RE: NIBROC

Come on, don't steal this once a year opportunity for a small number of volunteers to live the American dream - to be a big shot a NIBROC! In these folk's minds they are working for the Secret Service protecting the invisable President in front of an admiring public - a public who sees them cruising around on their ATV in their mirrored Raybans and thinks "WOW, they must be important - they're a big shot at NIBROC!".

It's a rush I'm sure none of us can imagine unless we are one of the chosen few bestowed this special privlilege.

Besides, NIBROC is one of only 20,000 such festivals in the U.S., so this opportunity to be a big shot doesn't come around but for only a chosen few thousand. On top of that, most festivals make these people actually walk on FOOT to patrol and make sure things run smoothly - how guache!.

Aw, heck, all some of us can do is dream we'll make it to the top one day - the top of that big shiny prestigous NIBROC ATV .

Sorry, I've got to run, my eyes are tearing up.

There are some wonderful volunteers for NIBROC who don't ride around in the vehicles, and who don't get much credit for all the good things they do. Those are the ones I appreciate, not the big dogs.

What a humorous and idiotic statement. NIBROC is not a one man show, and without "THE DOG" the show would definately go on, and probably be even better since there would be more community input and teamwork and less possessiveness regarding the event and less of a "Control Freak" mentality.

You make it sound like running NIBROC is like running the NFL. Its a fun event, but it ain't the Superbowl. I think you need to get out a little more.

Also, one thing they teach most people early in life - everyone is replaceable.

Sorry, can't agree on the riding thing.  When they force their way through the crowds, making children and old people move and spill their drinks and food just so they can get through, NO.  They can walk. Those little carts are their status symbols of "I'm the man".  They serve no purpose except on set up night when they are directing the vendors.  And it's always just the 2 or 3 riding, all the other volunteers are walking, having to carry or use carts to haul their stuff.  Been there, volunteered, done that, know all the excuses. They're lazy, and that's that. (except for set up night)

This poster on right on the mark. I've been to many other festivals, much larger than nibroc, carts are not used. It does appear to be an ego thing for a few people, and its even an inside joke among some of the other harder working volunteers. The other "CRY CRY CRY, WITHOUT THE DOG THE SHOW WILL NOT GO ON" is just nuts, as one person does not make nibroc. In fact, nibroc was better years ago before it became a giant ego trip for a handful of people. Nibroc needs to be given back to the community and local businesses, and the carts need to be given back to the Corbin PD.

These Folks have hit the Nail right on the head! The 4-Wheelers should be left to Police & Fire only, my goodness we all know who the guily party is! Just watch.

No Question it's an Ego thing. My advice to Bruce is be very careful with whom you surround yourself with as they may not be quite suited when dealing with lot's of Folks at one time!

If someone gets hurt or injured as a result of these Unsafe acts the the City should be held responsible!!!

Could you elaborate? Which atmosphere are you referring to?

Well, honestly, the atmosphere of just good old fun.

Think folks don't love the nibroc!  Go down on the set up days, when the vendors are coming in and setting up. There are dozens of people downtown, watching, trying to figure out what vendors are coming in. There's nothing to do, no food, no entertainment. Just nibroc'ers wanting to see the show start. Oh, and not to mention how many people start driving and walking downtown on sunday and monday checking out the carnival as it rolls in and sets up.

We park a few blocks away, usually in a friends driveway or yard, or on the street. As you near main street, you can begin to hear and smell nibroc. No matter how old you are, you remember  your younger days when it meant seeing people, old and new alike. As you walk up toward the street, the crowd is already there, and you know it'll be hectic, but, it'll be fun.

We look forward to seeing many of our friends and their families there. You stop and talk and catch up. Watching the faces of the small kids waiting for the rides and cotton candy, and wanting to play the games, thinking any prize is huge.

The smells of all the different foods cooking, changing every few feet as you leave one area and enter another. Sure, you've eaten supper at home, but, after you walk down main, you're suddenly hungry again. Sno Cones, carmel apples, funnel cake, gyros, hot dogs and nachos.

The crowds are tight on main, the vendors tents and trailers pushing everyone to the middle, having to almost plow through some of the folks unknowingly clogging up the avenue. But, you're in no hurry, where you gonna go.

You casually stroll around, walking and talking, and going through the midway every few trips up the street. You can stop by the park, and see whats going on there too. Then just walk on. Where you gonna go?

Friday's parade is always a good one, and newcomers are always surprised at the crowd, and the size of the parade.  People jeer the parade sometimes, but you always see them there, watching and smiling, and enjoying themselves. There's always a big act, and sometimes several, on the stages on friday. Many times, as good as the big saturday act.

On saturday, you know the big show is there. Regardless of who it is, you still want to see it, and at least say you were there. You watch the crowd gather, the sun is going down, and the crowd is getting tense. When the show starts, you look around and realize how many people are there. You're shocked, but not surprised.  Think people don't enjoy it. Stick around and see how many folks are still there at 11pm, waiting to see how many other people are still there at 11pm.

That's the atmosphere. We love it, and many others do as well. Think we don't have a life, or never get out of town!!!!!  Maybe not, but we're not worried.  We enjoy it.  Those that don't, don't come down. We'll be there.

Nibroc has come up a lot lately, with it being just around the corner.

The downtown issues with the business's are very valid.

Thinking back, in the 60's, it was held over at what is now Rotary Field. Much smaller of course.  I'm speaking of the carnival mainly.

The downtown portion was an event in itself. All the stores had sidewalk sales, as it was usually held right before school started.  That way, the back to school buying would start then. And, there were several stores that you could buy from ,that participated in it. Newberry's, Boundaruant Drugs, Cato's, Varisity and Villager Shops, Belk's, Penny's, Huff Drug, Sterchi's, Morgan's 5&10, Maggie J's, Daniel's to name some.  They all had stuff for sale on the sidewalks and for school, even if it  was just pencils and paper.

The many food places added to it too, Newberry's, Boundaurants, Huff's, The Dixie, Krystal, was where you took your breaks. Newberry's lunch counter was second to none, and you could pop a balloon for a free shake or burger.  Add that to Mr. Lawson always in the window of the Dixie, and it was fun.

They used to do the kick off breakfast (I'm not sure if they still do or not), mainly at the Dixie.  It was packed. Of course, you had many more business's downtown, and many non-retail places too.  The two banks, all the shops employees usually went, the telephone company office was on the corner of main and 3rd, so the oncoming ladies would go, and then the offgoing operators would go in as well.  All the stores didn't open till 830 or 9am, so their employees came down early to eat too.  But, as time goes on, as the stores went, so did the sidewalk sales, and so went the downtown participation. At one point, Hardee's joined in the kickoff breakfast. It went fairly well, but, just wasn't the same.  I'll give then a big credit for trying though.

All the church's had rummage sales that week too. First and Central Baptist, First Christian, and the Methodist church's all had them. People would go from one to another. It was an event back then.

The horse show was that week too, and at the football field for a few years. They stopped that in the 70's I believe.  Said it tore up the field as football season was just around the corner.

The Nibroc queen stuff was really big too.  The tea's and other events were major happenings as well.  And the pageant was a bid todo back then. The crowds were huge.

The parade was a big one too. All the surrounding areas marching bands participated, which really made it seem like an event. All the local clubs had floats, and many school clubs as well.  The parade is one thing that still holds the same prestige as it once did.

When it moved to the civic center lot, I think in the late 70's and 80's, it was terrible. I don't remember when it moved back downtown, but that's when it took off again.

I've heard mixed reviews about it being on main or Kentucky, which is better. When the whole thing was on Kentucky, it seemed like it was just to spread out. SO, I vote for the present way of nibroc.

I do hate it for the business's inconvinence, but, I don't know what to do about it. The one thing you can say is that there are fewer business's affected now than in the past. That don't make it right, it's just less intrusive.

I'm sure there's more, but I'll let someone else talk now.

I think NIBROC can be a great downtown event for everyone, but there must be changes and improvements, and the people who are supposedly in charge must be willing to listen to other opinions, accept some constructive criticism, and give up some of their "Control".

Booths need to be mapped out in more strategic manor then the current setup, placed in sections of Main Street that don't interfere with businesses such as Gibson's Music, Maggie J's, Shea's Furniture and Jewelry, The Depot, and other retail related businessess. Contrary to what organizers will tell you, i.e. electrical power, etc, it can be done.

For the past several years vendors, a majority from out of town, have received preferential treatment over our own downtown businesses, and it must stop. These vendors come in and sell their goods for 4 days, then take their sales revenue out of state, benefiting nobody. The funny thing is if you go back to some comments posted last year on this board a few individuals tried to snow people on here, like they try to do out on the street, by saying NIBROC brings in $$ Millions into the local economy - what a crock of bull.

Our downtown businesses need to be NIBROC's first priority, not North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee vendors, and not out of town bands that are paid ridiculous money that also departs the state hours later - at least most of it.

The entertainment has other issues also. There are some good bands that come through, but it is way too costly, doesn't promote local talent, and isn't the kind of entertainment you can bring your family out to every night.

Excellent comments! We have had some very good postings on this subject that could help improve the event and make it more convenient for our local businesses and entertainers. We have some top notch talent in this area.

Great info here.

Yes, it's gotten away from the local focal point.  I've not problem with out of town and out of state vendors, but, the locals need the best spots, not the Gyro man.

The problem is, the nibroc heads don't read this site, they march to a different drummer, their own.

Another past nibroc event was the old fashioned dress up day, where the store clerks and other employees of downtown business's dressed up in old fashioned clothing.  (and some of them didn't have to buy it, it was in their closets).

Last year our friends from Knoxville were in town during nibroc.  They enjoyed the festival so much, we went three nights in a row.  They commented on how it was so crowded yet fun, safe and family oriented.  They loved the concert.  This year they are coming back for Joan Jett.  They loved the fact that the children were able to run around and still be safe.  KUDOS

We apologize, but while we receive many requests and detailed information from organizers of other local events such as the Corbin Main Street program, The Cumberland Valley Cruise-In, The Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky, The Pigskin Classic, Relay for Life and many other Corbin area events, we do not receive any information from NIBROC or their organizers. The Chamber has their own website, but as of earlier this week the Chamber did not have any information posted on their site other than 2007 vendor forms.

Extensive NIBROC information should be available in both Corbin newspapers next week. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Found it.

Heres the site for the Economic Development Board, or, Chamber of commerce.

I checked it out, seems very generic in some ways. But,

Check it out and give us your opinions.

I agree. You wouldn't learn much from that site.

It's a shame too, I'm sure they're paying for maintenance and upkeep on it.

Another waste of time and money.
