Nibroc not welcoming?

I know it isn't a reflection of everyone that lives in Corbin, but my boyfriend and I traveled several hours yesterday to attend the "free" Joan Jett concert we saw advertised online. No where on the advertisment did it say you had to have a special sponsor ticket to get inside the seated area before 9:15PM. We came early in hopes of getting good seats, but were forced to stand outside the barricade for over 4 hours before Joan Jett took the stage. While standing around the outskirts of the barricade several committee members were rude with us, and other guests, about where we could stand or sit. Some of us have physical ailments not seen by the naked eye, such a healing broken femur and hip displacement, but we were forced to sit on a small curb which elevated pain and brought much displeasure to what should have been an enjoyable event.

My boyfriend and I were not the only ones to feel left out. Many around us also voiced their displeasure in learning the seats to the "free" concert were not on a first come, first serve basis. In the future please state on all flyers, websites, commercials, etc., that seats are reserved for sponsor's who have VIP tickets. A lot of out of town guests will not ever visit Nibroc again because of the treatment we endured yesterday. Trust me, I had four hours to talk to those around me, and everyone was feeling a bit let down by the rudeness of the committee members.

I did however meet some nice people, but I don't know why the committee members thought they had so much authority over the festival guests. It wasn't as if were we causing a riot. The most anyone did was ask why the seats were blocked off. It certainly isn't that way in my hometown where committee members are there for guidance and to answer questions; nicely answee questions.

Thank you for having a place for me to voice my concerns. I hope someone that matters actually reads this and talks to the committee members about their behavior.

The people they are referring to here are volunteers not committee members.  The sponsors give the money and deserve to sit in reserved seats.  If  you had brought your own chair you could have come in right away.  If a person had was handicap they came in right a way and place in handicap section in front.  Sounds like someone from Corbin wrote this, once again its the same person who tries to cut all chamber of commerce events.   If you are an outsider please post name and where you are from. If not the volunteers did an outstanding job and without them NIBROC would not go on.  Thanks to all who helped it was best ever.

How rude.  Why cant we as a community just apologize for this--or anything else for that matter??  Why do you automatically assume this is from a citizen of Corbin sending a bogus complaint?  Not everyone is out to undermine the efforts of the Tourism people.  I for one am tickled that we are getting so many improvements overnight!!  This poster sounds real to me...and very believable at that.  From a Corbinite, I'm sorry for your inconvenience.  Hopefully we will improve the next time.  Not everyone here is so self-centered.

My relatives came down from Lexington and couldn't get over how nice and friendly everyone was at Nibroc.  We didn't have tickets but sat outside the fence.  Actually we had better seat then most in ticket area.  I give the workers an A for great job keeping crowd under control.  It was a very safe enviroment and I even brought my children.

Thank you! I assure you I am not from Corbin and I appreciate you being so kind. As I said before I did meet some really nice people in Corbin, and I wouldn't be surprised if you might have been one of them.

If it had been stated on the website, or any of the other means of advertising, we would have brought a chair to gain entrance to the inside, and possibly proof of physical ailments. I assure you that I am not from Corbin. I also will not be posting my name as you did not post yours. I was a guest from Letcher Co. and the volunteers could have been a little nicer when telling other festival goers where they could, or could not, stand or sit. They literally barked at people like they were doing something wrong. Did you see anyone trying to cause a riot or break down the barricade? No, and that's because no one tried to do so. I sat and listened as people asked the volunteers questions and in turn the volunteers where snappy with guests. I also never said the sponsors didn't deserve VIP tickets, but it would have been nice if that information had been available for out of town guests. We still would have come down for the concert, but being unaware of the sponsor tickets we thought we would be able to get a seat.

Yes the people are sorry for any inconvience to you and the volunteers were just doing their job.  I am not making any excuses but I sat next to the fence and numerous times they tried to sneak in and even climb over the fence.  The volunteers did their best to keep things in order.  I feel they did a great job.  The workers were dealing with literally 6 to 10 thousand people last night.  We have started a message board for suggestions for 2008.  Instead of making this negative board of NIBROC not welcoming, maybe it would be better to make a few suggestions for 2008.  How would you like it if they called you festival not welcoming.  Negative comments go no where but a few positive points  will go a long way.  We really appreciate your comments and hopefully the committee will see them.

It was not my intention to be negative, but to merely express my opinion and I thought the message board was an area for me to do so. I even stated that I know the attitude of a few volunteers doesn't reflect on Corbin as a whole. I named the thread, "Nibroc not welcoming?" and I had hoped the question mark made it obvious that I wasn't trying to be rude, but rather to voice what had happened to me, and those around me. I know the behavior of a few doesn't reflect on the festival as a whole. If someone felt mistreated at our festival and I read it on a message board such as this I would contact the festival committee personally and let them know how out of town guests felt.

The issues I had were hours before the concert began when people began sitting around the barricade to claim a pretty good spot. I saw people climbing over the fence once night fell, but they were rude to us when it was daylight and the most anyone was doing was claiming a place next to the fence, or asking about the seats inside.

i also don't like the wording Nibroc not welcoming?  Just because a few volunteers were very firm in their job does not welcome that.  I hope the administrator of this site can take this off, it is unfair to the majority of Corbin people.

I do believe I made it quite clear that I did meet nice people in Corbin and that the attitudes of a few did not reflect Corbin as a whole. If you had read everything I had to say you should have seen that. In fact, I stated it several times.

The volunteers were more than firm; they were flat out rude. "Don't stand there. You can't sit there. I said get back. Don't touch that. Shut up and listen to me." Those were just a few of the things I heard volunteers say in very rude tones. It's one thing to nicely ask someone to please not stand in a certain area, but it's another to be downright rude when guests were just trying to secure a good position to see the show.

Honestly, I don't feel like anyone is reading what I have to say. They look at the title and think I'm bashing Corbin, but I'm not. I met nice people yesterday, but some of the volunteers were rude and I wanted to voice how a lot of us out of town guests felt. I never meant to offend anyone, but I think people are only half-reading what I'm saying. I just wish some of the volunteers had been a little nicer. That's all.

I apologize for the issues you had at Joan Jett, and for the comments and attitude of the above poster - they don't speak for the majority. Unfortunately, along with the dozens of local volunteers who are very good people and work very hard to make this festival go smoothly, there are always one or two bad apples, and a couple of them take the power they are given for 4 days a bit too seriously. They also somehow believe there could never be a complaint, that it has to be some sort of conspiracy.

Most of the volunteers try to make Nibroc a success and fun for everyone. My hats off to all of the people who put NIBROC together - its a big job - but like any event, business, athlete/sports team, or in any aspect of life, you can always do better, even if you somehow get in your head that you have reached perfection. And while Nibroc has many, many good points, it is far from perfect. Every complaint or suggestion - especially as nicely worded as yours - needs to be listened to, respected and appreciated.

Nibroc is not a visit from the President, it is not Woodstock, it is not the Olympics. It is a local community festival, one of thousands that take place annually around our country. There is nothing wrong with being proud of Corbin and Nibroc, but you have to keep it in perspective, and realize no matter how great you might think it is, it can always be even better.

To the poster not liking this Nibroc visitor's "Nibroc not welcoming?" topic question, you might not like the wording, but this was her experience and this is how she feels. Again, her words need to be to be listened to, respected and appreciated, not disgarded.

We hope you visit Corbin again. We have many good people here, and some of our committees function as your town's committees do. Again, it is another area that can be improved.

Please send me an e-mail with your contact information to rsterrell@corbinkentucky.us, and corbinkentucky.us will send you a gift certificate for you and your boyfriend to dine at the The Depot on Main, Tuscany Gardens, or any local restaurant of your choice. You'll probably end up meeting some Nibroc volunteers that are pretty cool people.

Best Regards,

Bob Terrell (Jr.)

We hear you, but these volunteer gave their time for nothing and were treated bad also by many rude people who tried to lie and sneak around.  They had many people give all kinds of reasons why they deserved special treatment.  One even said Joan Jett put them on a list at a local resturant to get special treatment.  I don't hear any of those rude people saying they are sorry for how they acted.  I felt all the volunteers from my seat did an outstanding job and didn't deserve the rude people in the crowd.  How many times, I heard them have to tell people the same thing over and over.  Keep the aisle clear, sit only behind reserved seats, stay off fence, don't jump fence etc.  It started when I got there at 6:30 on.  I don't think it merits this Nibroc not welcoming?  The people of Corbin don't deserve this at all!!!!!!

The people who come to NIBROC spend their money in many different ways. Some stay in our motels and eat in our restaurants. Some shop and buy merchandise.

For goodness sake, these fine people from Letcher County are doing us a favor by telling us how we can do things better. Let's not be so whiney and defensive, and let's be receptive to suggestions and new ideas.

Bob Jr. and Bob Terrell is what corbin is all about, not the sorry slobs posting here trying to turn a constructive criticism around against the person letting us know there was a problem. Sounds like one of Carpenter's cronies or Estep's wiseguys.

This person brought to us a problem many, myself included, did not know about. Then the next poster has the gall to blame that person complaining. Typical of some of the elite in corbin that think the world rotates around them.

To the poster, I am sorry for your problems, and on behalf of corbin, I apologize emphatically.  Mr. Terrell said it all.

Our chamber of commerce has distanced themselves from the people they serve, and they have become self-serving to their own little circle of friends.  Hopefully, in the near future, a new regime will be in place and this will not happen.

I know it's hard not to judge a town by the actions of a few, but, we're not all like that. Please come again.

NIBROC WAS BEST EVER!!  iF THATS ALL YOU HAVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IS A VOLUNTEER, THEN IT MUST HAVE BEEN A GREAT TIME.  the people of corbin were very nice the entire week.  I have heard only great things from the people in town today.

yes i have only heard great things about all the volunteers!  Sorry for your experience but I am sure they were just trying to keep order.  With that many people and that hot, its going to happen.  We hope you will except our appology and come again.  the people in corbin are truly the nicest around.  The chamber puts on a great event.

Correct and well said, this sounds like Sams & Bowling, always blaming things on a conspiracy, never coming up with Value Added Solutions and always wanting to Argue rather than listen and formulate a good game plan.

Bob Jr, responded the way the City should have, but did not. Sams represents the City and reflects back on our government. Thank goodness for people that can clearly state our apologies and hopefully bring these people back to spend money and time within our city.

Mayor Mcburney, surely the city can improve the caliber of folks who are running this show. One last thought, Bruce, do yourself a big favor and find something to do for Sams & Bowling to do as their hurting you badly and the hard work you and the other good folks have put into these efforts for many years!!!

I just want to say that the Volunteers around me were very nice.  They especially went out of their way to take care of the handicap people.  They had their own little section in the front.  The volunteers made sure no one got in front of them and also provided them with water.  The workers near my seat, went out of their way to help the people.  I think they did a great job.  The people of Corbin I just want you to know how much I appreciate the FREE concert.  It was great.  Thank you!!!!!!!

BT, all anyone has to do is read all of the above posts - the good, the bad and the ugly. The people that post this Middle School mentality stuff like the post above expose themselves everytime they type.

Keep up the good work, 99.9% of us appreciate it.

That's funny that you say this... did you sign your name!?  I always see Bob Jr. and Sr. signing there name. Bob Jr. and Sr. are good people that are making a huge difference in our community, along with others. Some may try to stop them but they are doing what they do for the GOOD of our community.  I don't understand the few negative comments that are given to them. Bob Jr. said it right to the person commenting on her experience in our area, why cut her words? She was speaking her mind and she was telling all what goes on 'in the back'.  If you asked the administrator to remove this thread then he'd have to remove all of them!! Now that wouldn't be fare, now would it?

Bob was polite, tackful and understanding. He was apoligizing for SOMEONE else and someone has the ignorance to 'cut him' with negative comments. Shoot.. you must be the writer of the negative words typed out here. This is a place to post comments so other's can be aware of what's going on in our area, our idea's and points of view. Why is it that the couple of bullies posting nothing nice.

I personally think that Bob Jr. is doing an outstanding job and those 'few' that disagree with my opinion must have some personal issues that they need to deal with personally and stop all these negative comments. Take the good comments and the bad and learn from them. This is what this is all about!

By the way, who is 'Bobby'? Is that you Bob? I thought only your mother called you that ???  She's a good one :)
