Some people on this board are being too hard on the tourism board. I agree with the poster who said they aren't there to accomodate a few disgruntled losers. The board members are volunteers who were not elected to anything and are not paid. They just do it because they were asked to by elected officials who trust them. They've done a great job at not wasting the public's money on expensive web deals and plastic toy trains. I salute them for showing the guts to make the right decisions.

Just because one or two people didnt' get what they wanted out of tourism does not mean its a bad board.

This sounds like one of the three amigos on the tourism board, doesn't it?

Like I just stated on another topic, unfortunately we don't have enough "Big Picture" thinkers on this board when it comes to tourism. The first criteria when someone is added to a board should be do they know anything about the industry of the board they are going to serve on? I look at the tourism board members and it is a given that some of them have zero experience regarding tourism, and know absolutely nothing about the tourism industry - just go down the list.

Some of these folks are put on not because they have any knowledge of tourism or desire to grow our tourism, but as political favors or to help stack the vote deck. It's time to clean up and right the ship. As far as expensive web deals, this person obviously have no clue what you are talking about - another indication they must be a member of the Tourism boys club.

Very well said last poster!!!!!

Putting people on these boards who have no experience in the field of tourism & business is silly. These are political favors and would have worked in 40's , 50's, 60's but now we are fighting for our lives as a city as London is whipping us like a baby seal.

It's never too late to change and improve but right now our government seems to be stunned and not willing to take chances and be the aggressor.

I say put Red, Smokey & Junior on the next board as they may do a better job and will at least be somewhat interesting.

Red for Chairman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After being away for awhile, thought I'd catch up with what is of interest on the message boards. Same ole' thing---Estep and Carpenter!

Have you thought about what will happen to the message boards when Estep and Carpenter have ended their terms?? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

You must admit, they have kept the adrenalin flowing. Who, or what, will there be to talk about when they are gone? Can anyone else be quite so colorful? Red? Smokey? Junior?

Just a little food for thought!

poneal, you must have missed a few new threads.

While C&E are a main concern, another new concern, which directly involves C, is the possibility of losing one of our largest in city employers, Vangent (formerly Pearson). As the news will come out in bits and pieces, the possibility is there that Carpenter totally dropped the ball on finding another building for Vangent to occupy, specifically in our industrial park, where a new spec building was approved months ago and nothing has happened with it since. Unfortunately, we won't find out the truth, I'm afraid, until Vangent moves to London into a larger building. That's one thing you've misssed.

They Harley Davidson deal has gone totally sour, you must have missed that one too. Looks like london won again. Although it's a free country and you're free to build where you wish, theres some issues abound questioning the agressiveness of our city leaders and economic development (carpenter) people, of whether they tried their best to make the Harley dealer feel wanted. Our leaders feel we should give incentives to anyone to make them want to come into corbin, and I guess that includes a few courteous phone calls and visits as well.

Those are two topics you missed. Keep reading, there's more.

Poneal you are absolutely right in your assessment of this board. It is nothing more than a small collection of pathetic losers who no one really likes much in real life, or they no longer have any influence over anything because people are tired of them and their negative attitude toward Corbin, so they come here to complain over and over again about McBurney, Estep, Carpenter and anyone else they can think of.

The Harley deal is a good example. Puny incentives made no difference in that case. But posters here continue to slam our city leaders for not offering them. They are not going to let the facts get in the way of a chance to blast Carpenter again. That seems to be all that goes on here.

There are many good things happening in Corbin. You don't have to look hard to see that. I think it's people that constantly run our town down on this board and seem to hate Corbin that are the problem. Makes you wonder why they don't move to someplace that suits them a little better.

Well, I don't consider myself a pathetic loser, and last time I checked, had quite a few friends, and I read and post on this board. And I love Corbin. I'm not all about negativity. Anyone who knows me, knows that. But, I'm sure someone will slam me for this post. That's how it seems to work!

But I am tired of reading in the newspaper about London getting this, and London getting that, and they have already had 60 ribbon cuttings this year with more scheduled. And they have strategic planning meetings bringing in experts to help them plan for more growth. If that makes me negative, then call me that if you want. And it's not that I don't want to see London grow. I think growth for London is good for us, as long as we are growing too. But, I get really scared when it seems we are losing more businesses than we are gaining. I have a hard time believing that we, as a community, can't put some pro-active growth plans together, so we can compete. We have to ask ourselves some very hard questions. Why are we in this position? We have to put aside this feud in town, and put our town first. It's like two divorced parents who forget about their kid, while trying to one-up the other.

It's time to pull together, and do what's right, instead of bickering continuously. We need people in positions of leadership who will do that right things for this town. I feel like now, some of our leaders won't take the step toward growth, because then they feel like if they do "then the other side wins". And who loses with that attitude, our town does.

By the way, if anyone knows the numbers, how many ribbon cuttings has Corbin had this year? And, how many businesses have shut down. For my own interest, I would like to know these numbers. Anyone know?

        I agree with wkugirl.

The Times has too many London stories.

I agree WKUGIRL.  The easiest way to accept defeat is to rationalize that what you were trying to accomplish wasn't really that important. You convince yourself that it isn't important for us to have a sense of urgency and a tough competitive spirit because things will just fall into place. In the real world it doesn't happen that way.

It is easy for those who are satisfied with the status quo to cast rocks at those of us who want to improve and compete. To those who accept poor performance we are just a few trouble makers who run down the city. Bull Frogs!

There is a large number of us who believe Corbin can do better. There are many of us who believe Corbin should battle for its share of the Knox County Occupational Taxes. There are many of us who believe our Economic Development people should keep a close relationship with our local businesses to try to help them when they go through problems that may cause them to move or close down.  There are a huge number of us who were deeply embarrassed when our Chamber invited several Republican candidates to give partisan political speeches at monthly meetings and were so blind as to snub the Democratic candidate for Governor who was predicted to win in a landside. It should have not been a surprise when he did win in a landslide.

I don't believe any candidate for Governor, Democrat or Republican, should be snubbed by any Chamber of Commerce during an election. The excuse that the Corbin Chamber is not a City of Corbin led or funded operation is true, but it carries the name Corbin Chamber of Commerce and when they snub a candidate for Governor it is a bad reflection on all of us who love Corbin.

To those of you who are so clueless as to think there are just a few of us who raise our concern about losing jobs, get out and take a little time to smell the roses.  There is a bit of a stink in the air.

I can't tell if the posts about these people are in jest or not. I do not know Red or Smokey but I do know Junior. He is a fine person and has great computer skills. He would make a fine addition to any board.

You sound like someone who can\'t argue the facts or back their statements. Seems I recall hearing part of your second sentence from my 14 year-old and her friends talking about a classmate.

Seems the attitude of the people you are referring to isn\'t negative about Corbin, in fact its very positive about Corbin. These people seem to feel we have the potential to be even better, get more industry here, keep our kids from moving away to find higher paying jobs, and have a city that offers not only locals more diversity but millions of potential tourists (and their money) as well.

It seems that you are the one with the attitiude problem, thinking that Corbin can only reach a certain level, and continually accepting defeat to the likes of London, Danville, Pikeville, Berea and other towns who know how to make things happen, the same towns who won\'t tollerating or accept being told these things can\'t happen.

Show me anyone on this board whose comments indicate they hate Corbin. Disagreeing on political issues means you hate Corbin? What country were you born in? As another person commented, if you disagree with your spouse, does that mean you hate them?

Regarding your humorous comment \"Makes you wonder why they don\'t move to someplace that suits them a little better\", you might want to pay attention to what many of our kids are doing once they are out of High School - \"moving places that suit them better\" that offer jobs and things to do.

The real problem isn\'t these people\'s attitudes, no, the real problem is people like you who only want these things if you or your buddies can somehow take credit for it. Because others have the vision and ability to make things happen and you do not, you would rather it not happen. That is an attitude problem.

My comments re Red, Smokey, and Junior were strictly in jest. Since these are obviously nicknames, I do not know them and mean no offense to any of them. I realize the issues at hand are serious and something does need to happen in Corbin to draw new businesses.
When shopping centers and malls came into being, out went the downtown shopping. It has happened everywhere you go. In my travels, what I have seen that brought shoppers back to the downtown areas were unique shops, the kind that draw the attention of tourists as well as local residents. One small town had the old-fashioned ice cream shop, including pastries. It also offered a quick lunch for working people. I was in another town where at 12 o'clock noon, the line went out the door and down the street because the deli food was so good. (Good food, even soup and sandwich, at a reasonable price goes over big. Eat in or carry out.) Antique shops are a definite attraction. Put several in walking distance of each other, and watch those collectors come.
There's the gift shop offering unusual items that can't be found at WalMart (no offense).
A lunch room with a library-style atmosphere where people can eat and read at the same time, and maybe a daily afternoon serving of hot tea/cocoa and tidbits between 2 and 4 o'clock. A place with a side room where you can order lunch and then play bridge. What's wrong with a minimum charge so that bridge groups have a regular place to gather? I recently played Dominoes for my first time and loved it. A good game to refresh your math! There could be other games offered as well. (I am just throwing out ideas for anyone interested)
Did you know there are people who travel from one city to another, visiting Quilt Shops? It isn't a lost art, yet! They also offer classes.
A European linen shop carrying items that residents drive to the city to find. There are many ideas that could be incorporated into downtown Corbin. It really needs an uplift. (I merely named a few of the things I like, especially the food.)

According to the success London has in attracting new businesses, maybe someone needs to go to London and research what they are doing right. If it works for them, why can't it work for Corbin? Talk, is nothing but that, Talk! Get together and put words into action. It's your town!
There was a time when the London folks came to Corbin to do their shopping.

I can tell you why London is doing better than Corbin in one word: Determination.

London is determined to grow and become better than the year before. Its not just the goverment, but the community itself that is determined. They have laid foundations and are building on them. Whether or not you agree, its true. Corbin's future lies not on the outside but on the inside. By that I mean we wont grow by waiting for industry to come our city leaders have to work together and go get the industry. Crying about getting cheated by another city or county is a cop out! I may be preaching, but honestly we have no excuse for not growing just as much as London. We have the same resources but do we have the same type people to sell those resources. This simply a vote issue. Dont just vote for a leader who has pretty signs, or because someone tells you they will do a good job, vote for a person who has a proven track record for performing. If you want to see growth, vote for someone who has shown the skills needed to move us forward. If you want to see us stay right where we are at, vote the incumbents. Its all about being determined. This board is great, but it wont vote for you, thats up to you. Dont get on here and raise hell about how bad things are, make your voice heard come election day. Be determined however you feel. Guess what, thats the true American way. Right to free speech, and the right to vote.

" But when a long train of abuses and usurpatations, pursuing invariably the same object envinces a design to reduce them under absoulute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Goverment, and to provide new Guards for their future security..."

Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776

London grows because it wants to. Corbin stifles because it wants to.

London has no qualms about who is on their committees, or where they live. They know that if people are interested enough to get involved, let them get involved.

That's why there's such a tight knit circle on our boards and committees. A small group wants to maintain control. And, they will. Until someone knocks them out of the saddle.

You see, you'll never see that type of arrogant attitude in London. They don't ask where you live, where you work, or even your political party. They actually thank you for getting involved.

In corbin, first, you have to be in the inner circle of the mayor, commissioners, or Terry Forcht. Then, once you've made that cut, they have to decide if you'll go along, and not be a 'stick in the muc", and just sit back and agree with them. If you pass that test, then they'll talk to you about it, see how you answer their questions, and if you pass that one, they'lll put your name on the list for consideration. Then, they'll pass the list around privately, and call each other and discuss it. Once the entire network has passed judgement, then, they'll make their decisions. Sometimes, it's only for one person. Other times, it's for several.

Don't think it works that way, you're wrong. How do I know, 'been there, done that.'

Step back and look at all the boards and committees, and you'll be able to connect the dots just like I described above.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read this post. Right now London is being rooked by Laurel County and we are getting tired of it. It is clear that the poster has no real knowledge of London but that is OK with me. This message board is the best advertising that London has going for it. Keep it up. No industry would ever go to Corbin if their executives get a glimpse of the crap on this message board. Please keep it up. We need the economic growth up here.

As a former Business man I have always believed you can never improve unless you recognize the things you must do better. An athlete can't improve if he or she believes they are the best they can be.

Laurel County/London have done well but the arrogance factor is catching up on them.  Many people in Laurel County are not happy about things. Their high school academics are not near as good as Corbin's schools. Their high schools are so large that many kids become lost in the shuffle. They have more drug problems with young people.

If I was considering establishing a business in a community I would want to go to one in which the leaders were not complacent and where there are open communications in the community to discuss the issues.

A healthy community environment is one in which there is curiosity, ambition to improve, good education, and an atmosphere in which the entrepreneural spirit is alive.

Corbin's problems are exacerbated by the complexity of operating on the edge of three counties.  Corbin must become more innovative and creative in the work they do on Economic Development. They need to go back to working like they did when they helped CTA survive their disastrous accident. That was a lesson in how to do things right. How soon some people forget.  Corbin can become a great economic community with a fine quality of life, but instead of finding ways to say no they need to find ways to say yes.

There is some risk to doing anything that is truly worthwhild and long lasting.

This last person is funny.

Company executives don't look at message boards to pick their cities - every city has several message boards, including a pretty trashy one in London - they look at what the area has to offer and talk to the city and county government people and the industrial development people. If they are sold properly, they will come. If they are not sold, they won't. Its that simple.

Look at your city's sales people. Would they ever be hired into sales and management positions by anyone else? Microsoft? Toyota corporate? IBM? General Motors? Any manufacturer? Would the people they are trying to sell on coming to Corbin ever consider hiring them? Its no different than selling anything else - million dollar software deals, real estate, construction, wholesale consumer products, etc.

You can either go with the rookies to sell your community who have basically never sold anything in their lives, not even to small businesses - or you can go with the A team by hiring people with business and sales experience, and who have experience working with companies both large and small. Again, its common sense business. And your not selling used cars or mens shoes, you're selling a community with millions of dollars and thousands of jobs potentially at stake.

Its the city's choice whether they go with the A team or the rookie team, and whether they succeed or fail.

Also, tell us how London is getting "rooked" by Laurel county. You make a strange comment but don't back it up with any facts or substance.

Great comments.

With the direction we're heading in now, Corbin will end up a bedroom community for people that work elsewhere, much like Berea, Richmond, Nicholasville, Lawrenceburg, Paris and others were for Lexington (that is beginning to change somewhat now, those smaller cities are now getting the jobs to keep people there with things like incentives and lower tax rates than lexington). Knoxville is the same way. People move out to live, but work in the city.

Our school system is tops, and will continue to be, as when people move here to live, but work elsewherer, the school tax base increases with homes and such. The cities development will flounder, but, residential areas will flourish.

Until we get people in our city leadership with some real business experience, we'll continue to remain level or decline. And we need an Economic Development group that knows what it means to recruit business and industry, not hire rock bands and put on political luncheons.

Do this, where were we 5 and 10 years ago, and where are we now. The only positive thing that has happened, economically, is we passed the alcohol vote, and have drawn in some good business's and it has helped our economy take a different turn. WE can't use the Expo Center as a good or bad thing yet, as we won't know until it is finished.

Maybe Corbin should be somewhat of a bedroom community for all of the old heads that fled Corbin after high school and have now returned to tell of how they played ball in their younger days.

Mr. Carpenter moved back to Corbin at least 20 months back, and just because he stopped playing football and moved away after high school doesn't mean he can't talk of his Corbin High School accomplishments, which were outstanding for the era he played in.

While the majority of our local kids leave for better job opportunities after high school as mine have, I hope that if they do return to Corbin one day we have a warmer welcome home for them than the above poster.

Typical. You seem to think government is the answer to everything. Such a welfare mentality.

For the most part, private individuals working in a free market economy are the ones that make things go. To lay all the blame or credit for things at the feet of our mayor or economic development director shows you are really simpleminded.

Spoken like a true George Bush, Ernie Fletcher republician.

The mayor and Bruce sure take credit when something good (in their opinion it's good) happens, so, they better darn well be ready to take the blame when something bad happens too.

Same goes for these committees. They can all say "no" very easily and have a wait and see attitude, like Tipton and Estep. That's easy to do. Make no decisions, take no chances, and things will stay just the way they are. Isn't that what they wanted.
