Home-schooling Children

Can parents just decide to remove children from school and home-school them? Are there guidelines tests or something? I know parents who removed their 1st grader from a private school and he will tell you that he does a little work then just plays and watches TV the rest of the day. Does anyone know the requirements to home-school a child?

I don't know all of the requirements, but I do know, that yes, you can just choose to remove a child and home-school them. The guidelines and requirements are shockingly slim. This is a very controversial topic. Some parents do a great job at it. However, if the parent is not motivated or educated themselves, it can be a disaster for the child's education. Not to mention their social skills.

I've known many parents that have chosen to go this route, and frankly, I've very skeptical of the program.

Surely there is some sort of monitoring agency to ensure the child is being educated properly, even at home.

All it takes to homeschool a child is writing a letter to the local board of education. Parents aren't required to provide any information or curriculum to anyone. This is a true disservice to most children that are homeschooled. Parents jerk them out of school when they start getting threatened with court for truancy or child's misbehvior. They take them out for a year or two then return and there is nothing the school districts can do about it!! Our state needs to do something to regulate.
