So, the mayor want's to see if the new restaurant association is for real before he appoints a member to his tourism committee. That's interesting.
They have a charter drawn up according to the laws of the state, and all the legal stuff, but the mayor wants to make sure they're legit.
They have 5 members I believe, or was it 6 or 7. I don't have my paper handy. They charge $500 to join. Obvioiusly, the other business's have paid their dues. That makes them legit.
And, the association can nominate 3 members to present to the mayor and commission for appointment to the tourism committee, required by law. But the mayor wonders if they're legit. Sounds like he's scared.
Just so happens, the three nominated members are either owners of Tuscany Gardens, or will be soon. And the problem with that is, NOTHING.
If they had a meeting of the membership, then, they have minutes, and they can be checked to make sure it's valid.
And, they have a lawyer too. Now isn't that interesting.
You know the interesting part here. Estep will be off the board when the next board is seated, to include one of these three nominees. He'll have no say in any part of it. And who will the next chairperson be. I'm not sure of that, but, they'll have a fight on their hands if one of the new Restaurant Association members, nominated according to state law, isn't one of them. And that will be something to see, as I don't think any of the three nominees are part of the Depot gang, or the downtown gang.
Could this mean that the nibroc funds for next year will be required to be accounted for to the penny, or at least the funds from the donation of the tourism committee?
Could this mean the new tourism committee board could have a say in recommending who the person or company is to run the new expo center is? I don't know, I'm asking you all out there.
And, keep in mind, there's a new Hotel Association forming (or formed) too, and they get 2 seats on one of the committees, I'm not sure which. And with that, who are some of the actual owners of the hotels located in the city limits of corbin. Anyone know.
2008 will be an interesting year for our local city government.
Three spots for the Hotel Assoc., and one for the Rest. Assoc., that's 4 of the 6 if things stay the same. Could they increase the total number of spots on the committee then.
The reason I ask, is Estep (in abstentia) and Tipton going to be on the limb here. As long as Tipton doesn't get the chair seat, we should be fine. If he does, we'll know he'll be an Estep/Carpenter puppet and it's business as usual.
McBurney will be sweating a little too, if he has to appoint 4 board members from a group he has no control over as far as who is being nominated. None of the commissioners will either.
We may get some truly new blood in a few controlling spots. What will the blue hairs (or in corbins case the red hairs) do. Imagine a committee as important as Tourism is now, and will be even more important in the near and distant future, controlled by real voters and corbin business people.
The Mayor shouldn't get in a big hurry. I heard that at least two other restaurant associations are going to be formed soon. They will charge less money for dues in an effort to get some of the smaller restaurants to join. It will be interesting to see which, if any, of these groups the city will recognize for tourism appointments. Same thing goes for the motel associations. You can't just pay a lawyer 300 bucks to form a corporation and then say that you are the official association for some cause. Surely we don't have idiots at city hall that would go for this.
What will be interesting is the lawsuit that will result if the mayor doesn't appoint the people from these various associations to the tourism committee. Regardless of what people think, if they go through the procedures established by law in kentucky to form their association, then the mayor will have to follow through. If he doesn't, especially with the advice of our esteemed city attorney, then I'd say a quick lawsuit will follow. And it should.
McBurney better be on his toes on this one, as the other side has more power, political influence, and strings to pull than he does.
One poster mentioned something about paying $300 and being the official association for a group. I don't see how it couldn't be, especially if they follow the rules.
All the hotels located in the city limits of corbin, are on the south exit. Vance is involved in two of them, maybe 3. Add the newly opened Mountain View Inn (formerly holiday inn) too.
It'll be interesting to see how the mayor and commission gets around this one.
Get real. This man has tried to con every mayor into one or another of his deals for years. The current mayor will not be fooled by him or his hired lawyer. Lawsuits are a common element of municipal life for every city and town. For one man to form a business and declare it the officially recognized group for anything is a joke and in this particular case it is an insult to the taxpayers of Corbin. Everyone can see through him including the mayor.
