TAX BILLS BOUGHT: another round starting soon

The weekly paper today reported a New York firm sending two blank checks to purchase ALL of the outstanding tax bills for whitley county. One check for the bills, the other for the filing fees or something.

This is a good and bad thing.

Good for the county, it's getting it's money, all at once.

Bad for the property owners, who if hey paid their bills, wouldn't be in the shape they will be soon.

A close personal friend of ours had their tax bill bought a couple years ago.  The original bill, at the regular no discount rate, was a little over $850.  They didn't pay it. Just didn't pay it.

The out of state firm bought the bill, and they ended up paying over $1900 for it, less than an year later, to stop their property being sold. The "reasonable attorney fees" is what got them.

This will happen more and more looks like.
