste in the system, paperwork, walking, waiting, shuffling Non-Value Added motions that keep them from doing their jobs.

My exact point is before you add overhead which is Waste, Correct the Issues and Problems first that you just mentioned, adding over head will unfortunatley not relive that waste that exisits now. Most companies make this mistake on a daily basis and add overhead thinking it will take away the waste which hurts their people in the trenches when it really in the end only adds to more waste!

Correct and Invest into the Elimination Of Real Waste that is creating the current Bottlenecks in todays Teacher problems an Issues, if you Value Stream and Anylyze what they really need to eliminate the waste I can tell you sir from experience that adding overhead will not be one of the Value Added Solutions and will not in the end correct the problems the Teachers face, you will on the other hand add Overhead and Administration, Cost up your Budget even more and not solve any of the Problems the Teachers really have.

I would suggest your read Lean Thinking by Wommack and the Toyota Way by Jeff Liker, also Tax supported entities such as County Governments, State Governements & the Federal Government all suffer from these same issues and now are hiring consulting companies at light speed to help them understand what is Value & What is Not.

Greed certainly did hurt Ford & GM but not correcting the Waste in the System from start to finish made their Vehicles more Expensive, their Quality Poor and their Customer Service Overwhelmed, now their trying to catch up and copy the Toyota Production System by partnering at NUMMI and several other Waste Eliminating Entities, in other words they learned their lesson the hard way.

You are correct, we certainly do not agree what so ever as I think Investments in Eliminating Real Waste & problems must happen first before you Add further Administrative overhead.

And I also talked with Kim, we apparently have differing views here but in the end she voted NO.

My analogy was and is, troops in combat. That's what teachers face today. The enemy, however, is our governments, local, state, and federal, and the way the politicians play with our educaitonal system. The teachers are fighting the war and the leaders are making the decisions from afar, using education dollars as a leverage for other things, their favorite road projects, flood walls, bridges, etc.

Let's just say we disagree on this issue and move on.

OK

Your entitled to your opinion on the Comparison between the Troops and Corbin Teachers or just Teachers in General. My point is adding Overhead that will not solve the everyday problems of the people in the trenches.

The first response all Consulting Companies who deal with this issue every day from Customers or Clients is this: "Just Give us more People and we can do the Job". More Overhead and people only make it worse if the Core problems that are causing the waste is not Eliminated. I have to aplogize for not posting a Solution or another Idea to this point but instead just Dis-Agreeing:

This position will be a six figure job, with Benefits the total package may be around 150K, lets just use that as a Baseline, +/- 10%. Over 25 years this Position would Cost the District 2.5-3.0 Million Dollars, do the Math.

We could take 250K, bring in the Top Lean/Sigma Experts in the nation for Value Stream Training, Waste Elimiation, Execution and Knowlege transfer withe our Teachers, Executive Management and School Board. Run a series of Improvement Events over that One-Year time Frame, Eliminate 20%-40% of the Waste in the System, SAVE the School System in the Range of 5-6 Million over the next 2-5 Years and make the Teachers actual service time with the Students 10 Times more productive and much easier on them.

This is the Recipe to an Efficient & Productive System and Cost 10 Times less and be much more Value Added 2-5 Years from now.

No, the position they talk about will not be a six figure job. It will probably not be more than a tenured teachers salary. It is basically a compliance position. To keep us in line with the current policies, laws, requirements and such as that.

Even more so, it would be someone more in line with being a principal or that type of position.

I spoke to several members about this. We're just trying to stay a step ahead of the changing times.

Sorry, I'm for this.

And, with that said, I hope the new high school project isn't far behind. We're way overdue on this.

It's hard to believe this would not be a six figure Job, add the benefits package in and we will see. I have not seen the proposed Salary either, so you may have inside information. I do know what Mr. McNeel quoted in the paper and his reasoning for the position.

He clearly stated this was being created to free up other administration to do other administration things??? What Waste again is this Eliminating on the teachers by adding further waste?

Your certainly entitled to be for this but you seem to not be able to say what waste by creating this position will be Eliminated? Once Again read Jim Womacks Lean Thinking, The Toyota Production systems first edition and Jeff likers Toyota Way.

Creating these positions does not ever Add Value and only adds waste as Companies, School Systems, Governements grow.

I respect Mr. McNeel and the school board, they have done a very good job but as the Budget turns from a small town type of operation to Multi-Million Dollar System the Waste of Top Heavy overhead that only adds cumbersome Paperwork and Bureocracy (Sorry for the wrong spelling) will only add to the problems.

As I said before, Eliminate the Waste in the Value Stream first, then add personal if you have to, if you do this in reverse it will cost 50 Times as much to solve this five years from now!!!!

I wonder if one of the Players on the football team were to get arrested for Public drunkeness, cause a major scene at a public restaurant in the city and be back on the football team two or three games later?

Wow

I believe the Post your referring to has to do with one of the Asst. coaches being arrested a few weeks ago.

The poster is saying what would have happened if this would have been a player rather than a coach?????
