Diversity in Corbin,KY

Hello. My name is Joe and I am being promoted to a position that is based in Corbin. My Wife and I are in our 20's with a young daughter. We are both from mixed heritage and are curious about the racial diversity and unity of Corbin. Is this city the family oriented type of environment that we can feel comfortable raising our daughter in. Please respond honestly. Thank you and GOD bless.

I grew up in Corbin years ago and then lived in a number of states during my service in the Military and in business.

Corbin has become more diverse and open. We have excellent churches whose doors welcome all people. Our publichigh school systems have made excellent progress and rank high in the state. We also have a Catholic school that is open to K1-K8, and it is a very fine school.

We have Eastern Kentucky University's branch campus in Corbin, and the University of the Cumberlands sixteen miles away n Williamsburg, and Union College just 18 miles east in Barbourville.

We have a high quality Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin and it also manages an excellent Fitness Center. Kentucky's Legislature has approved a new Regional Covention Center that will start construction later this year.

Our Civic Clubs respond to all kinds of needs for our people and Corbin has a very bright future. We hope you and your family will join our community and help us make it ever better. I hope you have found this website to be helpful The Corbin Chamber of Commerce can be reached at 606-528-6390. Best wishes.

Nice Summary! Very Correct!

Corbin is also very well placed next to I-75, you can be anywhere from Nashville to Cincy in 2.5 Hours. Area is and always has been a great place to live and grow up.

Fortunately we have only a few people around that reflect the redneck comments of the previous writer. Corbin has some wonderful people who are generous, hard working, and compassionate citizens of the area. Visit our churches, schools, businesses, and civic clubs and you will see people who are committed to making life better for others.

Freedom of speech sometimes brings out the worst in our society, but that is one of the prices we pay for freedom and liberty. Corbin is a wonderful place to raise a family, gain an education, select the church of your choice, establish a business, and enjoy the beauty of God's wonderful creation.

Diversity is good for us. Many of the jobs we have in this area are with companies whose headquarters are in places like Japan, England, New York, Texas, Michigan,Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other areas. We also have many people who are retiring and moving to this area. Come to Corbin for a visit and use your own judgement to determine the character and values of people in our area.

As the Message Board Administrator and moderator I have to ask this person/persons what their real objective is with the above message they posted. All message boards and other internet related services track and record IP addresses to help stop abuse of the system. You and your local Charter IP address (IP:24.159.9.208) also posted a message about NIBROC on May 19, 2006 (Forum: Corbin Events / Topic: NIBROC, message "Corbin wouldn't be the same without Nibroc..."), the same day you posted the above derogatory message about Corbin, as well as a derogatory message about Mayor Miller (Forum: How to Improve Corbin / Topic: Entertainment/Music Venue, message "This town could use anything classy LOL It is so behind times..."). All three messages were posted by the same computer within 10 minutes of each other.

It sounds like you grew up in Corbin and love NIBROC and certain aspects of NIBROC, but you hate Corbin, it's mayor and city government? Are you trying to chase off people from visiting or moving to our area? Or, are you just trying to harrass this website?

Thanks to the 99.9% of you that post fun, relevent and thought provoking messages, and use this message board the way it was intended. To the .01% that try to be clever and play grade school games, I'm sorry you have so much free time on your hands.

I enjoy these message boards, and have learned quite a bit about several topics such as the restaurant tax and Civic Center issues from reading these postings. I think most of us who use them for the intended purpose recognize the BS messages - and kind of have an idea who the individuals are with too much time on their hands.

to the administrator,

I have lived in Corbin since 1973 attens Corbin schools and worked in the business area. Though you might not agree with the negitive comment that is what the web site is for.  Seems to me like ALOT of other things here that some people are trying to control things to go their way.  So what if everyone doesn't think this is the best town..  In some aspecks they are right.  Lets get real  Corbin in Not the Best place even today to raise a family in if you are Black or mixed. I know from experience, my brother is married to a very dark Pacific Islander and their grandchild is black.  Most people in Corbin do Not accept this way of life no matter how ignorant they are.  I like Corbin however I have advised my children to seek their carrers elswhere due to the fact that Corbin's average income is very low for the average family.

i am not one of these families, Thank God, however I see some of my good friends struggle at jobs at companies paying way below what they would make in Lexington ect.  (example, Pearson, Aison, ect. Companies come here and Dont want to or are asked to pay employees lower amount to keep other companies from having to raise their salaries.  At the same time rent (due to HUD homes being able to charge over amount for rent ) other normal rent has excelled

in our area.  Average rent in Corbin 3 bedroom aprtment $ 500.00. You can get that in Richmond making more per hour. I know I pay for my daughters rent each month while she is in college.

I love Corbin, but I never blind myself to what it's like.  If I had a husband of another race, I would not live there.  It's not that the city is full of racists (though there are many).  I just think it would be hard on any minority to live in an all-White town.  My Indian friends who live there are desperate to find other Indian families to relate with.... especially for their kids' sakes.

Very Interesting comments.

Corbin is very similar to many small towns in the Ohio Valley and Tenn Valley areas, small economies (Which we hope will grow) and very small populations. The majority of Mountain Folk in this area made a living from the mines over 150 years ago. Unfortunatley in the race to survive a tough mountainous area and the general ability to feed our families we did not have time to make sure racial quaotas (Sorry for the mis-spelling) were properly in place. I am talking here about the mid to late 1880's when the area was being formed.

The folks back then could not worry about those issues, times have certainly changed now and the country is approaching 300 Million plus (Probably much higher as many who are here are undocumented).

Our area is still dependent on Coal as one of the Primary sources of employment but now we have several more Industries who have created a little more opportunity, but this still is not on the order of Atlanta,LA, New York or even Knoxville or Lexington. It's much easier to meet Politically Correct Quote's in those cities. Diversity is a great thing but the Economic Infrastructure must be in place to support it.

I-75 came through Corbin only around 1972! Think about that. Many people would easily come here and live if the opportuniies were here, just not at that point yet, just like many other small communities.

Corbin has been and always will be a family oriented nice place to live for  most folks, the other 10% will always complain.

First of all, I don't think you should post someone's IP address. What was the purpose in that? Secondly, the person posting the original comment asked about life in Corbin, specifically the racial diversity and unity in Corbin. The person who made the redneck comment could have stated it a little more eloquently, but he had a valid point. Corbin is not very "minority friendly". Read the newspaper.

You commented "It sounds like you grew up in Corbin and love NIBROC and certain aspects of NIBROC, but you hate Corbin, it's mayor and city government?

First of all, a person can love certain aspects of their community while hating others. For example, I love that Corbin is a small town. I love that Corbin has the most beautiful scenery. I love that my neighbors and co-workers would do anything and everything they could to help someone in need. I loved the fact that we were a dry community (sorry that changed). But I also hate that my kids will have to go to larger towns to pursue some careers that Corbin can't support--not a lot of diversity in jobs here. I also hate that I have to pay to work. Thanks to our local government, I have to pay an occupational tax to work while other people sit at home and get free lunches that I have to pay for, free medical care that I have to pay for, and a slew of other freebies that I have to pay for because I get off my tail and work. Sure, you'll find stuff like that everywhere. But my point is that you can't love everything about your community--not possible.

You also commented "Are you trying to chase off people from visiting or moving to our area? Or, are you just trying to harrass this website?" The writer gave his honest opinion in response to a question asked. As far as harrassing this website--hello!!! It's a forum--a place where you state your opinion. If it isn't similar to that of the administrator or says something negative about our community does that means it's harassment? I don't think so.

I hope you don't always deal with individuals who express an opinion that is different than your own with such hostility.

We have some wonderful churches in Corbin. It would be nice to hear more sermons, however, about how our God made all of us. Red and Yellow, Black, Brown and White, they are precious in His sight, Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World.

I have never understood how any Christian person can live his or her life hating someone because of their color. We have made great strides in reducing racism.
But we must keep trying harder to be sure all persons, especially minority including all women, are given equal opportunity and equal pay. We should never be satisfied when some people treat others with hate and abuse.

Has anyone been to Grace on the Hill (former First United Methodist)? They opened their doors WIDE to bring Katrina evacuees to Corbin, most of whom were black. They lived for several months inside the church. Some still live in the area. It's one thing to preach, and we definitely need that, but what a witness it is to put your beliefs into practice.

The Methodist Church was wonderful in its response to bringing Katrina victims to live in their church. Some other local churches sent members to Louisiana, and Mississippi to help in rebuilding some churches and homes.

Thiis is the message Christ taught us to "Love thy neighbor as thyself."

I am pleased the attitude of people in our area has gotten much better about diversity. We have many people who have come to our area from different parts of the country and they seem to be well received, and enjoy living in the area. What are your findings?

I believe you might have some problems or struggles in this area being the minority. But I welcome your family deeply! I love all kinds of diversity. I think it makes a community much more interesting! Welcome to Corbin and good luck with the transition.
