RE: The Vintage House

I've been told face to face by one of the parties involved that this won't happen, but you know how things change around here. While I would prefer we keep as many good downtown businesses as possible, it would be great for all parties involved, but again, I was told this won't happen.

I've heard this just last night at nibroc.

The strongest sign that something will happen is when the parties involved deny it the most. Thats very true in sports, and has become even more true in business.

This will be interesting.

One rumor I heard is he is buying either the old Newberry's or old Goldenberg building, and putting it in there.

The other is he is going to london.

Another is he's moving to Trademart Center.

And yet another, He'll build up on the hill where the harley dealer is supposed to be (thats another story) in that plaza area.  It's almost ready for construction.

I just hope he opens another place, and stays in corbin.

I have enjoyed the comments regarding the Vintage House vs. the Poynters. It surprises me that so many people are so knowledgeable about the situation. Where do you get your 'facts'? My opinion is this: The facts and rumors are about as reliable as Clinton's famous statement, "I did not have sex with that woman!"
I believe I can wait for the final verdict.

No facts here, just rumors and "I heard's".  Thats what this site for in part. If you're a new member, you'll be surprised how many of these "rumors" turn out to be factual. Of course, it'll take time in many cases.

If all you want is facts, then you're in the wrong place.

The Vintage House is gone. Went to the post office, and they were moving all the furnishings out into trucks.  I walked over to talk to Doug, but he was there at the time, and they said he would be back within an hour, and  I couldn't wait.

I asked the folks helping him move, and they didn't/wouldn't say anything.

THis is one story I hope we find out the truth about.

are you giving us facts or just rumors? Is this something you just heard. You say, "you'll be surprised how many of these "rumors" turn out to be factual. If most of these rumors turn out to be facts then this is the right place to be.  What are you giving us, a fact or just a rumor, or a fact that turns out to be true?

Not sure who the last poster is talking to, but, it's a fact, the Vintage House is closed and packing up. Drive by yourself.

It's sort of sad.

Why should he have to tell anything to anyone? Maybe the truth is none of our business! Have  you thought about that?? Why is this board always so critical? Very little good said about anything in this town!

You obviously havn't taken time to read many postings on this message board. There are great ideas, suggestions, and a chance to express our free speech. This message board is not critical. It is a method of communication. People who have concerns or ideas are the ones these expressions and comments are made by each day.
Some people claim they support a democracy but in fact they don't want people to have the right to free speech.

>(deleted portion)<. I'll think twice about dining in his establishment in the future--if he goes into one.  If that's the best you can do, go back to Barbourville, Doug!

Enough with the politically connected running our area.  There are plenty of us "little people" who have enough knocking-around sense to make a difference in our amenities!  Step up and give what you have to offer!  No matter how little you think it might be, it counts.  If we pull together and do something, we'll have something.   Corbin is on the cusp of blooming into a town that has something to come out and see!  Not only can we draw in the tourist's money, we can have something worthy of getting out and mingling in.  Ms. Myers and Mr. Terrell as well as most of the tourism and city groups are working hard to establish us on the map.  Don't sit around and criticize them--get up and encourage their efforts.  Speak your peace.  Be the difference you want to see.
Speak up and volunteer.

There's a saying: If you always do what you've always done,
You'll always get what you've always got.

Thought it's not gramatically correct, it states the point.

Get  up and act.  If you don't like it, speak up.  Why let these crooked folks run your town???  Take it back and make it our town again.

Oh--and wave at Mr. Warriner as he's pulling out.

This sounds more realistic than anything I've heard. I don't know Doug but do know both the Poynters and Vance. Anybody in the restaurant business knows that a profit won't show for at least five years. Why would anyone go into a venture like this without a solid renewable lease?

My latest poll is that Poynter tried to almost double the rent. It was a kind of "playing chicken" , who'll give in first.

I can't wait to see who goes in the building, if anyone.

Vance is a fool if he doesn't try to get Doug in his building.  Vance said in the paper that everything he owns is for sale.  I'd say he'll be selling out soon with his restaurant.

Crooked folks running the town? Can you share your information? Do you have evidence? Are they making money off the poor? Do they do probes? Did they cause the Vintage House to close? Maybe they were also responsible for Clancys and Howard Brothers. We could open a cold case file.

There was a time when travelers made their pit stops in Corbin because of it's reputation for good restaurants. Even Newberry's was the place for a home-cooked meal. When a person asked for the restaurant where Mrs. Eubanks worked, you knew he was looking for the best pie in town.  Of course, that was another era.
It is a fact that Corbin could use that kind of reputation again.  The Vintage House was an asset to the community.  My question is: What can be gained from an empty building and loss of rent?  And what about the cost of repairs and renovatons to a vacated building?  "...almost double the rent", that takes the cake!  This message board may be the place for "rumors and hearsay", but aren't some of these rumors and hearsays quite damaging, especially, if they are just that--rumors and hearsays?  Whose face will be red when the truth is known?

I guess it is kind of like society in general. You can go to the Dixie, The Depot, a party, the store, or even City Hall and hear groups of people gossiping and talking smack - some are rumors, some not. You just have to decide for yourself whether you think the post, or the people you constantly hear talking about others behind their backs, is something you want to believe or not.

I listen to the ideas on here - there are some great ones - but the rumors I leave at that - just rumors, especially the personal stuff.

Rumors and hearsays are part of our world today. It's not only for boards like this, but in any type of organization or sporting activity there is a board like this.

The people of corbin would love to hear the real reason this happened. We want to, because in the majority of the peoples eyes, it was a thriving and growing business, increasing all the time.

I do know Poynter as far as who he is and so on, but not nearly well enough to call and ask him what the deal is. Even if I did, he wouldn't know me well  enought to tell me. Is it any of my business?  NO! But I'd sure like to know. For one reason, if Doug opened up again, it may have something to do with whether I patronize his restaurant again.

And, rumors and hearsays like this will flourish at the gathering places all over town even without this site. At the Dixie, at church, Rotary, Lions Club, ball games, everywhere corbinites congregate.

We'd just like to know.

let me just say that the vh was a joke anyways - you call that fine dining - PLEASE!  get a life and patronize a real restaurant, oops, I forgot, Corbin doesn't have any!

Popular opinion is that VH will end up in London because of Sunday sales and more interest from the city and locals.

London and Laurel County have good teamwork in getting new businesses regardless of whether they are restaurants and other retail companies, manufacturers, distributors, technology companies, service companies, or other types of offices.

The city of Corbin has great potential . When the Falls Ford and General Motors dealerships move to Knox County outside the Corbin City limits, Corbin will lose two of its major retail establishments from its occupational tax role.

Some people in Corbin have minimized the importance of getting the Harley-Davidson Dealership in Corbin. The retail base in the Corbin area is mostly off Exit 29 in South Laurel County, and in Corbin, Knox County. Corbin does not get one penny in occupational taxes from any of those businesses.  London-Laurel County, and Barbourville-Knox County get nearly all of the national named retail business occupational tax. A. J. Carr and Steve Brock have a vision for an outstanding development on the 40 acre site on which the Harley-Davidson company would be the first of several blue chip companies.  These kind of entrepreneurs are the strength of our future business growth.

Corbin needs to work with entrepreneurs such as Carr and Brock to develop  plans forr business growth at exit 25 and Cumberland Falls Highway. They also need a plan to get some other business in the soon to be empty Dealership facilities.  And the Highway Transportation Cabinet has let Corbin down on providing road infrastructure for Cumberland Falls Hwy. at Exit 25.  When our new convention center is completed we will have a traffic nightmare. It is bad now. It will be worse soon. It is much better to prepare and be ready to meet challenges than to panic after the problems have hit you in the face.

The problem Bob is that you have a small number of people in key positions who have no clue whatsoever as to how to improve our community, whether its new industry, new retail, bringing in more tourists and additional tourism dollars, helping local companies grow their business, etc. The only thing they are good at putting on a bad show, badmouthing programs, and talking about people behind their backs, especially when its not their plan, idea, or concept.

When someone does have a plan, an idea, or a concept, they are looked upon as a threat to the local inner circle who live for recognition only - not the betterment of Corbin. If they were good at what their jobs and brought a lot of growth to the community, then great, give them recognition, if thats what they want. But even when they do a poor job - look at Corbin today vs. years ago, and vs other small communiuties who are kicking our butts, knowone seems to hold them accountable. It seems the smarter you are, the harder you work and the more you really care, the more you get trashed by this group. This kind of thing happens everywhere, but most places but a stop to it, by the community, the Mayor, the people who really care - they step up and put and end to it. Its time for an overhaul.

People say they care, but then they sit in the shadows when their voices need to be heard. Another poster spoke of apathy - how do you get people around here to care? We better start caring or our town of Corbin will continue down this road to nowhere.

I know first hand you have the respect of communities such as Oklahoma City, Dallas, Frankfort, Stanford, KY, and many others. Thanks for caring and offering your knowledge to Corbin Bob, but unfortunately for many of us, you and others that truely bring something to the table have an uphill battle in this town.

Excellent reply. If the powers that be wanted to improve our community, it would be done.

I would like to see more support from both the city and the county in promoting ANY type of business.  This community can only grow when its leaders decide to take affirmative action.  Everyone is talking about the Harley deal, and how London is stealing them away.  Guess what... thats the name of the game!  Corbin and Whitley county can offer the exact same thing as London, however, it takes initiative and determination.  If goverment leaders looked at the big picture, they would understand that what London has offered is the same as stone sharpening stone.  A training incentive to a retail company hiring 30 to 50 employees, not only attracts that business, but entices other businesses to look at that area as well.  The total cost to the county for this incentive will be aprox 90k.... in less than 1 year the return on occupational tax, property tax, vehicle tax, etc will far outweigh the initial investment.  Would you not invest 90K if you got all that money back in a year?  What about a occupational tax credit for 5 years... if the business is not here, your not collecting it anyway!  Its time for our leaders to perfom like leaders and think like leaders.  Goverment is not functioning correctly if it is not of the people and for the people.  The Harley dealership, or any other national chain retail business, offers this community a chance for positive growth.  Developers can sell property, but it takes our local goverment to get involved and provide attractive incentives before we can move forward.  Industiral jobs are great, but not everyone wants to work in a factory.  How bout tourism...  Cumberland Falls offers the best ride anywhere for a motorcycle.  Imagine people coming to Exit 25 to not only buy, but also stay!  Wouldnt that be a change.  Now you have people doing more than stopping for gas... there will then be a need for more hotels, restaurants, and other retail chains wanting a piece of that tourism dollar.  Wait.. doesnt Corbin have a restaurant tax... so now our tax base increases even more... with just a 90K investment... I have to wonder about our leaders personal investments.... are they really investing wisely ?  Skate parks and Expo centers are great, but we need to focus on building a larger tax base to help pay for these "pork" projects.  Its time to quit taking care of select few, and provide this community a better bang for its buck.  We dont need cheerleaders, we need real leaders!

I agree. Great Post!! Now, what do we do about it?? How do we get our leaders to listen??? You need to send that post to the two local papers. We need to send alot of these posts to the two local papers. Keeping the posts only on this website allows the leaders to not have to respond to the people's opinions. These are great ideas, but our leaders need to be responding to us, and telling us what they are going to do, especially right now about the Harley Dealership.
