RE: Tourism Chairman "Not A Corbin Citizen!"

The commitees work very well. Everything was fine with boards and committees until one man couldn't get along with the board that hired him.

Really, I believe it is only one person on the board that can't get along, not the entire board. It's just that this is the first time that the chairman of that board has ever been challenged, and the chairman lost the battle.

This poster has legitimate question abut A J Carr can't serve because he lives outside city but is developing land in Corbin City!  what happened to post who also brought up question on adult children who live with their parents and don't pay a penny in taxes but are on some of these committees.  What a joke.  They shouldn't be allowed on committees either.

Once Again

You will never ever ever ever convince people living in the City, paying City Tax's on everything they own, then seeing others who they know do not live in the City spend their Tax Dollars!!

We have dozens of great folks from everywhere who owns or invests in our fine city, they in return have also made good money as they are due a good ROI from a great area.

The Point here, and to keep things clean would to have the Mayor or The City Commission put their stamp on any Tax payer Money that is moved around. This has absolutley nothing what so ever to do with ALL the great folks who own property now, have invested in the city, live outside the city and or have grown up in the city, their all SUPER people and the city is thankful for the involvement and we certainly need ALL the advice we can get to compete for critical jobs in the next 10-20 years.

BUT, to keep things clean the Mayor or Commisison should have their stamp of approval required, as they are Elected by the Tax Payers, who in the end actually own the city and are the ones Liable for bad Business as Well as the Good!

Sorry Don

I believe their are laws against the commission having such control - sorry!  Just like each commissioner should head a committee.  Good idea but it doesn't work.  Talk about getting in put for tax dollars.  If the mayor and commissioner controlled everything the people would not have a voice.  Yes a voice when it comes to elections, but we all know they make promises during the election that they never keep.

I agree with 2 up.  The mayor and commission should approve any expenditure of city tax monies. You'd have to show me the law to convince me otherwise.

That's the whole problem with this issue, no city citizen control.  Yes, there's good folks out there that doesn't live in the city that does a good job, but, it's city money versus county money.

Teamwork and the Ossie Burch Fieldhouse

I am not suggesting anyone who should or should not be on any commissions, boards, or other activities. I would like to see us get beyone this "in the city or out of the city" issue.

I returned to Corbin Dec. 1997 and was soon asked to be Chairman of Fund Raising for the Ossie Burch Fieldhouse project. Nobody said, "Bob doesn't live in the city so he shouldn't work on this project" When we started seeking gifts we didn't say "let's not accept any gifts from people who live outside the city."

I understand why people who live in the city want to have great involvment in the business of Corbin. They should be involved. However, we would not have the Ossie Burch Fieldhouse at Corbin High School if a lot of money had not come from people who live outside Corbin. Many donors lived many miles from Corbin. The following is a summary:

Total Individual Donors 136
Total Donors who live inside Corbin 66
Total Donors who live outside Corbin 70

memo: Total Donors who live in other states 35
Total Donors living in Kentucky outside KY 35

Total Business, Civic Clug, Physicians, Banks Lodge 50
Total from inside City 40
Total from outside City 10

Total number of givers 186
From outside city 80
From inside city 108

40% of the cash/check dollars came from outside Corbin

Donor gifts from people in other states 35
Ohio, 7, Georgia 2, Illinois 1, Tennessee 3, Florida 8, Virginia 3, South Carolina 2, Indiana 2, Oklahoma 1, Michigan 2, North Carolina 2, Texas 1, and Arizona 1. 35 donors from 13 states outside Kentucky

We realize more of our citizens participated than these numbers because our Lions, Kiwanis, and Rotary Clubs and our Masonic Lodge gave sizeable gifts from many members and friends.

I will close with a remembrance of Coach Burch. We took Coach Burch in his wheelchair through the near finished facility several weeks before it was finished. He was very ill but he perked up when we took him through each room. A few weeks later seven of us who were members of his 1949 Football team and the 1950 basketball team went to the ICU at Barbourville Hospital. We gathered around his bed for our last time with him. He regained consciousness shook each of our hands, smiled, and called out each of our names. ( Tommy Adkins, Tennessee, Bob Barton, Corbin, Jerry Brooks, Cincinnati, Roy Kidd, Richmond, Jerry Bird, Corbin, and Bob Terrell. I thought I was part of Corbin but have found out I really don't live in Corbin. We all had tears in our eyes as we left.

The Ossie Burch Fieldhouse is a valuable resource for our students. The people from all over who made it possible are loyal to our community. This is what makes Corbin special. There is a sense of belonging to your hometown regardless of where you may live.

Bob Terrell, Sr.

No one wants to address the real topic here on this board. Its about the Tourism not living in city limits. What about the questions above? No one seems to want to address these issues. Also we have several commissioners with family ties on the boards. What about conflict of interest here?

I did not get the joke I guess but I do think that everyone should have the freedom to post on this board. There is no need to make people sign up or to ban people and limit who is allowed to comment. Come on Bob, you are bigger than this, lighten up on people and let them post.

So everyone should have the "freedom" to post on a "privately owned" board. Tell you what mister "freedom", why don't you send Bob a check for say $50, to help him pay the fees for this boards royalty that he has to pay monthly, and then you can talk.

You people think this is a freebie here. This board costs monthly, and you pay nothing.

Are you talking about a "privately owned" message board that just happens to go by the name of "Corbin, Kentucky"? What gives the Terrells the "freedom" to have what appears to be an official site and then use it only to further their political views and ban those who don't agree? Call this message board "Bob Terrell Jr" or "The Terrells" or "Terrell And Son" and nobody would give it a second look.

Hey, if you don't like it, then why are you on here? I'll tell you why, because it's the best thing in town to post your opinions on. You must be one of the Carpenter/Estep cronies.

Corbin Kentucky is not a trademark, thats why you can use it in any way you wish. That's why many business's call themselves Corbin
