It would be interesting to see the old Corbin movies in the shopping center remodeled. Obviously it wouldn't compete with the new cineplex in regards to new releases, but it could be a project like the Kentucky Theatre in Lexington, which gets limited-release films and also re-plays older movies, in addition to live music like the woodsongs shows. Didn't Corbin used to have a hippodrome, or a 3d movie theatre around somewhere? I'm sure it would be a big risk to make a profit, but it seems like theres enough cinema history to take the risk.
Hi Levi. It would be interesting to see if someone would be interested in the old movie theater. The Hippodrome was a movie theatre downtown and it would have been a good venue for a restoration like the Kentucky Theatre because it had a stage and a balcony so you could have had live events as well as old movies. In fact, they used to have an occasional concert there.
I don't know if the Trademark Theaters could be adapted in quite the same way, but there is definitely arts money out there for entrepreneurs who would want to repurpose an old theater, particularly in the area of showcasing original music and plays. Just a thought.
I lived in Orlando a while back and there was a theater there called the Enzian. There you could see independent films and occasional film festivals--it was very alternative. This is good if you can gear it toward our market. Not so much all one style, but a good mix of alternative, oldies, kids or family interests and also local interests. It would be an asset to our community. I'm thrilled that we have an up-to-date facility in the Tri-Co. Cineplex, but there's also a market for films other than mainstream. I don't know much about the process, but I would love to look into what it takes to get something like this up and running. Anyone know what is involved??
