RE: Times Tribune is London paper

I read both local papers, and I guess I'm having a hard time following your issue here. Were there sports events in Corbin that took place that the Times-Tribune ignored? What important sports stories did the Times-Tribune fail to report on Friday? A practice? New sod on the football field? Repainting the dougouts at the baseball field?

You keep complaining about being forced to read London sports stories, but you don't tell us what Corbin sports events you didn't get to read about in the Times-Tribune.

What Corbin sports events did they miss?

Why not preview the rest of the sports for fall.  I think what the majority of the people on this site want is to see the Times Tribune put more things about Corbin sports than just London as Main Article everyday.  True there hasn't been a lot of games to cover but they can preview other sports etc.  Just keep reading the newpaper you will see how corbin sports is second to Laurel County schools.  It has been since Corbin Times was sold.  Everyone knows their reporters are from London.  I hope the Times Tribune proves this site wrong.

A hard time following the issue????????????

What in the heck do you think we want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd rather read about painting the dugouts, mowing the football field, or putting up new nets than anything in london or laurel county.

You must not know, that Corbin is in both Knox and Whitley county, not Laurel or London. Did you just move to town.

London and Laurel County makes it very clear they want nothing to do with Corbin. They refer to the North Corbin as South Laurel County.

I want the corbin sports teams car washes for nibroc covered.

I want the corbin practice sessions for football covered.

I want the conditioning program for corbin basketball covered.

I want the corbin soccer program practices covered.

I don't care what it is, cover it.

And to add, Lynn Camp is considered a Corbin oriented school as well. Cover them too.  Knox county, or West Knox, is part of the city of Corbin in various areas.  And we don't mind if you cover Whitley County and Williamsburg either, as they are a part of Corbin in a sense, as we vote for their county officials.

Today, Saturday, you had an article on the Laurel Fiscal Court trying to screw the Laurel County fire departments out of money owed to them.  We don't care about that, as they are not part of corbin.  Put it in the London paper.

And I'll mention this,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the World Chicken Festival, was initiated with a Corbin Business, Kentucky Fried Chicken.  KFC was not started as a part of South Laurel County. Back then it took an hour to get there from here. They didn't claim it until they found there is nothing in laurel county worthy of have a festival for.  They could have called it the "Weavers Hot Dog Festival", but who would have attended that.

The Times Tribune is a "CORBIN" paper, and thats the way it is. I for one have talked with several advertisers to use their ad dollars leverage to "encourage" the paper to cover the corbin sports, news, issues and anything else that comes up.

That's just the way it is.

Bill Hanson, the Times Tribune editor, is on the Economic Development Board. What good is he doing by not reporting on their progress and actions.  It would seem he could clear a lot of the smoke coming from this committee. Clear it up as in to provide us the facts and figures of the board's operation and we can either see how hard the board works and get off their backs, or, see how little the do and how ineffective they are and get a new board in there.

And, while we're at it, put Samantha Swindler from the Times Tribune on the Tourism Committee. I love her work and she shoots straight, and she could provide us with the reporting we need as to the operation of this board. We'll either get of Estep's back, or we'll get on it and have him removed.  Right now, Estep only reports what he wants to in his paper, and we have no neutral party to see what is actually going on with our tax dollars.

Estep loves to slam the other paper in his, let's see how he operates with one of them sitting in the same room when they discuss their goings on.

How about it.

How about it.

I don't think so.

But he is on the Chamber board.

A question here,

The weekly paper is constantly talking about they have the largest paid daily circulation newspaper in the region, so therefore they are supposed to get all the government advertisements, like the state and federal court forclosure cases, where they charge the maximum rate for these ads.  That was a big issue for them years ago. And they are big money makers for the paper.

How can a weekly paper have a higher circulation than a daily, since the Times reaches out into laurel county.  I've never believed that.

Comments or opinions.

People are now getting the picture on how ineffective the Times Tribune is.  They don't cover anything from Corbin.  When are they going to wake up.  Yes lets put samantha either on Tourism or Chamber it would be great.  Maybe she can give accurate report on what is going on.

yes then maybe people will see what Don Estep and the Tourism do and what Bruce Carpenter and his group do.  I think they both do a great job.  Some people just like to report without knowing the facts on either board.  People should not report if they don't know all the facts.  Suggestions are great but knocking a program is not right without solid facts.

The Times Tribune provided a great sports section last March for the 13th Region Basketball Tournament. Each day there was coverage of box scores and stories on each game. They also did a good job on the Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament.  One reason there is more about Laurel County is because the Laurel County Teams have done a better job in sports competition.

The Times Tribune did a good job on Corbin's Tennis program which has been very successful in recent years.

We need a daily newspaper in Corbin. There have been some good posts with some suggestions about how they should cover Corbin more effectively.

One reason there is more news about Laurel, Whitley, and Knox County is that the three counties are in lousy financial condiition. There is much more crime in the three counties outside Corbin. There is more corruption in those three County Governments.  There are some types of news coverage a community should be pleased they don't receive.

The Times Tribune has certainly had many reports about the academic accomplishments Corbin High School's system has received. The Corbin Times Tribune pays property taxes in Corbin, their employees pay occupational taxes in Corbin, and their owners pay occupational taxes on their profits. Its great to make suggestions for improvement but it is wrong to try to run some business out of town. The News Journal Publisher recently wrote, "the website should close down", and I tip my hat to the owner of this website for standing up for free speech. It sounds like this is an effort to run out our daily paper and any other media that they don't control. Let's keep freedom of speech!

And its great to see Corbin's soccer program getting some visability on this website.

You're right about putting Swindler on either or both those boards, and you're right about seeing what Estep and Carpenter does, exactly. We want to see what they are doing, how they are doing it, how it gets done. That's the point. We want to see. We don't trust what is going on right now.  For three years tourism says they want an accounting of the money they give Carpenter for nibroc. Now, all of a sudden, this year, he don't ask. WHY???? WHY didn't he ask, and WHY didn't he get one the last few years and this year. WHY?

Hanson sits on the Economic Dev Board, and we know nothing, nothing.  So what good is he to the paper, the board, and the public he represents.  He's obligated to let us know what is going on.

Yes, I remember Estep's column on shutting this website down.  And, it still stands. He talks out of the side of his mouth when it comes to free speech it seems like, free speech only for those that agree with him.

It doesn't matter how well the laurel county teams do. I'd rather see a last place corbin team and their LOCAL players sitting on the bench than any laurel county team winning the state championship.  I'd rather read about a new corbin garbage truck that my tax dollars bought than the laurel judge exec and his water park proposal.

Yes, the times did a good job on the region tourney last year. What else could they do, it was the only show in town. I hope they would cover it.

I don't want the Times out of corbin, I want them in corbin, covering corbin, talking about corbin. They are a great asset to us, but, they need to remember, they're here beause of us as well. The locals that started and built the paper was from corbin, and that's why the people support it.  It's a corbin paper.

How about this.

To satisfy the london/laurel readers and the few london business's that advertise with the times, have a "Laurel County News" page. Say about page 3 or 4 or so.  If you need more than one page, then give it to them in the middle of the paper next to the sectoin on garbage composting. Same for the laurel county sports, put it on their own page right after the laurel news, with the section on washing pressure treated wood.

Send Dixon and Parsons to london every day to do whatever it is they do, and hire a dedicated reporter for corbin news and sports.

How about sponsoring an intern program at corbin and let some of the journalism students do real reporting and story writing.

Yes you are right! Todays, Mondays paper is full of Laurel County Schools.  There is not one thing Corbin.  What a joke.  THE PEOPLE OF CORBIN NEED TO STOP TAKING THIS PAPER AND STOP ADVERTISING. To preview Laurel County schools is fine but not MAIN article.  Please post your concerns maybe they will get the picture or better yet lets boycott paper for a day.

I can't believe the Times Tribune today.  You are right the sports page is getting worse.  Nothing in sports page about Corbin and all its fall sports starting.  I still have not seen any schedules for any of our fall sports.  When does football, soccer, golf have matches.

I got the London paper and they have two big article on Laurel County Volleyball.  Nothing in their paper on Corbin.  Why can't the Times realize that London doesn't need us to cover their sports.  They already have a paper who cover all their sports and we have a paper that cover them as Well.  Hello Times what about the Corbin Teams.

Hello everyone. I though I'd reply here so you feel that we're not ignoring your suggestions and also to clarify a few things.
Yup, we're a Tri-County paper, and we do cover Laurel, Knox and Whitley counties. The other papers in the area aren't dailies for a reason. To continue to be a daily paper, we have to cover a greater area than a weekly might.
Also, I've talked to our sports editor, and he told me that the reason we had Laurel County volleyball games last week was because Corbin hadn't started its games yet. Yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's papers all have Corbin sports. Also, the dates of upcoming matches are at the end of game stories.
I can't change the fact that we are covering a greater area than in years past, but I also don't want our Corbin coverage to suffer. I've made a concerted effort to cover more Corbin news since I've come to this paper, and I think we do a good job. Of course, there are things we can improve on, and if there's something we're missing, call me at the paper or e-mail me.
If someone actually wants to take the time to count our news stories and ads, well, it's your vacation. I'll say that in Tuesday's paper, we had the Corbin City Commission, a Corbin mother sentenced in the death of her son, a fire in Corbin, photos of clearing NIBROC, a Whitley County grand jury story and a Corbin Tourism Commission story on the front page.
In Wednesday's edition, we had the expo center groundbreaking, a story involving the Whitley County sheriff, a story on a red caboose for Corbin, a man who drowned in southern Laurel County (in an area just outside of Corbin) and a Laurel County Fiscal Court story on the front page. (And actually, if you live in north Corbin, you should know that the Laurel Fiscal Court will take out a loan to help fire departments in Lily, Keavy and other communities near Corbin not served by the city fire department.)
Look, forums are great and good ideas come from the site (and come on, all city officials read them, they just don't admit it.) Everyone has an opinion about both newspapers, but if you're going to talk about the Times-Tribune, I'll add my quick two cents. I work too hard for this newspaper not to defend it.
But now I'll gracefully bow out and let ya'll continue. If anyone has any questions, please e-mail me at sswindler@thetimestribune.com.

Thank you for your very professional yet down to earth reply.  Your competitor would never do that in this forum.

I'll stand back and watch the paper. I hope your corbin sports coverage becomes as dominate as your corbin advertisers in your paper.

Thanks.

But you did step up and defend yourself and your paper which is more than Estep would ever do!!!!! Some definite Coutesy based on your Post is certainly extended, expect the questions to continue but that's the first step in defusing future problems and perceptions.

Your Instincts are also commended as over 3000 folks is reading this site, your definitley tuned in.
