RE: The Varsity Club

GET A LIFE!!!

I guess this Means your not going to give us any Criteria for Improvements that everyone here is asking for???

The criteria  is "HEART"!!!!  Look at the 79 team ttahts being inducted, they shoul have won it all but just had an unlucky break.  They are fully deserving to be in the HOF.

The 79 Team was a Great Team, we are talking about Indivuduals and the Criteria it should take to get in. Unfortunatlety when people are nominated, involved and being disscussed it must be based on something.

The heart speech is really moving but having a good pecking order and criteria is critical as time rolls along, for some reason you don't seem to get this jist of this point.

Your kind of thinking explains nothing to people and is the exact problem we have now in the entire Football program. The Varsity Club has been great for the community but no sane person is going to tell you that creating Criteria & Improveing the System currently used is a bad thing.

Drop the pride & heart speeches and deliver the criteria everyone here has requested a at least a dozen times now. It's obvious you do not have the smarts to deliver any criteria and that's why you continue to try and launch the Pride & Heart baloney.

Just admit you do not have the smarts and ask someone like Bob Terrell to step in and help create or just get it done, put your limited ability aside and let the A-Team handle this criteria issue, it's apparent your way past your ability Level.

I deserve no credit for being involved in starting the Redhound Varsity Club and the Hall of Fame. I was living in Michigan at that time and we should all thank those who did have this dream and took action to make it happen. Somewhere in my books I have a newspaper story on how it was started and those who were involved. I will try to find that for you.

The time I was on the Hall of Fame Committee the Chairman always did a lot of work organizing the applications of people who had been nominated. We also had in our book the names of those nominated in earlier years. There were always a few coaches or ex-coaches on the committee and we went through the credentials of the nominees to determine which ones had a better record than others. Some of the things considered were individual statistics, team record, those who played two or three sports exceptionally well, and  All-State honors were always an item we considered. We also considered nominees selection to high school all-star teams, tournament and playoff records, and leadership and character. Players who won the Harry Taylor and Ted Meadors award were also factors.

When nominations are submitted some are put together with much more detail and newspaper clippings about the nominees career at Corbin. As I remember it was based on Athletic performance at Corbin High School and not on college or other competition. There have been several outstanding college players at Corbin who never played high school sports while attending Corbin or did not have a Hall of Fame career at Corbin. The Hall of Fame is based on records for Corbin High School.

These are just some of my thoughts and remembrances. Whether we all agree or disagree with things the Varsity Club does on occasion, the results have been good for our young people. That is the purpose. I know some feelings have been hurt when people believe they deserve the honor but don't get selected. But the thing that really counts is having the Redhound spirit and wanting to make the program strong for our youngsters.

Closing, it is great to see as many kids participate in athletics regardless of the sport they choose. Let's root for all of them. They are our kids and grandkids, or nephews or nieces. Go Redhounds!

Bob Terrell

PS: I remember the several times I was on the committee we had as many as four meetings going through the process. Everyone on the committee gave a very good effort but one problem is committee members never know personally about every nominee. There is an effort to have a mix of age ranges on the committee to have the best coverage possible.

Very Nice Summary Bob, well written and makes sense. Unfortunatley Bob can not rescue the current crew running the show. Once again this is the responsibility of the Board, President etc to come up with Criteria here to make the selection process more clear and easy.

It's not bashing anyone to to try an improve a system, the questions will continue long in to the future by many many folks on "Why" or "How" certain folks got in. Having good clear criteria that explains how the system works and milestones met will certainly stop or slow down the questions.

Go to the NFL Hall Of Fame Web-Site or any other entitity who Nominates people for Honors, there is always a Criteria published and made clear to defuse the folks who may be somewhat perplexed or upset over something.

All major Companies and even small ones are clearly instructed to create & post work standards and rules that pertain to what they can or can not do, this always makes it easier to resolve issues when the rules are clearly defined. Our Legal System is based on Criteria, it's called the constitution and bill of rights, not people simply trying to decide whats right or wrong, Criteria & Written rules must exist as John Adams said, or Chaos may reign.

Enough with the History lesson, I would strongly advise this group to listen, Improve and make public future Criteria and Operating Procedures. Good luck as the Varsity Club does great things, but asking a group or entity to improve or get Better is certainly OK!

The Varsity Club has done some really great things for our students and sports programs. But they need to communicate more effectively. Many people didn't know there was a Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament.

This is not supposed to be a small clique. This is supposed to be a broad based support group, and many of our most loyal members are not even living in this area.

And don't make a mountain out of a mole hill. Good communications about why actions are taken can head off later misunderstandings.

Coaches have a tough job today in dealing with all the pressures that confront them. I believe Tony Pietrowski has been a valuable leader these past years and he is still a young coach who has built a great program. The Florida school that beat us in the semi final of this year's tournament by four points has 3600 students. We came close to making a great comeback in that tournament. The New York team that beat us by one point in the consolation is also a large school. Corbin did not win the tournament but these were two games that will make us tougher in our region.

I salute the hardwork of the members of the Varsity Club. I salute the dedication and hardwork of our coaches and team members. I believe the Varsity Club will work on making next year's attendance much better by having several more teams from our area included.

I thought the officiating was good in the tournament. If I had been one of the coaches of several teams who lost close games I probably would not have thought it was so good. Let's remember that we all look at things from a different perspective.

Just moved to the area, trying to get into the Varsity Club, can I apply for membership?

Am a football fan and good community activist, really feel I can contribute.

You need to talk to Kent Dorfman, he's new to the area too, and he played football in the 70's, which is a requirement to be in the varsity club and serve as an officer.

Good luck.
