This idea came from a small town in North Carolina I visited, as well as the Cumberland Falls.
I call it "Walk Corbin", because that's what you do.
You pick a starting point, such as the Chamber of Commerce building, and map out various routes to walk around corbin, round trip, and the mileage it encompasses.
Designate each route, A thru Z, or name them, and post their directions. You could have a permanent signboard with the directions, mounted somewhere around the chamber building. Also, you could print up paper copies for folks that may not be familiar with our streets, and put them in one of those little containers the realtors use, when showing the specifications of a house they are listing.
Some examples:
Route A: Up first st to main st, turn left, continue until you get to 18th st (Peach Corner) and reverse your route. Distance- 1.8 miles
Route B: Up first, turn right on main, continue to overpass, on to Hart Funeral Home, reverse route. Distance- 2.3 miles
Route B: Up first, cross main, cross Kentucky to Poplar St., turn left, continue to 5th st, turn right, continue until sidewalk ends, and reverse route. Distance- 2.6 miles.
There is no end to the possibilities.
We could even create a log book sort of thing, and folks could register as using the "Walk Corbin" routes, and they could publish their milage during the year. Of course, they could use a nickname or something if they didn't want to use their own.
I like it!!! I love to jog, and my wife loves to walk. Just imagine how much fun this would be if people got into this. Kinda like lexington. Seeing people walking and visiting with neighbors and meeting new people. Great idea... We have new sidewalks, and there is a walking trail beside Lynn Camp creek...
"Walk Corbin" - what a great idea. I wish you would post your name so we know who to thank. We could occasionally start and end at one of our downtown restaurants, bring some additional business to The Dixie, the Depot, Seasons when it opens, Pizza and Company, the Beanery (if we can convince my friends to reopen), or other establishment. The weather is getting to be ideal for downtown/neighborhood walks.
Let's see if we can organize this on here. The person who came up with this great idea, if you could do the honors of posting the first date, time and route, I'm in, and anyone interested can just post a reply to the thread - name or no name.
The route board could be as simple as the type used down at the boat ramps, plywood with corkboard, some plexiglass to protect it, and a little pitched roof over it to keep the rain or snow off.
The cost would be minimal, we could ask the high school shop class to build it. I'd say $150 would do it.
Parking is no problem, as you have those huge lots down by the chamber.
This is a cool idea. I "walked" Jack Kerouac's life in Lowell, MA, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Although it highlighted his life, the town also was well-shown. Maybe incorporate the former homes, businesses, etc., of those who have made their mark in life.

This is a awesome plan and idea. I will donate the plexiglass for the board. Just let me know the size needed and where to send it.
I see this as being great use of our public facilities, not to mention the health benefits involved. ( If we dont get too stuffed afterwards at the restaurants ) Hey Bob Jr, is the first after-walk dinner on you? lol
There's a small town in Tennessee that might have the idea you are seeking. Near the downtown area is a very small park, about the size of one or two square city blocks. Constructed in this park is a "walk a mile" built of blacktop. It is about four or five feet wide (three people could walk side by side). The sidewalk zigzags back and forth through the park. When you have gone from beginning to end, you have walked a full mile. I'm sure Corbin has a location within the city limits where the same could be built. There would be no fear of traffic or anything that would put a child or grownup in danger. A good place for daily walking exercise. It works for that small town which is much smaller than Corbin. Why wouldn't it work in Corbin, especially if funding is a problem?

Hey A.J. - No prob, I got the first walk from the Root Beer Stand, you got the second walk from the Depot...
I was thinking more along the lines of my walk ending at Mcdonalds for milkshakes! There goes my health benefit of this " walk corbin " event. I hope there will be some medical personnel involved in this walk.
I'm sure there are enough card carrying CPR people out there. LOL
My intent was to begin at the Chamber of Comm. building, and walk out to a point and back, almost like a club. The things you've mentioned are fantastic, and really make it sound fun and truly community spirited. It could almost get to be a club-like thing, but mainly to promote people getting out to walk for their health.
I drove some of the routes last night, and was thinking we could get small signs made, to put up at the designated turn around spots, and even have some others that show 1/8, 1/2, 3/4 distances, or whatever they decide.
I talked to one vendor, and "official" "Walk Corbin" T-shirts could be made very reasonably. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but, you got to think ahead.
Another route that would be a nice route, is from the Chamber, up to main, turn left, stay on the left side of the street, and you can walk all the way out to Pennington Block on sidewalks. I've done this one, and it's a hump, but it's all flat. The return trip has a little down hill to it at the city utilities building.

I walked today, and had some extra time to kill, so I did a little driving. I used the trip odometer on the car to measure some routes. They're not exact to the foot, but, very close.
A. Chamber up 1st st to kentucky, turn left, continue to hospital red light. 2.5 miles
B. Chamber, up 1st to main, turn right on main, to Souther States (Save Rite Pharmacy) 1.1 mile
C. Chamber, up 1st st to main, turn left on main, stay on left side of street : to one way split island .7 miles : to Peach Corner Light 1.1 miles : to Pennington Block 1.8 miles
D. Chamber to main, right on main, up to gordon turn left, up to kentucky and turn left, continue to one way split island, and back to 1st st. 1.6 miles
E. Chamber, continue down Depot st to 5th st., up 5th to end of sidewalk (Old Eaton & Gibbs bldg) 1 mile.
F. Chamber, up 1st, cross main, cross kentucky, to poplar st, turn left, down to 7th st., right on 7th, up 7th to top of 7th st hill (there is sidewalks up that far now). I chose this as it is much more scenic than walking down Depot to 7th. 1 mile.
There's many more routes, with many variations. It's just a good walk downtown no matter where you walk.
Bear with me! Since I don't know how to start a new Topic, I just grabbed one to get started. I lost my screen before completing my message regarding the old rusty bridge, I'll give it another try. For years, I have wondered when the city of Corbin is going to restore the use of the old bridge at the end of Engineer Street. That's one of the first things tourists see when they drive into Corbin, an eyesorer. It is probably the only thing left in Corbin that could be considered of historic value. The railroad depot is gone, the wonderful Arden and Wilber hotels, the vintage churches, the Krystal Kitchen, YMCA building, the old post office where we all bought five-cent stamps, and above all, the Hippodrome Theater. The Hipp was a beautiful theater and held lots of memories for many of us. If only it could have been saved! There are other sites that could be named. You have to be getting up in years to remember all of these places, but my point is, in traveling, the most visited cities are those where they have preserved their history. Corbin isn't that old, but it did have many sites worth being preserved. For goodness sakes, folks, please don't let the Edwards Gymnasium deteriorate any more than it already has. It looks terrible on the outside. It needs a good scrubbing. I haven't seen inside in years. I am sure there are ghosts from the past in that building. Back to the old rusty bridge. It is an item worth saving. There are enough grounds around it for a small inner-city park. It could be a walking bridge, and what a wonderful place to take your children for walks. Think of Easter egg hunts, etc. There must be landscapers/architects, etc., willing to volunteer their talents toward reviving the bridge. Clean up the creek, do a bit of landscaping, and you will have a piece of history worth bragging about. The local garden clubs could be responsible for upkeep of the flowers and vegetation. What better project could there be for people who are interested in historic preservation. I have waited years to see the bridge brought back to life. Am I the only person who has thought of this? Anyone else think it is a good idea??
Walk Corbin. That is a neat name. And a good idea too.
Especially for people who have to drive to get here like Terrell and Carr.
Many who live in the city limits have been Walking Corbin for years.
Why don't you go back to watching your Wild, Wild West reruns where they run off the "Outsiders" and let the rest of us live in peace and harmony with our brothers and sisters, whether they live on Gordon Hill or in Louisville.
We're talking about a walk here, not a vote for King of the playground.
I agree, great idea to have this walk, would be a lot of fun, if we can get rid of the haters we'll move forward as a city.
I doubt that the poster has a problem with "outsiders" as you say. You are the only one who used that term. But it is funny how so many people who choose to not live in the city want to take a leadership role in city government.

It truely amazes me how someone can take something as simple as a walk in town with friends and turn it into some sort of political threat.
A leadership role in City Government? Are you kidding? We're talking about a 2 mile walk with friends. Your insecurity is radiating through this forum.
Also, leadership involves actions and accomplishments, not a job title, political title or where you live.

Good God, we have some people here who are awfully worried about getting credit, or really, someone else getting credit, for anything. I agree - a leadership role, to talk about a group walk through Corbin? It's a great idea, and the person who posted it obviously doesn't care about getting credit, they just wanted to do something positive and enjoy their friends and the city. Bob Terrell Jr. and AJ Carr commend the poster, but you have to take it and beat it with a stick
If you or who you are worried for are such great leaders, why didn't you come up with the idea before? It is soooo obvious there are a few people who live for a pat on the back, that they are that worried that someone else might have a good idea and steal their thunder. They can't say "Great Idea" and just participate, they have to shot them down.
Well.. this subject has certainly changed since I last logged in! So that there is no confusion with anyone, let me say that there is absolutely no chance or worry of me wanting a public office anywhere! Period! I thought we were discussing a community walk, not a campaign agenda. I only wished to say that I felt this was a good idea, and I would offer support for this project. Yes its true, I dont live in the city limits, however, I love this small town and all it has to offer, and am proud to say I am from Corbin. The city limit sign is not the end point for our community. I believe in our community and region, which includes the goverments and leaders that preside over them, the individuals who live in it, the businessess that operate in it, the school systems that teaches in it, and the churches that offer faith for it. Our community and our region is awesome. Sure, we have pitfalls, but who dont! I believe our character is determined by the way we handle adversity. Corbin, London, Williamsburg, Barbourville... they are all works in progress. Thats what makes it special. Everyone has opinions and the right to express them, however they feel. This forum is a good example of that. I believe in the inalienable right to free speech, along with the rest of our constitution. Speak up, its your right as an American to do that. I dont see the point in badgering individuals or leaders in our community, but if people feel disappointed or disinfranchised, Speak Up! If someone does not agree with my position on something, so what. I wont comprimise my character for someone else, and I dont think anyone should for me.
Walk Corbin is a great idea, and regardless, where you live, do business, send your kids to school, what color your skin is, or what church you go to or dont, should not be a deciding factor as to participating in this event. If you enjoy walking, or just want to network with other people, get involved. There is alot going on around us that is making this a great place, but there is so much more that can be done if more people just decided to get involved and make a difference. Coming together is a begining, staying together is progress, but working together is true Success. I dont need another job, or leadership role... What I really need is a Walk. I have found when I walk, I get the chance to think clearly, plan for what comes next in my life, and enjoy not having to hurry.... Im not a fast walker, so for once I get to dicatate the speed of what I am doing. I apologize for such a long post, but I hope this will clear any ill concieved notion that I want anything more than to..... Walk Corbin!
Very well said, AJ!!! Also, just wanted to say there are alot of people pulling for you with the Harley Dealership!! You are showing yourself to be a leader and a positive person in the community, which is what our area needs! Walk Corbin is a great idea, also!
Thanks, AJ, for your post. I'd love to join in with Walk Corbin but with 3 young sons, it won't be happening for me. It would be awesome to see groups of Corbinites (and I use that term loosely meaning anyone who wants to walk) getting out and enjoying our town. And even better if perhaps a few would be willing to pick up a few pieces of garbage on their way, every little bit helps!!!
I join with you in wishing AJ Carr and Steve Brock the best of legal luck in their business endeavor. They had a great idea for a development and I am hopeful that it can be accomplished.
The Walk Corbin idea is good too even though there have been a few colorful exchanges above. I think that many people already use downtown Corbin as a walking track but this might could add a bit extra. Walk Corbin would be one of the many benefits of living in town.
Thank you guys for the support and well wishes. While I cannot comment on the Harley Dealership, I will say the construction for Ridgeview Commons is ahead of schedule, and we are working diligently with other clients. This Walk Corbin is a great idea, and with all that I am doing, its a great change in my current work load. I look forward to this, so please keep up the progress and let me know when we can start!
