RE: When is an Industrial Banquet not about Industry: When it's held in Corbin.

I will repeat a question from a previous post. It is a simple question, and you would think someone should be able to answer it.

What is our current economic director, industrial commission working on presently to bring new industry and business into our city???

As a taxpayer and business owner in Corbin, I want to know.

Anyone???

Its not about hating someone. Its just I am tired of when someone, or group puts on an event in Corbin, people in this community just want to sit back a complain. What about making suggestions now for next years events instead of waiting a week or even a month before. These events are planned in advanced. Its the same ole thing, Corbin needs to wake up and stop being this little petty small town we are.

Lets expand on this a little.

Carpenter could have put out the agenda weeks or months ahead of the banquet. But he didn't. And Estep, with his years of experience in dealing with this event, could have advised Bruce that he needed to put out the schedule of events, or pointed out he neglected to have the two awards he left out. But, he didn't. I wonder why?

We would have known then he had decided NOT to have an Entrepreneur of the Year or give the Lorene Hodge Award. Then, we could have done something about it. But, other than reading Hal Rogers' name all over the place, or seeing a schedule of events, even in his supporting mentor's weekly newspaper, we saw nothing. NOTHING about the other guests and awards.

Bruce Carpenter is where he is now because of people like Lorene Hodge. Lorene broke ground for all of us in those areas, so we had a foundation to stand on when we kept the faith going. And not only that, but to have a woman with the responsibility she had, in those days back in the 50's and 60's, is a truly outstanding feat in itself which should be recognized. In that respect alone, I'm surprised we don't have more women writing here and bringing that up. Does that mean that the tri county women just go along and not say anything?

Complain, you're darn right I'll complain. I thought it was taken care of like it had been been in previous years. I didn't know a pair of horse's tails like Carpenter and Estep would take it upon themselves to totally change and alienate the Industrial Appreciation Banquet like they did. Oh, and since Estep mentioned it in his article, we'll throw Carpenters assistant Ms. Rich in there too. She was right there beside him, helping with the plans and schedule. You know she had looked at the previous years events and awards and saw those catagories being honored.

I wonder what politicial action figure Carpenter will invite next year. I guess it'll depend on the elections, won't it.

And you mentioned suggestions for next year! Read the NIBROC Suggestions for 2008 thread on this board. There's some good suggestions on there. Not all are usable, but, people put them on there. Ms Rich addressed some of them right after they were written in a letter to the editor of both papers. All she had to say was negative comments about some of them, she neglected to mention any of the good ones. Read the thread, and tell us what you think. Maybe one of the best suggestions for next year is for Ms Rich to find another job. The 2008 nibroc meetings should be starting in january or february, not far off. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

And the poster 3 up is right, I'd agree none of the school kids today know who Lorene is, or her accomplishments. Even more, few of the present teachers will know her. They don't know who Harry Taylor, Ossie Burch, or Zeke Perkins are either, but, the awards given in their honor are given for accomplishments in the past. Maybe we need to add an elective class at the high school on "Corbin History: Our Heritage, old and new." We could even have locals come in for lectures, Allen Dizney, Don Estep, Bill Crook, Bob Terrell, Paul Pietrowski, Cotton Adams, Dave Huff, Don and Bruce Barton, and others that lived corbin history. (no they're not old, they are the only ones left that know the history)

Sorry for this big rant, but, this is a subject dear to me.

And before someone says it, No, I'm not one of the Terrells.

Regarding Lorene Hodge and our respect for women in this town, you have to remember, we continue to refer to our females who work in city government as the "city girls" at city hall, and Joan Rich referred to herself in her Times editorial as one of Bruce's "girls". So, you can see where we still place the value of women in our town. We don't even give them names, even though they probably work harder than anyone in town.

Regarding the suggestion that locals give lectures on the history of Corbin @ the high school, you can't seriously be suggesting we subject our teens to an hour long rant by Allen Dizney? They will be skipping class!

I think your question is a valid one. So if you want to know so bad, why not just ask the economic director or members of the industrial commission about your concerns? They would probably be happy to answer your questions.

That approach may be better than posting anonymous, nasty messages to a board that only a few people read, and then expecting a real answer. As a taxpayer and business owner in Corbin, I'm sure you are smart enough to know this. So I suspect that the only reason you posted was to trash people.

Try a little kindness. You might be surprised.

Once again, why has the Industrial Appreciation Banquet stopped recognizing the Entrepeneur of the Year at the annual banquet? This used to be one of the top segments of the banquet?

Who decided to discontinue this special recognition? Why was the Lorene Hodge Award of the year discontinued? Who are the "deciders" of these kinds of decisions?
