The last post is nonsense. I have lived here for over 15 years and the voice of the voters in Corbin has always been heard. How else was the restaurant referendum voted in? Why do you think that mayor McBurney got so many votes? And  mayor pro-tem Gregory too for that matter? The people vote and their voices are heard.

I AGREE WITH THE PERSON THAT SAID THAT THIS SITE IS GOOD. I ALSO AGREE. THE VOTER'S VOTES GET COUNTED BUT THEIR VOICES ARE MUTE TO A DEAF EAR. VOTING ON RESTAURANT REFERENDUM IS WANTED BY THE CITY LEADER'S ALSO. WE DO GET TIRED OF GOING OUT OF TOWN FOR A GOOD MEAL. (I KNOW I DO!)

IF THE VOICES WERE HEARD MORE WOULD HAVE CHANGED BUT WE SEEM TO BE AT A SNAILS PACE........... AGAIN, OUT VOTES ARE COUNTED ( HOPEFULLY RIGHT THIS LAST TIME)!

Tearing Corbin apart, I see it the other way around.

This site gives ALL of corbin a voice. ALL OF CORBIN.

Not just the few special people, but everyone.

I hear about this site all over town, and believe me, I'm all over town every week.

More people are finding out about the way things work, who tries to control what goes on, who makes decisions, and so on and so forth.

And it's the people who vote. For example, the ones that voted in alcohol sales because they couldn't figure out why, in the 21st century, you couldn't buy a beer in the city of corbin, decided to get up and go vote for it, and they won. The church crowds that though they had it in the bag to vote it down, found out they aren't the majority in this town, that you can go to church, and worship god, and pray, and also drink a beer while watching a ballgame and you won't go to hell. That's just one example. Oh, and I use the alcohol sales example because it's the biggest thing to happen to corbin and this region in years.

This is the first time our city leaders and city commitee members have had to listen to comments from people that don't agree with them. They've never had this before in corbin. They always thought they spoke for everyone, but they found out they didn't.

Tearing us apart, no, sorry, this is just starting to bring us together.

I agree. The ones who don't like it don't want people giving their opinions. They just want people to be quiet and have no voice in our community.

The point is that the people of Corbin have always had a voice. This message board just gives complainers an anonymous voice much like the VC of the Vietnam War days. They take a few anonymous pot shots at the troops and then slip into the cover of the night jungle only to emerge the next morning as a local villager. This board only provides cover to hide behind. The voice has always been there. Most of those who think this board is such a great thing don't have the nerve to say anything in public.

Is that last post for real,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,go take out your dvd of Full Metal Jacket and get out of the house previous poster. You must have been 4F.

I notice you talk the talk of speaking out, but you don't walk the walk of telling us who you are.

VC my big ol butt.

That poster was right. This board is like the VC tunnel system. Pop up somewhere, fire off a few rounds and then go back down under. Good analogy.

Not 4F but there are a bunch of people out there who served stateside in the military, got a job and then learned how to get disability from their employer.

I know some local people that fit that bill. To hear them talk though you think they were dodging bullets in 'Nam.

I would not say this website is tearing the town apart or anything. The few people I know that actually look at it consider it somewhat of a joke. They just figure most of the messages come from a couple people who have a hard time getting along with others or who have vendettas.

Nobody takes it serious enough for it to split the town.

After reading many of the posts on here the last couple of days, it sure does seem like the community is split apart. Maybe this board is partly to blame.

This board gives us a chance to express our opinions, just like it gave the post above a chance to post his or her opinions. Good ideas have come off this board. Perhaps the pressure raised on this board is having Vangent and our city officials try to work things out for them to stay in Corbin.  The Knox County Fiscal Court is partly to blame for Vangent's unhappiness. When they expanded just over two years ago there was an article in the papers that the Assistant Judge said, " we will not go along with the State's incentive program because we would lose occupational taxes."  On the 350 jobs Pearson had at that time, (Vantage is the new name) Knox county would not have given up any occupational tax.  On the 150 new jobs in expansion they would give up part of the new occupational taxes they were not at that time receiving. The State and Corbin's Industrial Commission convinced them to participate.

Isn't it better for the people to know what is going on instead of being left in the dark? How can we ever get any better if we don't know what we must work on?

Do you remember what a terrible time it was when American Greetings Closed their plant? Laurel County did a pitiful job trying to get them to stay. This plant closing was a terrible event for our area.

We have to stand up for ourselves and the future of our children and grandchildren.

I hear Vangent is a cruddy place to work. Low pay, terrible benefits and a very bad environment. Might as well try to get a chicken plucking factory to locate here if we are going to settle for businesses like them. Jobs like that are OK for people who are desparate, but that's not really what we are looking for.

Vangent may not be the best place to work - I don't have any personal knowledge. But it beat no job at all. They employ a lot of unskilled workers who are unable to obtain better paying jobs - especially skilled jobs. Poster may not understand the need for the unskilled job market.

Another empty post with no facts. Sounds like a weak minded response, like someone trying to cover a buddy's or their own rear end.

Give specifics. I know they pay better than minimum wage, I know people making $11 to $12 an hour, and any health benefits are better than none at all.

Well said. There are lots of people in this town and surrounding area who would love to make $11-$12 an hr. for unskilled labor. Sounds like good pay to me.

They pay what they have to to get away with it. That's why they locate to rural areas like this one. The government contract is for one amount, and they have to stay within it. If they located somewhere that he base wages for the area were higher, they would have to pay more for employees and it would eat into their profits, for the contracted company. I'm talking about Vangent.
