CORBIN CHEERLEADING: NEEDS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS SPORT

MY daughter cheers, I would like for it to be recognized as a sport.  The long hours she puts in of practice, games and gymnastics is enough to be considered a sport.  After all she is an athlete.  You have to be one in order to do the gymnastics.  Please get behind these athletes and lets move cheerleading into a sport.

Who said it wasnt a sport? Dont the girls compete at some events and practice relentlessly every day...sometimes twice per day? The truth is...some of the cheerleaders are in better shape than the majority of their male counterparts.

I can tell you this, I have seen some of those Teeny Bopper Cheerleaders doing flat Push ups when touchdowns were made. I'm in pretty good shape and I don't think I could do that many.

Go Cheerleaders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Corbin's cheerleaders and sponsors all work very hard and add a lot of excitement and enthusiasm to our sports events. We appreciate them and salute them for their dedication and wonderful talent.

The last poster is correct.  The point is the KHSAA does not recognize cheerleading as a sport.  This needs to be changed.  I know everyone else knows its a sport but KHSAA.  If we ban together we can change this.

Believe me, if the cheerleaders quit doing the things they do to support all the teams and sports, we would notice it immediately.

SO, what do we need to do to help get it recognized? Write letters, that's fine, I will, tell me to whom I need to write to.

Remember, they work from august to may, and there is no break for them.

Our cheerleaders and dance team members deserve recognition and appreciation for the dedicated and talented effort they make to support our athletic programs. Year after year Corbin and many other area schools are blessed with the sponsors, coaches, cheerleaders and dance team members who do such a fine job. Thanks to all of our people involved in providing such excellent performances at our athletic events.

Next year, 2008, will be 10 years ago the CHS dance team won the national championship in New York.

I hope they're voted in the hall of fame.

That's what the hall of fame is for.

I agree. That was a great accomplishment for our community and school. We should always recognize in a special way this kind of achievement.

What is the big deal about it being recognized as a sport, would they get some additional benefit?

I'M CURIOUS ABOUT THE SMAE THING. DO THE GIRLS JUST WANT NOTORIETY AS "ATHELETES"? OR DOES THE SCHOOL OR SQUAD GET SOME BENEFIT IF THEY ARE DESIGNATED AS "ATHELETES?

Maybe we need to have a spelling contest! weirdface.gif

Perhaps the Cheerleaders and Dance Team should have their own Hall of Fame program for those who were on teams that gained excellent recognition over the past years. They could have an annual banquet and invite former cheerleaders and dance team members and their families to attend as well as other people in the community.

The Redhound Hall of Fame has some real challenges ahead now that we have so many sports. Its great to have a wide range of sports with many students involved but it will be difficult to be fair in selecting Hall of Fame Members because some sports are overlooked.

There is no question that the cheerleaders and dance team members work very hard and spend many hours practicing to provide exciting support for our teams. They deserve recognition and appreciation for their important involvement in our sports programs.

No, there are no challenges for the Varsity Club and the Hall of Fame, none at all. They need to quit putting everybody's buddies in the darn thing, for nothing. There is one in there that didn't even go to corbin, but was inducted because he was a Varsity Club member and cooked the hot dogs at the functions. Look that one up and tell me I'm wrong.

There are many cheerleaders that made all state, and went on to cheer in college that deserve to be in.

And, the 1998 CHS Dance team won the national championship, and they should be in. Not some also played tackle that now is a lawyer or doctor that can write a big check. They're putting people in now just because they went to college.

Sorry to dampen the spirits on the Cheerleaders thread, but, it needs saying.

Cheerleading is a sport. Try it sometime.

No Question Cheerleading is a Sport, but, as several post back stated the Criteria has to be defined. This always takes time and should be well thought out, the Criteria should be written to encompass the future and the many Atheletes, and Supporters that give to the School System in very different ways.

This Criteria has yet to be determined, Drafted and laid out. Then last but not least made official. I am hearing different rumblings of other Clubs that will form who may have already established a Charter, written Criteria and will appear in the very near future. The Varsity Club has been great for the area but not changeing to meet the future requirements may be it's final down fall.

Look for Competition in the very near future as the Varsity Club will not be the only game in town.

Stay Tuned

The cheerleaders are athletes but what good does it do to have them designated as such. Would they receive some kind of benefit? Certainly the School would benefit for purposes of Title 9. But what good does this do the girls? Would you be seeking money from the School or the Varsity Club? Is this a money search?

So what if it is a money search. Give them their share.

Someone who knows cheerleading tell me something. Does the school buy the letter jackets for the cheerleaders like they do for the ball teams. I don't know any cheerleader parents to ask.

I'm not slighting the Cheerleaders I'm just asking is what they gain by the School designating them as "athletes". What benefit do they gain? Why is it so important to the Cheerleader parents?

It is my opinion they want their daughters to be properly appreciated for all the hard work they do, and the degree of agility, coordination, and physical conditioning it requires to be a good cheerleader. They perform many hours, and practice many times to perfect their routines.

I may be off but this may be a KHSAA call here. To designate something a Sport in the state has to surely fall under their Guidelines, not sure this is a local call the City School systems can make.

I do believe it is a sport and the Kids give massive amounts of time an effort, but a KSHAA call.

The School can however work something that could recognize the Kids a little better!

Okay poster about cheerleading. We get your point and were sorry that cheerleading has not taken over ESPN's play of the day. Cheerleaders work hard and deserve any recognition that they get but, if you picked cheerleading as the sport to help you gain stardom, it aint gonna happen... for you way back when or  now for your daughter. You have to know when going into cheerleading that there's a "chance" that the non cheerleaders of society may not embrace you and put you in the same light as say Lebron James, A Rod, or Peyton Manning.

Let's be serious here! Yes cheering requires a lot of ability and athletic strength, but is it really a sport when the most important thing to these kids is matching their ribbons and socks with eyeshadow and lipstick. The hard truth is majority of these girls get involved in cheering at the middle school level and for what reason; mostly to get the attention of the jocks. Sad but true. Yes there are lots of benefits to being a cheerleader like scholarships, being the teachers pet and more importantly, sitting next to little Johnny Football on class trips.
Look around at the girls involved, with the acception a one or two on each squad, there is no discipline as far as athletes go and this is just another reason to wear some skimpy shorts and let people look at them.
Example: Look around at halftime the next time you are at a Redhounds basketball game. Do you see the coach giving the girls a halftime speach or telling them what to improve on at the break?
No!
They are walking around with a Coke and a smile trying to figure out where she and her sweetie are going after the game.
Also, just to give a heads up, if they want some respect, shouldn't the cheereleaders be at the team's opening home game, especially against a rivalry like Whitley County!
Just a thought!!!!

First of all, for anyone to post such a remark is crazy. You must not know anything about cheerleading and you must not have a daughter. You have no idea all the hard work that goes into cheerleading. First of all you have your own practices most days of the week and on top of that you have a football game or boys/girls basketball to get to right after practice. Let alone all the treat bags and supporting time events you must attend. On top of all that you must keep up your grades. I know as a fact that the whole cheerleading squad is in the honor roll. Now you tell me if think you could attend all the events they attend and keep very high GPA's. The most important thing cheerleaders do is definatly not just matching their bows and lipstick. It's part of the uniform. If they don't match they lose points during competition time. The majority of cheerleaders I know don't have boyfriends who are athletes. They also don't just cheer to be noticed. They cheer because they love the sport and the love their team. How hard to do think it is to make those stunts hit every single time, putting up a girl who weights almost as much as you? It's quite hard. Things aren't that easy for the girl in the air either. She must be well aware of what she's doing and she must depend on her team. Cheerleaders normally don't get scholarships. For example, a girl that just graduated went off to school to cheer and she receives no scholarships what so ever. She's probably one of the best cheerleaders to even come through Corbin High School. The reason the cheerleaders don't get yelled at during half-time is because their coach doesn't want to be embarrassed in front of everyone so she waits until after the game or the next practice when they'll get their punishment. The cheerleaders I know don't drink coke either. They all drink water. & did you ever think they weren't at Whitley's game because they were practicing their butts off for competition! I don't think so. Cheerleaders won't receive any extra benefits for being considered a sport. They just want the recognition they deserve. Next time you want to talk about people you don't know you might want to find out your facts first. Cheerleaders are VERY hard workers.
