This topic came out of another thread concerning the Expo Center.
It mentioned going to every single business in corbin, and on the outskirts of the city limits, to invite them to join. I can't see our totally lazy director doing this, he would think it's beneath him, but, it's an excellent idea. The post mentioned telling people what the chamber can do for them, and the benefit of joining.
Just what can the chamber do for them?
What benefit do they get from joining?
I work out of corbin, but have lived here all my life. I've worked and owned business's in corbin, but have never joined the chamber. Why, because no one ever talked to me. They would send me a letter, but never called, never visited. Never explained what they could do for me and my business.
My wife works in corbin. Her boss's business is not in the chamber. Why, because no one has ever called or visited him to join. His business, let's say it's a professional services office. He received a letter two years or so ago, but, it wasn't a letter to join, or explaining the reasons or benefits of joining the chamber of commerce, it was basically a bill, telling him if he joined, this is what he owed.
We read of their chamber lunch meetings. And lately, they're nothing but Republician Party political campaign meetings. That is crazy. They want my boss to pay dues so they can tout a political campaign candidate, on his dime. Bull!!!
And nibroc, a great event for the community, we all enjoy it. But, nibroc is the only thing that people know the chamber spends money on.
What exactly has the chamber done to bring in any business that wasn't going to locate here in the first place? NOTHING that we know of, or it would have been in the paper.
Where is the chamber on trying to convince Vangent not to leave town to go to london? THEY MUST BE AT THE REPUBLICIAN CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THEY LOST THE ELECTION!
So, what can the chamber do, and what can they offer, a business?
I'm in business in the city of corbin, and they do nothing for me but send me a bill every year. I get no ballot for these votes they have, and no one calls me for an opinion or a meeting. I get no invitations for these things they put on, so, why am I a member. Maybe I shouldn't be. I don't know who the board members are, or who these new nominees are either.
Some may say I need to get more involved, but, those are usually the ones that have jobs they can leave to go to these meetings, or are retired and have nothing to to, or are our elected officials who are all retired but 2 of them.
The chamber should be knocking on my door every month to see what i need and what i think.
I just found this message board, while visiting a friends house, and he let me post here. I'll make sure I keep it up from now on.
And, after reading a few of the other subjects on here,
I live in the city, I work in the city, and this bull about not letting people that do not live in the city serve on boards and committees is just that, bull.
And another thing, these elected officials and our city management people, need to get out and try to convince people to be annexed into the city, and ask them what it would take for them to come in. What are we paying them for?

"Corbin city resident and business owner" Outstanding message! The Chamber should be the voice of the business people who belong to the Chamber. The nomination and vote for Board members should be well known by every member so they can participate in the process. Thanks very much. Your messages and knowledge will be helpful and informatinve.

Your seem very grumpy and hateful. Probably the reason no one from the Chamber comes to you is because they know what a bad attitude you have.
I live in London and work downtown. The chamber up here doesn't knock on people's doors every month. They especially wouldn't do it to get a nasty earful from people like you.
I have never seen people so negative about the community they live in. I love London, but from my perspective, Corbin seems to have it together.
Amazing that a london resident would be this interested in corbin? If your really a london resident, i'm betting your no london resident at all but actually live here in corbin!!!!!
Be a little more crafty, your giving yourself away to easy.

Why is that so hard to believe? I live in London and surf this board and post to it all the time. It makes me laugh to see Corbin people fight amongst themselves.

Its the same people who get on a pretend to be out of towners who have a problem with everything! We all know who it is and what group you represent. They give theirselves away easy. Sorry not very convincing when we can read between the lines! But I do enjoy getting on and reading the same bull everyday from the same group. Its better than reading the comics or watching sports on TV.
It's amazing how people think that we, the people, owe some sort of debt of gratitude to elected officials and appointee's just for them serving in an office or other capacity.
You know, I was reading the areas employer stats on another thread here, and as I read, I was thinking about the various business's along the roads.
If Carpenter still owns the dry cleaners up by Little Caesars, it isn't in the city limits either. That whole strip center is not in the city limits.
In no way defending the guy, but his dry cleaner is in the city limits. I use Joe House's place on Main Street, but Carpenter's in in the city I'm pretty sure.
