RE: NIBROC

I've read back through the comments regarding this subject, and it seems like one or two people are getting a little defensive. Some of the comebacks are kinda funny, and dont even stick to the point. I don't live in Corbin but have friends and do business there, and have been to nibroc and the shows were great (as long as I could sneak into the reserved section). But it seems as though if you express an opinion about nibroc, a couple of folks take that as being some sort of trator. Even the best businesses can improve and do better, and as I recall reading in the local papers, there were initially some issues with the nibroc funding for this topic several months back.

To the people who are getting defensive about an opinion on controling costs, the more you squirm and make exagerated and silly comments, the worse you and your position look. To the people who have an opinion on costs, you might think $30k is a lot and have a right to express your opinion, but if the low bid was $30 grand, it's $30 grand. Sometimes small towns pay the price for being small, and with fewer choices, the other bids must have been higher.

Hi all,

I have been to Corbin before to Cumberland Falls State Park twice now. I am planning on going to the NIBROC Festival for the first time this year. The reason I wanted to make sure to be there was because Trick Pony is playing there..I think this is a great band to have there because they have a big fan base and fans that are willing to travel to see them, and they usually get alot of new fans from people who are seeing them for the first time. If a so-called 'bigger name' had been booked there...I would not be coming. I am looking forward to seeing all the Festival has to offer and enjoying some time in Corbin again. People in Kentucky are truly wonderful and I am looking forward to attending my first NIBROC Festival. Incidentally...can someone tell me what NIBROC stands for?

                                                                                                              Thanks!

                                                                                                                Ken

But Sir------No one here seems to know what the low or high bid was now do they. Without those figures none of us know if this was money wasted or well spent. All the comments could be silly including yours unless you have the Bids. These positions you claim folks are taking are simply opinions, just like yours.

Your another speculator, big words with zero fact.

I like some parts of the NIBROC. I don't like to see some people get seats and many people have to stand behind the fence to watch. Very often there are many empty seats but many people have already left the area.

I think that people should be able to purchase some reserved seats. Everyone can't be a sponsor, but would be willling to pay a reasonable price for a ticket. I think sponsors should get free tickets, but there need to be more seats to accomodate others.

I have asked several Downtown folks about this along with the REST of the town that benefits from Nibroc, most all do extremly well, sure there are some that do not do very well but net net sir the town certainly does well, are you sugesting we stop Nibroc? Ask this qustion "What would happen if there were NO Nibroc"? You really would have many merchants upset!

I don't think I've read anyone say "Stop" Nibroc, but your comment(s) are pretty entertaining. I believe if you actually asked your question, none of the downtown merchants would lose sleep over no Nibroc, or if it was moved from downtown.

Nibroc is good for certain busineses and individuals (much of the revenue goes to out of town vendors) but as one poster said, as with anything, it can always be improved upon.

MMMMM----Most all the downtown Merchants are at the chamber meetings, maybe you should ask them at the next meeting what you just quoted, wonder what their answer's will be??

Oh by the way, whom do you think pushes to keep Nibroc Downtown??? That's right, the Downtown Merchants. This was moved to the Civic Center grounds around 10 years ago, plenty of room for all, BUT, whom do you think lobbied to get this back downtown, right again my good man-------------The Downtown Merchants!!!

Maybe you should go to a couple Chamber Meetings.

I don't know what downtown businesses this guy or gal thinks they are speaking for, but I can tell you first hand that hardly any, if any, downtown businesses attend the chamber meetings. As far as the other person's comments, the festival does not help most businesses - we are blocked off from most of main street.

Who do you think makes up the Chamber??? You and your Business obviously do not support Nibroc, why don't you just come out and say it instead of beating around the bush.

Make a New Proposal to the Cmte, tell'em you want this somewhere else and that it's not helping any of the downtown Business's out. Make your case, prove your points, show it with facts and data and show where an alternative site could be used and how it would be more succesful in that particular spot.

If 100% of the folks downtown want to boot the Nibroc then say it, list the names of the Business's that oppose Nibroc, starting with yours, don't hide, speak up and make your points, get together as a group, if none of the Downtown Merchants are attending the Chamber meetings then you should have a strong team, Make a good business case here and folks will listen, post it here on this website so all of us can see it, put it in the newspapers for all to see.

I'll wait to see your proposal, if it does not show up I guess we can assume you really don't know what your talking about-----------Now, Let's see that Alternative Plan?

You may have a case?

Folks

Walked downtown on Wednesday to check out Nibroc, was not impressed this year at all. Other than all the congestion this has caused I always still looked forward to Nibroc.

I read David O Smiths's comments in the Corbin Times and wanted a first hand look for myself, unfortunatley he made some accurate comments. The vendors we saw many years ago selling Quilts, Crafts, Church Groups, Just Local Floks, have all vanished? Now you only see out of town vendors selling stuff (Not quite sure what some of it even was????)

Other than the Food Vendors the Arts & Crafts were no where to be found. I also walked over to a smaller Mid-Way???? The Entertainment is also somewhat dissappointing, I have been a strong supporter of Nibroc but extremley disappointed so far.

I was at Nibroc last night, and I agree, the city has lost Nibroc. It now belongs to a select group of individuals who work it and run it as their own big powerplay BASH - some of whom ride around on sawwed-off golf carts with walkie-talkies trying to act like they are all of that.

This is not Washington DC, and you are not in charge of a visit by the President. Its Corbin, KY and the Nibroc Festival, one of tens of thousands of festivals throughout the country that take place to bring communities closer together - lets get back to acting like it's Nibroc, not Woodstock.

I agree. Let's have more home area groups and local area vendors. We have some great musicians right in this area.

Pro Video-Audio out of Monticello has handled NIBROC for several years running.

I agree that NIBROC has gone down hill.  The vendors are a joke.  What ever happened to local folks that do woodcrafts, tupperware, baskets, etc.  The past couple of years the weather has been terrible during the festivities.  Why not move to October?  Weather is usual mild and not as many scorchers or storms.  Corbin Schools are out during this week.  Why doesn't the carnival operate during the day -- they would make lots of money considering there is no school...  I think the committee needs to survey some local folks that are not included..  They should spend a few bucks on some mailers and less on some of the bands.    Let's hope things get better or before long noone other than the local trash will come out for the events!!!

I heard that the lowest sponsorship level this year cost $1000. In the past sponsorships began at $150 or $250. Is this true? If so, it kind of squeezes out the small business and individual sponsorships from Nibroc, the types of intities that Nibroc is supposed to be about - makes no sense.

Moving to the fall break in October is a very good idea! Just way toooooo hot in early August and with school starting makes things very tough! The Nibroc has grown big time and certainly needs to look at some well needed tweaking to bring it in to the current times.

The massive crowds now and fewer local vendors along with several other challenges will make for some creative thinking by next years planners. Thanks however to those who worked hard to put this years show on, it still took alot of work to make things happen.

October would be great, about 15 to 20 degrees cooler, easier on patrons, volunteers and vendors. Also, need to conduct tighter screenings of vendors, and make concerts accessable to more people. Was also disappointed there were no classic rock or R&B acts this year.

The Tri-County area has some outstanding Gospel singing groups. Rather than spend a lot of money getting groups from other areas I believe we should feature these groups from our area.

This poster's comment is pretty clear. The real question is, where were YOU on Wednesday night? I believe the featured group was the Hoppers, who the last time I checked have not relocated to Corbin, cost a lot of money, and unfortunately had to cancel due to a family issue. The featured groups the previous two years were also from out of town.

So, where were you?

Yes, where were you? I agree that with all the gospel music we have in this area we could have great music going somewhere in town all four nights.  This could become a center of gospel music in Eastern Kentucky.  Why do we pay any outside groups when we can have great talent here at home-and help promote that talent.

One way to unite the people in this Tri-County area is to feature groups from all over our area. We don't need to bring in groups from other places when we have so much talent right here at home. Let's make NIBROC a program for the people.

Those of us out in the county agree that local talent should be a big part of NIBROC. The Old Fashion Days in Williamsburg have a great Gospel Music program with many of our local people on hand. Anyone that comes can bring a chair and sit in the street and enjoy it. NIBROC has its super elite group with seats down front and many people have to stand back of the fences. I realize the sponsors put up money to pay for the expensive groups brought in but I don't like to go to an event that is supposed to be for the people and be unable to sit and watch it.

I wasen't one of the so called super elite and got a good seat, I was just smart enough to come early. The people down front are the reason the great entertainment is there in the firt place. The year before and this year I got free tickets from the sponsers. The event is for the people and free, stop your grumbling and come early,or search down Pepsi or any of the other sponsers they have plenty of free tickets. Just pretend you are looking for NASCAR tickets I'm sure you know some one you can purchase or get free ones from. Thats how I get to the races.

As you can see by my user name, I am a NIBROC fan. I love it, and often take days off from work just to go to town and hang out at NIBROC.

I think we should try all the vendor booths on one side of the street, from Gordon to 7th. This will open up the pedistrian traffic flow, and make it more spacious on main street.

Give it a try. You can even lower the spot rentals for the end blocks, just to give vendors some incentives to try the ends.

Also, and I may try this one year, I would like to see someone rent chairs. Just simple, cheap, folding lawn chairs to start with. Not a war pension rental, just a fair fee. Of course you'd have to charge a deposit, to make sure you get your chair back, but, many folks like just sitting around and "people watching".

Like I said, I love NIBROC. It's only gotten better over the years (except for the year it wasn't on main st.) It'll have problems, but, anything of this magnatude will, especially when it's based primarily on volunteer help.

Can't wait till this year.

Does anyone know the rental charges for the various sizes of vendor booths, and how they charge various vendors and groups.

I'm sure I could find this out by calling, but, was hoping someone here could elaborate.
