Times Tribune Article Suggestions

I'm starting this thread based on an ad I read in the Times Tribune, saying if you had a suggestion for an article or story, to call them. I'm not big on calling, but, I thought this would be just as good if not better. I know Ms. Swindler reads this site occasionally, so, maybe she'll read it and put some of her reporters on it.

If it doesn't help, or gets out of hand on here,  Mr. Administrator just delete the thread.

Here's some things I would like to know about;

1. Follow up on the CSX coming into the city, is the problem taxes, or what.

2. Will the City Utilities Commission offer sewer service to those homes and other areas when they run the lines to Tattersall and the new elementary school.

3. Is there going to be new traffic signals installed around the new expo center during or after it's construction.

4. Status on the new center being built where the Harley dealership is going. Not about Harley, but other business's as well.  Also, when will the basic excavation be completed and building begin.

5. Is the city commission going to persue Knox county for a share of the occupational tax money for the corbin portion that is taxed. If not, why.

6. Is the new Knox Co. judge willing to talk about this, or not.

7. How does Cima, the corbin end magistrate, feel about this.

8. Any plans for a new high school in the near future.

9. Is Rick Curry selling the Depot restaurant.

10.  Is the train caboose Danny Wallen is refurbishing going to be a railroad museum.  It sure looks nice there.

11. What happened to the big scandal with the company in the old walmart building, weren't they accused of some kind of money issue or misdirection of funds.

12. Which sidewalks will be replaced next in the downtown area.

13. When is the next officer changes on the following committees, Chamber, Tourism, Econ Development.

14.  Any idea when the next nibroc planning committee will meet.. The sooner the better.  This years was great, I hope next years is bigger.

15. Will Mrs. Meyers take committee volunteers for her group, or are the ones that are listed the only ones she can have on them.

16.  How many more months until she is certified, and can do her own thing.

17.  Is it true there is an ordance now that prohibits a gas station being built, or operated, on main and kentucky streets, from the overpass to the peach corner.

These came off the top of my head, please feel free to add any to it.

I'd like to see all the committees, tourism and chamber and all the others, listed in the paper every day, with their contact numbers or email, so we can get in touch with them when needed.

The are dealing with the publics money, so they should be openly available to the public.

And, publish their meeting times, dates, and places too, so we can go to the meetings.

These are outstanding questions. If the right people answer them we will all learn much more about the way Corbin operates. If we don't get responses we should organize a group and take these questions to a City Commission meeting.

Ms. Swindler wrote another wonderful article Saturday in the Editorial Page. She gave us a glimpse of the fine job being done by Nancy Bird as a teacher at the Corbin Middle School. Ms. Swindler went to class and saw first hand the way Ms. Bird uses her experience and knowledge in helping mold the lives of our kids and helps them appreciate our history.  Thanks to Ms. Swindler.

Her article also included some remembrances that are important to small towns and that often are forgotten as one generation passes on and a new one grows up.

I look forward each week to reading her editorials and other articles. Thanks Samantha!

Here's some I would like to know about.

Publish the times and locations of the city commission meetings, and all the other committee meetings in the paper each day, under the place where the editior and publishers name is.  That way we can all know.

Put the peoples names on those committees there too. If they're going to serve the public, then put their names out there.

How do you get put on the agenda to speak at the city commission meetings, do you have to get approved ahead of the meeting?

Who appoints the chairpersons of all the committees?

Are there any limits to the number of HUD approved rental houses in the city limits.

Can the city utilities commission start taking payments for their utility deposits for new people moving in.  It shouldn't matter, add it to their bill. IF they don't pay, then cut their water off, literally.

Whats the status of the Tattersall sewer project.

Can the fire department staff its personell in 8 hour shifts, instead of 24 hour shifts.  If they did, I know they would have to hire some extra people, but, it's better than paying 16 hours of overtime to every person on duty every day of the week.  Seems there could be a better way to this. Especially in a small department like ours.  It would be different if they had runs several times a day.

Here's one.

Does our police department, and any other departments around Corbin for that matter, report the arrest of illegal immigrants, illegal aliens, to the ICE (Immigraton and Customs Enforcement) should they arrest one.

Do they check anyone that they suspect of being an illegal alien with ICE, to make sure.

And, if they have checked and found they were illegal, what is their experience with ICE in coming to pick them up and hold them as illegals.

Thank you.

Please read the Times Tribune report on yesterday's Tourism meeting. Thanks to the Times Tribune to report on the poor conduct of the Chairman.

This is for next year, but, I think the paper should put out an ad, about 3 or 4 weeks in advance of 9/11, and solicit peoples stories about where they were, what they were doing, the morning of 9/11.  Keep them short and sweet, but publish the excerts in the paper that day, 9/11.

This is a day worth remembering.

Based on Commissioner Lynch's criticism of the sidewalks, and his comments that they are not first of second class sidewalks, I would like the paper to go with him, and allow him to show us what he thinks they should look like.  This is an honest question, based on his comments in the paper at the commission meeting.

How about it Times Tribune.

Here's one for the times tribune,

What happened to the Lorene Hodge Award at the Industiral Appreciation Banquet.

No offense to Ms. Hodge but does anyone really care about that? That is like the Amos Miller award that is given out to a middle school football player. You can go overboard naming things after people. Most people have folks that like them and also folks that dislike them. I never did like the idea of naming streets, awards and even fieldhouses after people. Reminds me of the John Wayne movie Green Beret. Provo's Privy.

Naming streets is a way of creating a trail of history. Corbin has named a street for Roy Kidd, a Hall of Fame College Football Coach. Two small streets are named for the Bird family and Frank Selvy. They are key persons in Corbin's sports history.

Lorene Hodge was a long time and loyal employee of the Chamber and Industrial Commission during an important period of time. She made a small income and gave a great deal of herself for our community.  People who I trust and who witnessed her contributions made this decision to honor her and also a person each year who would receive this award for their work for our community. Do you think everything should just be numbered?  This helps us reflect the character of our area.  We should name one in memory of Colonel Sanders.

I wish the times would do a story about local grocery stores selling expired frozen meat. Twice this has happened to me and I notified the stores about it and they refuse to take it off the shelves. Do they not care about the customers?

I'm afraid to say what stores they were because I doubt that's allowed on here, but I wish the times would follow up on it. I live in Corbin so I'm not sure they would be interested.

How can you criticize our local groceries? Do you hate Corbin? You should be positive about the groceries instead of ripping them so badly.

You know, I noticed the same thing the other day but I didn't say anything to management about it. Maybe I should have.

Thanks for posting this LLM. It's really great having you on the board.

Good post! Green Beret was a great movie too.

I must say, I agree with the above post. My child won one of these awards a few years ago, and I spent a long time explaining the who's and why's and such of the award to them. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but, sometimes it gets out of hand. Similiar to the nominations for the Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

I would still like the paper to look into this Knox County Occupational tax issue.

How about a special on Ms Meyers and the Main Street Program. I would like to see a few pictures of main street along with drawings of what main street could look like after improvements are made. This might also motivate some of the main street people to get more involved with the program. The main street manager works hard and this might help to get her message out better to main street property owners.

A story on the fire department and their program for checking up on elderly citizens. Most people do not know that the fire department calls elderly people each morning that are on their list. If contact is not made then they send someone out to check up on them. This would be a great human interest story.

I agree. Streets, monuments, and schools should all be named after horses, flowers, vegetables, nuts, and insects. The history of an area is a waste of time. Why in the world did they name anything after Daniel Boone, or George Washington.  It should have been named Citation Parkway, or the Tomato Memorial.  The Lincoln Memorial should be called the Petunia Memorial, and maybe the Arlington National Cemetery should be the Cucumber National Cementery.

And nothing should be named after our local area achievers at all. Why should any of them be remembered? Communities should all  be generic and have no differences to distinguish its character, values, and talents from any other community. And we certainly don't want to have any individual creativeness to differentiate us from any other place.

All elementery schools should be called Walnut El. School, all Middle Schools Pecan Middle School, and high schools Coconut  High School. Colleges and Universities should be named after insects.  Mosquito University, Bed Bug College, Fly Vocational College, and Tick Graduate School.

I agree. Let's never be creative about those who have climbed the tall mountains of life. Let's all stay down in the valley together.

This poster is silly and always over reacts to the topic being discussed. Their answer to an upset stomach would be to fast for the rest of their life. Their solution to diarrhea would be to pucker up and never crap again. Get real!

It was great to see the Times Tribune, Bill, Samantha and others with the newspaper win so many awards this year. That was a great showing for the paper.

Samantha was lauded for three editorials and praised for her knowledge of what it takes to provide a good editorial page with well written articles on complex issues. Congratulations to the Times Tribune. You have gained some excellent recognition that also helps our community.
