RE: Halloween 2007 event on Wednesday

Shutting down Main Street was a little overboard. It was annoying. We have nice, wide sidewalks after all. Very bad decision. A couple of commissioners told me the Main Street Manager did this without authorization. They need to get her under control.

Some people don't want anything to change. Those commissioners are the same ones who oppose anything that is differerent than it was when they were small children.  When a community like Corbin dares to try to do things to make the Halloween experience safer, and more fun for the children of our area the stuck in the mud group gets all agitated.  We are going to get our butts kicked on getting jobs, on building up our downtown area, and on our quality of life if we don't realize that the world is changing and we need to be innovative in our thinking and actions.

Thanks for creativity to help the children of the area have safe, enjoyable fun!

Nice wide sidewalks? You must live in London. A couple of commissioners? I would say 1 at the most and he usually has a problem with everything, and no, they don't need to do anything except let her do the job she was hired to do.

Believe me, no one shuts down main street without the mayor, police chief, city manager, and the street dept knowing about it before hand, and I am directly in the loop every time it is done. So, this poster is a flat out LIAR.

Very, very good decision to close Main Street with well over 1000 kids on Main Street I felt much safer letting the kids enjoy themselves. It should have been closed in past years. Sorry you were annoyed, but I'll take kids safety over getting you through town 5 minutes faster any day of the week.

Lets not overdue the number of kids! Ask the city girls they will tell you 400 kids.

You obviously were not there, because the sidewalks were absolutely packed at a stand still at times with kids from about Hardee's all the way down main, and back up the loop. But, more importantly, why are you trying to take away from the success of a simple trick or treat?? It really shows your pettiness. And if you have small children, especially more than one, you would realize how hard it is and how unsafe you feel with cars zipping down the street.

iTS AMAZING THAT ANYTHING CONNCECTED TO THE MAIN STREET PROGRAM NEVER GETS SLAMMED ON THIS WEB SITE! aS SOMEONE MENTIONED IT TO ME THIS WEEK. I HAVE SINCE BEEN READING THESE POST THRU TO SEE JUST WHO GETS SLAMMED AND WHO DOESN'T. IT IS A VERY INTERESTING TOPIC. READ AND SEE FOR YOUR SELF AND THEN MAKE YOUR JUDGEMENT.

oNE NOTE: CLOSING THE MAIN STREET YESTERDAY RIGHT DURING THE BUSIEST TIME WHEN SCHOOL WAS LETTING OUT WAS VERY CONFUSING AND AS I REMEMBER PEOPLE IN TOWN DIDN'T LIKE CLOSING MAIN STREET FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES WHEN SCHOOL IS IN SESSION!

I don't think anyone was really questioning the job the city did on the trick or treat. I think the question is here! Why only certain functions get slammed while other can do no wrong!
But while I am on I do have one suggestion.
The down town trick or treat could be held on a different day then the door to door. The downtown activity could be from 4 to 6. This way the school children can go home first.Aslo, it would not be when school let out. I think it is too much for kids to do both on same day. My kids had a hard time doing both and getting up for school the next day.

Maggie J's did a head count and at 4:30pm it was well over 1100, and the trick or treating ended at 5pm. Also, the city girls were not seen by anyone, were definately not at the parade or custume contest.

What do you mean "let's not overdue the number of kids!" What are you talking about, "overdue"?

Ask the City Girls? Are you kidding? I wouldn't ask them anything. They are too busy trashing anything that works in the city that they are not involved in doing. How many children do they have among the three of them that would be out trick or treating?  How can anyone be against our children having a good time?

I knew the City girls must be behind the bashing of the Main Street program and its director after children and their parents/grandparents had a great halloween.

So should we close Main Street anytime you and your children are walking downtown? Anything to make you feel safer. Are the sidewalks not adequate for you, you need to walk out into the street too? You seem to think traffic should be stopped just to suit you and your irrational overprotectiveness. I have children and my husband and I take them downtown to trick or treat. We had not problem keeping them on the sidewalk. I think closing Main Street was unecessary.

Who did they count every mother, father and grandmother. Who are you kidding! I was down there and I didn't see near that many kids trick or treating. I did see a lot of parents caring buckets for kids who were sick, etc. Lets not over due the success. Yes it is a good thing but lets not get carried away with numbers. Anyway it is not about numbers. Numbers don't mean anything. Its just like churches who get carried away with getting the numbers up. That doesn't mean it was a success. It isn't about how many but if you are reaching the people in a positive way. At times there could have been too many and the kids got frustrated trying to dodge all the people.

Yes this poster is right! Its not about numbers but the quality of an event. I heard several people complaining about the different thing. If you only please several out of hundreds was it a success? My children had a good time and all went well for me, thanks.

As a mother of two boys, I've taken them downtown to trick or treat many times and never had any problem with Main Street not being closed. I've heard many people gripe this year about it being closed down because it was inconvenient for them. I see their point. The sidewalks downtown are very wide and nice. It seems a few hysterical parents control everything anymore. Closing Main Street was a poor decision

Who's upset? You are the one who started slamming the News Journal, the Chamber and the Economic Development Director. We need real change on Main Street. Not just give away events so the county folks will come to town. The Trick of Treat event is Ok but it is just like the Fireworks show in July. A lot of effort on a lot of folks and a lot of traffic for little or no benefit to Corbin. It is just another smoke screen.

It sounds like you are the Scrooge of Halloween. Were you ever a child?

HAHA! This last comment was GREAT!! LOL! Good question!!

How about commending for the positive things that are done for our community instead of downing every single little thing. Doing something for our children to keep them safe is wonderful!! This was a fabulous idea to close Main St. so our kids would be safe...and be allowed to be kids. If you are a local then you know the way to get around Main St. by now!! If not then the 5 min. wait to cross traffic shouldn't delay your travels. (you should leave a little early perhaps!) Just pick up your cell phone and call a friend. They'll talk you through it and tell you how to get around the minor detour! Gosh... stop all this incessant ignorant chatter here!

The above person asked you a question? Were you ever a kid!? (That's just too good! HAHA!)

The Times today had a poll and only 51 percent wanted main street closed for Halloween trick or treat. Wow that sure shows that people don't like change.

this was only by 127 people survey.

This debate is silly. I traveled from Gordon Hill to Cumberland Falls Highway and back to Gordon Hill around 4:00 while the event was going on and was only slightly delayed. It certainly was not a major problem. I have traveled down Main in the past when the street was not closed and was likewise delayed due to being extra cautious. Surely everyone agrees that keeping the kids safe is of #1 importance. No matter how diligent a parent is, an excited child is not safety concious and can dart out into the street - especially if the parent has 2 or more children. So if the closing of the street for a couple of hours is such a problem, stay off the street! Suck it up!

And some 35 % said they didn't mind having the street closed for the kids but wished there had been advance communications  about it. There was a very minimal negative vote. Surely we can all agree to work together to make Halloween an enjoyable and SAFE experience for our youngsters.
