RE: "I'm running the show here!" Estep says to Corbin citizens.

What some of you don't realize is that the Tourism Chairman is running the show. It is his show and you had better get used to it and accept it. There is nothing any of you are willing to say to the right people to get this crap stopped. Same thing with Carpenter. I don't think anybody has the guts to put him in his place. I hear a lot of talk but the people who make the decisions are afraid to stand up for our people. Does anyone have the fortitude to expect and demand the best for our community? Thank goodness some people stood up for Sharea. The same two characters made life hell for her the past six months. Why? Because they could not control her. They did their best to run her out of her job. Why did Bob get run out of his job? Bruce couldn't control him.

I agree to a point with you last poster, but, nothing happens fast around here.

People like Estep surround themselves with clowns to protect them, like Tipton and Bruce Carpenter, and other people in his circle of friends that has time to lobby city leaders about how great he is. They're all retired, and they have nothing else to do. He uses his church as his bully pulpit to gain support for his causes as well.

Why do you think there wasn't a quorum at the last tourism meeting? It's because of pressure not to attend. Sure there were appointments, but most were changable, and some could have made it.

Sharea and Bob are good examples of what you say. Carpenter was scared to death, and he used Becky Myers as his henchperson to get rid of Bob's dad. Then, he began to pressure Estep to get rid of Bob Jr., and he did. His next one was Sharea, and it didn't work, because there were more people behind her than he ever expected, particularly the mayor and 2 commissioners, so that was a bummer.

This will take time, and I just hope it doesn't take to long. Estep's term is up soon, so that is a blessing. He'll still do his cartoon editorials about his family and friends, and throw his barbs in here and there, but, he won't be a force to reckon with.

Patience is a virtue here, lets see what happens.

The post previous to yours did not say it was wrong for Tipton to attend the last meeting. It said he is a patsy for Estep and Carpenter.

It is a terribble mistake for the Administrator of this board to allow posters to slander people like Gregory, Farris, the Tipton's etc... These men give their time and tallent to the community and ask nothing in return. Simply because you don't agree with their consevative natures is no reason to allow their good names to be slandered.

All those people listed are public figures. They were either elected to office, or agreed to serve on a public committee, and they all answer to the taxpaying public. That's the way it is. No one that is not on these committees, or an elected official, has been mentioned. The only other catagory is if you are employeed in a management or supervisory role by the local government, or state or federal government.

If you can't stand the heat, get off the board or resign your office. Period.

No one said they weren't good men, or good people, or good christians, or good fathers or husbands. People are only talking about their service in public office or on public boards. In those respects, they are suseptible to the publics criticisims and questions.

I think if you spend a very brief time on this board you will find that there are some people who aren't public officials who are bashed. You will also find that some of the attacks on people like Estep, Carpenter and Tipton are very personal and nasty.

When they volunteered to serve on a public board, the put themselves on display for he public. It's forum's like this that has given a new voice to the people, no matter which way they choose to go.

Before, they all thought they were loved and admired by all, as the only criticism they got was a very few walk up complaints.

Now, the field is wide open.

Is Tipton a "clown or patsy" because he didnt vote to waste money on some goofy looking but expensive toy trains to be scattered up and down the sidewalks of Corbin? maybe he actually thought about how they would look several weeks or months from now when they are littered with cracks, chewing gum, and painted up with someone's girlfriends' name on them?  There are much better ways to spend tax money...maybe a fund could be established that would work as a low interest loan guarantee for businesses who would re-model their storefronts to a new uniform facade or we could continue to do nothing and the store fronts will eventually keep crumbling away. If having some trains on the sidewalks are that important to a few people, why not approach CSX about them paying for them in exchange for putting CSX colors and logos on them. Insert your better idea here...

There is always going to be differences of opinion between people. One way of looking at all of this is that Corbin is fortunate to have so many people involved in its city government. Just two or three years ago the city had no money and a web contract, a main street program, new sidewalks, incentives, bridge repairs, a skateboard park or an art project would have all probably been out of the question. Something must have been done right for that to be turned around because these days there is something new coming up all the time.

The previous post is correct. The city is flush with money and didn't even raise taxes. We have a bright city commission and tourism commission. We have the money for projects because of a conservative commission.

Didn't raise taxes, are you crazy.

You have the occupational tax, that although the city didn't pass on itself, they collect it from whitley county, which taxed us to get their tails out of the red. They just give us 75% of the corbin city taxes.

And he restaurant tax, that's a 3% tax on any food bought in the city limits.

The Poster two up must be skipping through the Land Of Oz, between the Occupational Tax & Rest. Tax these are the Largest two tax's Increases in the History of the County, the Poor folks on the Knox County side pay Occupational Tax also, including the Trademart and all of the Business's located there.

And oh by the way, the City Of Corbin has not recieved a single PENNY in 8 Years and Millions of Dollars in Tax's to Barbourville but yet our Citizens are paying this Tax.

Any City can get into the black easily if their willing to Tax their citizens to a pulp, and all in one of the Poorest Area's in the entire nation!!!!!

No the poster is not crazy. Whitley County got the occupational tax going. Not Corbin. The county does send 75% to the city but it wasn't anything that Whitley County wanted to do. If the city had not stayed on top of it Whitley County would have had it all? Maybe Corbin will take another look at this issue some day and collect the entire 1% tax.

OK tax poster, which is it? You must just be a complainer. You blast Corbin for not collecting the tax from Knox County and then you say that any City can get into the black easily if they are willing to Tax their citizens. Which is it? Which do you prefer?

This isn't the poster you addressed, but, are you serious.

Knox county passed the occu tax, and we've done nothing. NOTHING!!!, to get our share. Is the city and the commission afraid of barbourville and knox county. They must be. I hope next election some candidate just promises to make a motion to sue knox county to get our share, and they'll get a ton of votes.

And the whitley tax was passed just to get those future criminials out of their budget mess that they themselves got into, and we did get our share of that, and rightfully so.

The restaurant tax, well that's another thing. It's a good/bad thing, just depends on which side of the fence your're on.

I wonder if the citizens of corbin, acting as a class action type of lawsuit, could hire David O Smith, and sue the city commissioners and mayor for not trying to get our share of Knox County's occu tax? Maybe that would make them get off the pot and do something about it.

Millions?

Thats a joke!

Plus those are the same "poor tax payers" that keep voting in a magistrate that will not work with the mayor to resolve the Knox tax issue.

Does anybody know?

Good question. The county line is Lynn Camp Creek. The boundaries are erratic, as is all of the city limits boundaries.

The biggest influxe of voters is the chapel house area. There are a lot of absentee voting ballots that come out of that complex. I know that for a fact, as I worked that area in voter assistance one year not too long ago. They had a list of all those that lived there that wanted absentee ballots, and there were many.

Is Cima still the magistrate for the corbin end district?

There's a lot of occupational tax money on the knox county side of corbin. All of the shopping center, the chapel house staff, with many RN's, LPN's and such not to mention the administrators, the fasat food joints have a big net profit tax, the pearson (or whatever the are now), Pickard Chrysler, K-Mart, a lot of retail.

yes, that should all be ours, all of it. Not 75%. But, I guess we'll have to settle for that now, or even less

I don't believe Don runs the show any more. I believe the other members of the Tourism Commission are going to do what is right. I don't believe Tipton will just be a puppet to a man who claims "it is his show, and you had better leave the table. This meeting is over." And you can't tell me Malissa Shelton, Suzie Rasmus, Sudhir Patil, and Steve McBurney will just follow Don like a bunch of blind mice. If they stand up to this control boss they will be respected across this community. If they follow his lead and chop off a website that is hiqh quality and highly respected they will show that Don is still running "his show". We will find out soon whether they are puppetts or independent and strong leaders.

You could be very right.

Suze is fed up and embarassed by the whole thing, as is Missy and Steve.

I wonder if Tipton thinks he's hitched onto a runaway train, and is waiting for it to derail.

Tipton is a good person, and cares about the town. I think he'll put his political considerations aside, and his loyalty to Terry Forcht, and vote the right thing here. If not, it'll surprise me.

Missy, Steve and Suze will do the right thing too.

But, we'll just have to wait and see.

Estep goes out next year. They could table it till he's gone. Wouldn't surprise me if Forcht finds a new editor soon.

Its is pitiful how a couple of people try to micromanage local government through this message board. I guess its all they have left in life.

Face the facts. The web deal is dead because the tourism members realize they are wasting a bunch of money on what amounts to welfare for one man.

I agree with the post that said he didn't believe it was only Don's show. I believe the Tourism Board members are sick of that kind of leadership. This last post was insulting and it is easy to recognize it comes from one of a few people who like to lambast the Terrells with the words of hate. All that does is get many of us stronger as their supporters.
