Football Stadium

All

I was recently looking at our Concrete Bleachers at Cambell Field, from the Outside they still look very good but on the Inside where the Dressing Rooms are at there are Multiple problems.

Without getting in to Details we may have to address these issues quickly or we may find ourselves with some major Problems in the future. Hopefully we can get an Assesement of what it would take to fix and Up-Grade this facility and What we may face if we do not address these repair issues.

The Recreation Director should report to the City Commission & School on Current State Status of what we now have and a possible Costing of What it would take to repair this Structure, would also like to see a Time Line and when this could begin & End.

I think the Players and Coaches deserve a little Better and we can certainly do much better. This may turn in to a Major Saftey Problem not only for our own Kids & Coaches but for Visiting Teams. I think we can privately raise the Money and make this happen.

Any Thoughts!!!

It is very poor inside the rooms. The cement seats are also very hard and uncomfortable. The locker room for the officials is one of the worst facilities in the state and there have been complaints about it. It does need to be fixed.

Then why has the current RECREATION DIRECTOR not noticed or addressed this issue with local leaders? This problem is so Obvious!

Good Point-----------Not sure if our current Recreation Director has the Business Skills to clearly and concisely outline the current Problem and layout a time line and plan to correct these issues. A nice guy but I am afraid this is certainly past his Skill set.

No question we will have to get Professional Advice from Structural Engineering pro's on how to correct these issues.

Although there is Nothing stopping our current Rec Director from asking for help, is there?

YOU GUYS NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT TO BEGIN WITH.SHOULD YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH YOU WOULD FIND THE STADIUM IS NOT UNDER THE REC DIRECTOR OR THE CITY. THE STADIUM BELONGS TO THE SCHOOL SYSTEM,NOT THE REC DEPT.YOU NEED TO ADRESS YOUR CONCERNS TO THE SCHOOL BOARD,FOR THE RECORD I AGREE WITH YOU.

Maybe you have been living in one of those caves along Lynn camp creek.

1st of all----- Anytime the Recreation Dept makes use of a Facility and routes Hundres of young People through it they have the responsibility to make sure the facilities are safe. The Rec Dept uses campbell field as much as the Varsity football program as dozens of soccer teams also use this facility, along with the Youth Football programs.

For the last 50 Years the Rec dept has cleaned an maintained this field along with the city pool and the rotary park system's, all of this is highly intertwined within the city and the rec dept, always has been.

Yes, the school system may technically and I stress technically own this, an this is a MATTER OF DEBATE even now. The Recreation Dept is the one of the largest customers of Campbell Field, so the points are all still very valid regardless of who owns this field and is Still the responsibility of the Rec Director to clearly outline the situation and clearly market a way to better the current state of affairs, as the Rec Dept is still the largest Customer at Campbell Field where hundreds of kids, coaches, visitors of all ages are subject to SAFTEY issues.

Stop passing the buck on who or who does not own the process, step up here and help generate a plan to move forward and get this facility upgraded!

I DO NOT MEAN TO PASS THE PROBLEM.ONLY TO MAKE A POINT.HOWEVER THE REC DEPT DOES NOT TAKE CARE OF THE FOOTBALL STADIUM.THIS FACILITY IS STAFFED BY SCHOOL BOARD EMPLOYEES NOT THE REC. THE REC DEPT DOES USE THIS FACILITY AND CLENS UP AFTER EACH USE.I AGREE THE STADIUM IS IN GREAT NEED OF REPAIR.DO ME A FAVOR CALL THE CITY COLLECTOR AND ASK WHAT PERCENTAGE OF YOUR CITY TAX DOLLAR GOES TO THE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND COMPARE WHAT GOES TO THE REC DEPT. NOW WHO SHOULD BE ADRESSING THE ISSUE.

But you are passing the problem---------The Board Of Education along with the City and any other Entity that may or may not have Responsibilty to oversee the football stadium needs to see a Current State Analysis of the Needed Upgrades, the Recreation Director could easily contact Structural Engineering Firms in either Knoxville or Lexington and have one of the Inspectors Report on this Situation, the Cost according to their Customer Service Folks is between $400-$800. But you have to want to make an effort!!!!

At this Point the Powers that be can make the right call as to how to Proceed and when to pull the trigger on a possible upgrade Project. I also don't need to call the City Collector, Do me a favor and call one of these Engineering Support Service teams and have a Proffesional Inspection and Game Plan to Fix this underway!

Your thinking is more Reactive and Finger Pointing than Solution Based and Pro-Active Based.

"THE REC DEPT DOES USE THIS FACILITY"

Of Course the Rec Dept. uses this Facility----------They are the number one Customer in the City, you Route Hundreds if not thousands of Corbin Residents through this Stadium every Year-----------Take the High Road here Rec Director, be Pro-Active and Lay a Future State Plan out that Clearly shows what it will take to Fix the Problem and a Time Line to support it. Don't think City Collector can help you with this.

Thanks for bringing this stadium issue onto this forum. Corbin has a great education system and that is the number one priority. But we must keep our athletic facilities in good shape because these are part of the Quality of Life issue we must address to be sure our area can attract new industry, and to help our current business operators to continue to grow.

I have seen first hand how Georgetown has grown from a sleepy small college town into a major force in Kentucky. If the people around Corbin only took hold of their own destiny they could become as strong and potent as a Georgetown or Danville. We have EKU in the community. We have survived in spite of the poor managed governments in Knox and Whitley County. We have an outstanding school system. We have some very good business people. Our civic clubs are on top of helping in many worthy causes. We have some of the finest churches in Kentucky. It's good to see us discussing these issues, and the true test is to see us do something about them. Happy New Year!

What are we paying the Rec Director for? I thought this was his Responsibility?
I'll certainly handle all of this including the Assesment if the City will let me Collect the Rec Dept Director Salary?

Do you agree?

Let's let other Posters look over this and give their opinion also. Let the Written Verbage below speak for itself.

Am waiting to see the Report From the Recreation Director as to the Status of the Football Stadium and what it would take to repair it, maybe he has already reported this to the Board of Education and the City Commission.

My guess is he will tell everyone here on this web-site at 100 different reasons why he should not have to do anything "It's not my Job"

Hopefully he will post this report here on this web-site so everyone can see what it will take to Make our Stadium Better & Safer.

Let's see if he Leads with a Plan or Does nothing???

I'll bring this up here, and maybe start the same post on another thread, but, I'm going to throw out a bone here,,,,,,,,,,,,,

TEAR DOWN THE OLD YOUTH CENTER.

It's an eyesore, and the space could be used for parking.
It's been debated. I remember the dances there when I was in school. It was terrible then, and from what I hear, it's not much better. That said, I haven't been in there in some time.

But it is the Job of the Recreation Director to Ensure the Saftey of Hundreds of City & County Children that USE the Facilities provided by the Rec League, if their is an accident who do think will pay for it pal?

Think here for just a Nanosecond----------------The CITY!!!!!

I was waiting to hear an answer------Unfortunatley as I predicted he said----"It's not my Job"

Maybe the New Mayor and City Commission will take a long look at the Leadership in this position and see how much we are getting for our Tax Money.

Fill me in here first, who supervised the Rec Department, the city or School board.

Didn't they just change something with regard to supervising and overseeing the rec dept.

Is it under tourism now? I'm not sure.

Either way, after we find out, then, we need to go straight to that board, and present them with the issues, be it Board of Ed., Tourism, Chamber, or City.

The fiasco over the city pool is a great example. Normally, a person in charge would have been FIRED over those issues that had to do with the city pool. I'm not slamming anyone personally, so don't get defensive on that statement. No matter who it was, lack of preparation, oversight, and maintenance, and plain out waiting till the last moment, is not good management.

Now, if there's any unknown issues here, then I'll listen to them, and if necessary change my tune.

Back to the stadium,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,we need to get with the new member, Kim Croley, she'll be headstrong right now, and see what she can do as far as the board goes.

That stadium is one of the best in the area, and we need to keep it in top shape.

Gonna have to say "Nibroc Fan" has some very good points, absolutley agree with his or her points this time.

Just a few extra points as far as managing issues like the City Pool & The Football Stadium.

Under Normal Circumstances the Recreation Dept Head would do an assesement of any of these issues and present them to the proper authorities to have these issues addressed, it is true the Rec Manager does not own any of these facilities himself but most Managers in the Business World are graded on their ability to communicate issues clearly and concisely upward and to their Superiors and or the City and Board of Education in this case.

Mrs. Croley will be a great addition to the Board and will no doubt listen to any issue, but we can almost promise she will ask for a Current State Evaluation of what the issue is or is not. This is where the Breakdown is happening, our Manager in charge (If there is one) has not communicated any of these points, now I hope I am wrong but from what I can gather the Board has not been made aware of the Technical Improvement Issues pertaining to the Football Stadium!

Nibroc Fan is CORRECT--------------Most Folks would have been Fired over the City Pool Fiasco.

And again, I want to say catagorically, I AM NOT pointing fingers, NOT advocating firing or disciplining anyone.

It's just that we, all of us, need to know WHO is responsible, WHAT we can do when we feel there is a problem, WHEN we bring it up, at what meeting, WHERE we go to start the process, and WHY aren things being done and reported as to why or why not they are being looked into.

Thank you for the vote of confidence, but, you already have a rec director, and he is a good one. He works very hard, and has an almost impossible job to carry out.

He needs our support, and we should all get behind him.

If anything, he needs a full time, well paid assistant.

Think for a minute. Look how spread out his area of responsibility is. Rotary park, the swimming pool and rec center, West Corbin Park.

Mr. Sams is a dedicated individual, and cares about his job and the responsibility it carries.

It's easier for me and you to sit back and think of all these things. Yes, I care, so I continually try to come up with constructive suggestions. You can too. I would love for those in authority to consider some of these things, but, if not, there's not much I can do about it. I may run for office someday when I retire, but that's a long time away for me. But, let's keep up the good work, and keep the suggestions coming.

Wow

My My Mr. Nibroc Fan you seem to be changing your tune, as I read back on the Postings you have made, it certainly does not look like you thought much of the Job our current Rec Director has done or was doing, just read backwards?

Wow--You went from thinking great Ideas to giving Mr. Sams an side kick, we should sell Tickets to this Circus!!

That Fence your sitting on must be getting sorta slippery????

You should run for office and quickly as you would fit right in!

I don't think I changed my tune. If you're talking about my city pool comment, that is a separate issue. Why don't you start a thread yourself, and we'll discuss it.

How about this. He, the rec director, could contact the local colleges and check with them about an intern program. That way, students majoring in "sports management" types of classes and professions, even education degrees apply here, can come and work, for free, but receive school credit. Many professions have them. They would be given responsibilities and duties in the management areas, and also help drag the fields and mow grass.

Back to the football stadium, I think it was agreed, the rec dept doesn't have anything to do with it, the BOE does. It needs work, and we all agree. Let's see if the BOE listens.

One last thing. Give yourself a user name so we can know who we're talking to.

Mr. Nibroc

Who do you think Runs the City Pool, Who do you think has an office right next to the Pool? Who do you think is responsible for the Maint and management of the City Pool?

Read the very first comment regarding the Football Stadium in this Column, just take a little time and look before rattling off.

You will see it was made Clear this should be passed upward to the Board of Education, it is also clear that the Primary User of the Stadium and it's grounds is the Recreation Dept, as the Primary User the Least the management could do is explain to the board some of the issues, is that toooo much too ask.

Giving the Current Director a Side Kick to contimue Bumbling & Stumbling is not the Answer, maybe less time at the Chamber Of Commerce and more time attending to Rec Issues and saftey Issues like the Terrible State some of the Facilities are in would take some Precedents.

Maybe we can get some of these Superstars who you say is doing a great job Cloned in the Future so the Great Work they are doing can continue long into the Future, we certainly need more folks who can bumble & stumble.

You had some great Ideas but Self Destructed Quickly!

I read the first post. And,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I know who runs the city pool. All here on this board knows who runs it.

If you're saying, the rec dept, and specifically the rec director, should make recommendations to the BOE as far as needed repairs and modifications to the football stadium, in a neutral sort of way, I have no problem with that, and I would say neither does he.

Is it his job to do so, to tell them what needs done, I don't think so. Has he done so, I would guess that he has in one way or another. I would say that everyone that has set foot in that stadium in the last few years, has told someone in authority of the things needing done.

I know the last game I attended, I spoke with members of the BOE, the varsity club, and many others about things that needed done. Not officially, just as a parent, grandparent, taxpayer, and former user of the facility.

The key issue for it all, is money.

Thanks for the compliment for the great ideas. At least I have tried to come up with some. Have you?

What do YOU suggest be done, specifically?
