Corbin City salaries, what do we pay our people. Anyone know.

Does anyone know what what the starting salaries for:

Policeman

Fireman

Street Dept:

And, does anyone know the current salary for the city manager.

They're not in the budget, as far as the yearly budget or departmental budget goes, it only lists totals.

Is that a Feedom of Information Act type of request, as any tax funded public employee's salary is an open record I believe.

I don't have any exact amounts but I have heard this discussed several times. I think the pay rates in Corbin are somewhat higher than surrounding cities like W'burg, B'ville, Mt Vernon, Berea but less than Richmond and Lex. The police make 11 or so an hour for starting out plus overtime plus state incentive pay plus a take home cruiser and I heard that the chief gets an executive size paycheck since he has been there for almost 40 years.

The police in Corbin are well paid for a small town but they really do earn their pay as there are tons of police calls each day. I have heard it said that they have calls waiting for them even before they can get the call that they are on finished up and that they wave at the firemen as they drive down main street to their next call. Too bad there cannot be a combination police and fire department.

A combination police and fire department, that's an interesting concept.

Would the firemen answer police call in their fire trucks, and the police put out brush fires with their fire extinguishers, or what?

Anyone know exactly what a new police officer and fireman start out making an hour. As I recall, it was only around $9 an hour.

I believe you are right. Go down to city hall and request this information in person and make them give it to you. Report back to us what you find out.

Thanks for bringing this up. I'm excited to see what you come up with.

You are right. We make more money now than ever before on the police department plus the home fleet plan is a great benefit. I would like to see the city pay insurance for all family members and not just the employee but I have asked officers in other police departments and they do the same thing.

Why should the Tax Payers have to go to city hall? The city should make this public information, I've already did my part with paying my tax's. The city should do their part and tell me where my money was spent.

Report back to you, you need to hire a contractor if you need a trip to city hall and a report. Governments report to the people, not the other way around.

Maybe the city could send a house call team out with this information. Start on fifth street road and work their way out deeper into the county. Good idea.

Or even better, Corbin city hall could do like thousands of other cities and make this information available online, along with board meeting minutes and other public information.

The last poster is correct which is the easy move "BUT"

Since the poster two up suggested the city start at fifth street and work their way out then maybe we can use the "Sam's Mobile Hot Dog Trailer" to make all the contacts.

We can simply attach the MHDT (Mobile Hot Dog Trailer) to one of the many Industrial Support Vehicles and our dilima is solved???

Not only can the city Tax Payers find out information about where our Tax Money is going we can enjoy a marvelous Hot Dog and join the Chamber Of Commerce, all in one stroke.

We also may be able to sneak this expert team into London after dark and recruit some of our lost jobs back to Corbin.

If they want to avoid taxes they could tag the trailer out of state. Then they could fill it up with city W-2s and head on out to see you. You could go through them or you could just call city employees and ask them how much they make.

I doubt that the trailer people would do that since Free-Roading is a crime in Kentucky.

I don't see this happening with a $25 a month web site service. Oh wait, is that the city or tourism. IT"S BOTH!

What does this poster mean? Is someone Free-Roading?

It's when people live in one state, but they license their vehicle in another, usually a state with lower or non-existent property taxes on cars. It's illegal in Kentucky, but unfortunately it's a law which is not enforced effectively.

Carson Mullins has a good group of cops here and we should be grateful. I'm glad they are paid better, but cops, fire fighters and school teachers should be higher on the scale, and should have great benefits and retirement. We need to appreciate all of these these folks.

Sounds like a pretty rotten way to cheat the system. Are there people around town that do this?

Board meetings and minutes I've found. But I searched on the websites of most decent sized cities in KY I could think of and I didn't see any listing of salaries by position. Are you sure about this?

The information is out there if you want it, but it will require a minimum amount of effort on your part. Just because city leaders don't spoon feed this to you as though you are a helpless little baby doesn't make them bad leaders. It just makes you a lazy citizen.

Great comments, we do have some good officers, fire fighters and teachers here and there should be some sort of appreciation days for all of these people.

You learn something new every day. I did not know that people did that anymore.

There used to be a statewide campaign against the practice of Free Roading with TV commercials and all. Maybe Gov Beshear will step up the enforcement of this crime once again. Even if the state does not I hope that local law enforcement will.

It is not fair for people to have to license and pay taxes on their vehicles while a few get by year after year without doing it.

I also agree with UK Cat that we have good police and fire departments.

I thought the person that started this thread was going to go down to city hall and get this information for us.

What happened? Got busy? Chickened out?

Please let us know.

City pay must be pretty good. Fireman complain all of the time but none have ever left Corbin for better pay as a fireman? Fire chiefs have been known to get old and toothless before they will even consider retirement. A city clerk or city collector just about has to die off for an opening to come up. It is rumored that the city manager turned down several state jobs because he didn't want to take a pay cut.

If city leaders put a freeze on pay increases for the top people like city manager, police chief, fire chief, clerk, treasurer, attorney, etc. then they could pay the police, fire and street department people more money. Could they do this?

No.

Yes they can too. That is a great idea. I am going to talk to the city leaders about putting a limit on some of the salaries. There is no need to keep handing out raises to the city manager and city collector when they cannot even get the property tax bills out on time. And why should the city keep giving raises to old heads like the police and fire chiefs when their time has come and gone. They need to move on and let younger people have a crack at the job.

Thanks for your support of the police and fire departments I can speak for the fire dept. there are no millionaires down there. They start out at $7.23 an hour or about $23,000 a year.

I heard that when Amos Miller took office there were some firemen that made 50,000 plus because of overtime. He was the one who started the so called working short policy. Don't be fooled by the 7.23. Besides that is starting pay and fireman pay has built in overtime each week. Plus most firemen have another job to round out the rest of their week. They work one day for the city and are off two to do what ever they want to. They can spend their off time fishing or working depending on whether they are industrious or not. Part of their city work time is spent sleeping. That is OK. Nobody expects them to stay up all night waiting for a call. I appreciate their efforts but don't think that they are not well paid for what they do.
